...well at. The difference is, I’m stronger in my writing skills than my reading skills. The reason for this is that when I’m writing I get so into my words and imagination to where my hand with the magical pencil does the talking. My skills in reading only depend on one thing, if it catches my attention or not. Stories have to get me involved with the story somehow in order for me to get interest. If it’s not catching my attention, I’m not reading it. But most importantly, critical thinking is what ties reading and writing together. I am very picky about the books and articles I read. Stories for me have to have a mystery or even sometimes a sappy love story. Of course I’m going to love romantic books because I’m a girl, right? Yet again, some love stories bore the living hell out of me because it’s a “typical” love story. Reading books just all depends on how the author grabs his reader’s attention and how he plays the story throughout the book. When I find a book that I’m interested in, I will read the entire novel. Or even something that is scary will keep hooked on the story. Scary stories are my favorites because the story just keeps my suspense in play. Celebrity gossip is definitely something that I get into reading. There is always something new with these celebrities. Since these celebrities are well known, their lives are somehow interesting to us. We love the celebrity gossip because they’re famous and any juicy story about a celebrity will catch our attention...

...The Danger of a Single Story - Transcript Courtesy of TED By Chimamanda Adichie Transcript: I'm a storyteller. And I would like to tell you a few personal stories about what I like to call "the danger of the single story." I grew up on a university campus in eastern Nigeria. My mother says that I started reading at the age of two, although I think four is probably close to the truth. So I was an early reader. And what I read were British and American children's books. I was also an early writer. And when I began to write, at about the age of seven, stories in pencil with crayon illustrations that my poor mother was obligated to read, I wrote exactly the kinds of stories I was reading. All my characters were white and blue-eyed. They played in the snow. They ate apples. (Laughter) And they talked a lot about the weather, how lovely it was that the sun had come out. (Laughter) Now, this despite the fact that I lived in Nigeria. I had never been outside Nigeria. We didn't have snow. We ate mangoes. And we never talked about the weather, because there was no need to. My characters also drank a lot of ginger beer because the characters in the British books I read drank ginger beer. Never mind that I had no idea what ginger beer was. (Laughter) And for many years afterwards, I would have a desperate desire to taste ginger beer. But that is another story. What this demonstrates, I think, is how impressionable and vulnerable we are in the face of a story, particularly as children. Because...

...and over again in my life and that is why I succeeded,” is the quote that I choose to open up my This I Believe essay and now I have branched that out into a digital story. My digital story has the songs “Cinema” and “Gotta Have It” and it is about the struggles that Lebron James had to endure in order to get his championship ring. The theme of my digital story and essay is, in retrospect, failure is success. The style of my essay and digital story is anecdotal. The combination of the theme and style in my essay and digital story is what helps incorporate the “So What?” First, already know that the theme of my essay and digital story is, in retrospect, failure is success but now I have to show you how it shown in my pieces. The theme is shown in my essay by the sentence, “The only way to learn how to ride a bike is to fail multiple times and to learn from your mistakes.” This quote from my essay depicts how the them is shown in it by giving and anecdotal explanation on how no matter how many times you might fail, the information that you gather will help you out in the end. The theme is shown in my digital story from the several pictures of Lebron James training after he lost the NBA finals in 2011 and which lead to winning the finals in 2012 because he learned from his mistakes/ failure and he succeeded. Next, you already know that the theme of my essay and digital story is anecdotal but now I have to show you it is shown in my pieces. A quote from my This I Believe essay...

...NAME HERE CLASS INSTRUCTOR NAME HERE DATE The Wonderful World of Literature Reading literature can be fun, educational, and exciting if you have the ability to lose yourself inside of the story. Literature is what you interpret it to be through short stories, poems, and written plays. There are many approaches you can use to help you understand literature. The reader’s response is one of the best ways to help you understand literature because it forms question based around your interest in the story. Based on author (Shapiro, 2010), his comment on literature was “just as people generate causal explanations for social events around them, story readers usually generate inferences about causality of events when reading a story.” I always try to create my own imaginary world to help me lose myself inside the story. “When you allow reading to unlock your imagination, your connection sets the stage for intellectual engagement.” (Clugston, 2012). I have read several forms of literature during a homework reading assignment and there was one story that stood out in my opinion. The story called “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” written by James Thurber. This story was great because it made me create images in my mind as I was reading the story. This story contained two key ingredients that I love to relate to when I am reading. A character with a imagination and can find humor in their daily activities with the real world. I was able to lose myself in...

... by Kerri McDonald The genre of my story is romance; however it changes slightly nearer to the end of my story into a horror. I’d liked to have read this book because I like reading about romance and horror separately, so the two ideas together would be interesting for me. I think that people in high school and college from the age of 13-20 would mostly like this story, particularly for female readers as they like romance more than male do. It shouldn’t matter whether you’re married, single or engaged, this story can entertain the reader and make them want to read on. I have written my story in first person narrative (in the past tense), as it’s easier to portray the senses, thoughts and feelings of the protagonist. My story is told from the perspective of an inside viewer, Katie. My inspiration to write my story was Debora Hill and John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’. Michael, the murderer, kills people and in the end he gets away while the main character that he was trying to kill, Laurie, was still living. I have chosen to name my killer Malcolm because it sounds similar to Michael. At the end of my story he gets away after killing Lewis Jones, which is very similar to Debora Hill’s story, as Michael just disappeared after the reader thinking that he’s dead from falling out of a window. Laurie lived and so did my character, Katie. Michael reappears again and again throughout the story, but he is ignored. This technique makes the reader realize that the character...

In the next 5-10 years, my goal is to become a skilled multimedia and multiplatform communications professional who is up to date with the latest communication technologies. I want to be adept in my ability to understand and differentiate audiences and the messaging that best suits them. I hope to accomplish this goal by working in settings where I can learn from peers, colleagues and mentors as well as have the freedom to create and explore new strategies that use both creativity and insight to relay stories and messages. 2. ...My best writing was when I used to like writing. I wrote a short 7 page paper in 8th grade for a project. I liked horror and gore so I wrote a horror story about a scarecrow at an abandoned house. Yes I know there was already some published but I was unique about my story. I was so well written my teacher gave my story to the board of education. Then the board gave it to a real publisher! My paper wasn't that good though but I at least get to say my paper was read by a real novelist. My worst story I wrote was in 10th grade. It is my worst because this is when I started doing my assignments the day before or the day it was due. My story was about the book we read in class which I fell asleep on. The assignment was for us students to write a story about yourself and compare it to the book, "To Kill A Mockingbird". I really didn't read this book at all either so I procrastinated. The worst part is that the assignment was for a midterm! This is when I got my first F. I would totally go back because it was a horrible story I wrote. I didn't even do the assignment correctly I just wrote a story about myself. I would want to erase that F because it was the only F I saw in my report card my who life! Not only I but my parents as well was upset with me. In critical writing I believe that I will write stories better, have great grammar , and know how to start and end a paper. I also can't wait last minute and do pre drafting before every paper so the assignment will be...

...The story of La Llorana, or the crying woman, is a very popular folk tale in the Spanish-American community. It has been passed down from generation to generation as a precautionary tale. Growing up in a predominately Mexican community, La Llorana is the most popular folk tale ever. It has been portrayed in paintings, movies, books, etc. This story has been used to scare children from going out late at night and to prevent them from doing anything they are not supposed to be doing. My first-hand experiences are few to none on this story, but I have been told stories by my parents and grandparents. As a child, I was told the story of La Llorana from a very early age. My mom first told me the story around my teenage years when I began to go out later at night. She always...

...ideas for my creative story idea came from my creative writing piece came from Two Words by Isabel Allende. In her story, two words play such a significant role in the story and has power on the characters. I incorporated the power and significance of the eyes, just like she had down with her words. The significance of the eyes, just like the words drives the character to find more of what they mean and drive them to insanity. Eyes, in Janet’s perspective is the key of connecting the past to the present. She gets drawn into it and it changes her just like words spoken to the colonel had changed his life through the powerful significance of the words. The central motif that I had chosen to be explored in my piece was the eyes of Eckleburg. In the Great Gatsby, Eckleburg’s medical practice is gone but his presence through his eyes still remain. I have interpreted Eckleburg as a memory of the past and a reminder. Elliot’s eyes reminds Janet throughout the story of the memory of her past and Elliot. This is explored where Janet sees the eyes which leads her into one of her flashbacks. At first, my central motif, eyes were originally seen to be sinister and I would have...

...have shaped my life. As a child, I was exposed to stories from a variety of stories from a myriad of cultures. Kenyan, First Nations, Norse, Middle Eastern, and Greek myths served as my first bedtime stories. When I learned how to read, the stories I ingested became more varied. They were no longer solely fictional, nor were they so polarized. These taught me about history, people, imagination, morality, and the world outside of me. Stories also served as my primary method of connecting with people. Listening to their stories, sometimes telling my own, and talking about other stories is what allowed me to form deep connections with people extraordinarily different from my self. My interest in learning was fostered by stories, however...

...Fiction and the Work Environment Paper When reading a short story, poem, or even novel the author often attempts to provide the audience with some type of personal connection to a variety of components to the reading. An author may select very personable, hardworking, and unselfish characters to allow the audience to connect in some way with the main or subordinate characters; or the author may elect to provide a common type of setting to provide the readers an additional way to connect to the literature. Mona Simpson’s short story entitled “Coins” (Scheckner & Boyes 2008) is a story which provides many opportunities for the reader to make some type of personal connection by providing a story of an untraditional family setting. Simpson’s story provided a few important lessons that people need to keep in mind as they go about their daily lives. The short story sheds light to what should be important in a person’s life; what should be a priority, the lessons taught to children through hard work and love. After reading Simpson’s “Coins” I was face to face with the lessons that the story presented, forcing me to take a look at my priorities and family, thus allowing me a moment to reflect on what I truly cherish in my life, which is the love for my family and the importance of teaching my children the qualities of hard work in order to appreciate all that we have. The story of Lola, the housekeeper/nanny, was one that I was easy to make personal connections to and provided...

...Within my second grade special education classroom, there are a wide variety of student needs and abilities present. Each student has unique learning styles, preferences, and interests. Although there are many differences among my students, I have also noticed some similarities. Throughout the past few weeks I have noticed that many of my students struggle with comprehension. All of my students have reading goals. Reading accurately and fluently is difficult for them. However, even when a story is read aloud, the majority of students are unable to retell the story or answer comprehension questions. To assist my students with reading comprehension, I have created a differentiated lesson to implement during small group instruction. Differentiate What, How, and Why For this...

...My whole life I’ve been surrounded by stories; my culture thrives on stories, especially those about my ancestors, nature, religion, and rituals. Many of our cultural stories are ancient and appear mythological, yet most of our village considers them valuable and true. However, I refuse to believe these ancient tales. Believing these stories would only inhibit my desire for my family to become something greater than what we already are. Beyond these cultural stories, my village constantly bombards me with stories and gossip of my family. Our people blame me for my family’s actions; everyday is a battle for me to work towards clearing our family’s name amongst our people. However, this is incredibly difficult for me as my family is often selfish and cannot see how their actions affect others, especially me. As a Christian and devout woman of God, I find it my duty to take on sacrifices in order to advance myself spiritually and socially. Every Sunday I go to church alone; I can’t bare the thought of bringing our corrupt family with me. Of course I pray that our family members would be baptized, but I have to worry about saving my own soul. For this reason, I sacrificed for my sister, Laura, and raised her son, Tayo. During Laura’s lifetime, I was responsible for fixing her mistakes as I had always been more virtuous and spiritual than her. When we were young, Laura’s drunkenness and lust concerned our people and they feared they were losing not only her, but also themselves...
