INTRODUCTION

In this paper I will focus on the reasons why European Christianity (both Protestant and Catholic) has declined. In order to do this we will study a couple of factors. First, the major factors that aided in shift of the decline. What effect did the “Thirty Year War’ have on the overall decline of European Christianity. What effect did “The Thirty Year War” have concerning religious commitment and civil and political concerning life? Then I will focus on other factors that brought Europeans Christianity to the point that it came to in the past, and look at other factors as well. Finally, I will paint a clear picture as to the effect of all the concerns that I have taken place (years of war), and look to see the positive and the negative effect all the different changes has brought.

Wars of Religion

These wars set the stage regarding the progress and the decline regarding Christianity, one would think that this form of action (War) would somehow aid in the advancement of Christianity (this not the case). Then religious values were regarded as of primary concern. The great thinkers on political and economic subjects usually based their ideas on religious principles. The major wars were Wars of Religion.[1] As we read from the above statement, the religious values are a major concern, even to the point that war would breakout. So it is of these values that war wages forth, but the wars that should have aided in bringing the thought of religious ideas, has brought about “The war of Religion”. It was thought that through these wars that peace would somehow be brought of this, but we study this is not the case. The damage from the thirty years of war along with other situation), brought in other factors that cause the goal of Christianity to shift.

Meanwhile it was the people that stuffed in these religious wars.[2] It is without a doubt that the wars that took place in Europe were also related to other issues. But the struggle had a great deal to do with the political and religious order that was within the state at that time. I can only imagine that there was a great amount of tension within the empire at this time. The war that took place, between the Protestants and the Catholic, was brought about because they had a need to protect their religious beliefs within the German Society. Also, we see the war had a devastating effect on Germany; also they've lost a lot as it concerns the population in that area because of the war. Towards the end of the war we realize the loss of the religious significance and the struggle. In the year 1630, when the Thirty Years' War ceased to be a War of Religion and was suddenly transformed into a war of competing nationalisms.[3] Though at this point war had somewhat slowed down there was still a great deal of tension, and at times other wars would take place.

The Peace of Westphalia 1648

As I think of the Peace of Westphalia, I have come to the understanding that because they have reached an understanding regarding the wars (that brought peace thirty years), one would think that these action could causes both side to treat each other better, but as we come to an understanding, this isn’t the case. Before I continue, let me explain the meaning of “The Peace of Westphalia”, while other continued to profit from the war (France and Sweden), even through the completion of the negotiation was completed.

The Peace of Westphalia revolves around an agreement between all parties, and with this agreement everyone was free to follow their own religion.[4] Also this agreement was thought to bring about a fresh understanding of the God they all served, but this wasn’t the case at all, it continued to bring apprehension, and this was thought was brought on by the all parties. The title alone brings about a clam and a reassurance that problems are being solves and the best is about to take place, but this is not the case. Problems continue to take place, and a cloud of uncertainty lay closed to the agreement.

Were we thought progress had happen, we see that a dark area of uncertainty remained. This continue to push the bigger picture further behind, to the point that the true reason the Word of God had been shad became misplaced. These actions along with a great deal of others continued to bring forth the decline of European Christianity. One of the reasons that the so called “Peace of Westphalia” continued not to aid in the growth of the Christian movement, was due to the apprehension that revolved around the war.[5] It is somewhat challenging to trust the individuals that you have been fight with for years. Furthermore, during these years of war the bigger picture became lost. They were fighting for a religious ground and of religious thought. There is never a winner concerning these matters. This is the reason I state that this along with other situation became the problem that aided in the decline of European Christianity. As we continue, we will see how thought process of the eighteenth and the nineteenth century had a role in aiding in the decline of Christianity in Europe.

The Age of the Rationalist

It is during this age the age of rationalism that man no longer has their focus on the things of God, but their focus is on themselves and their thoughts. Sin distorts human reason not only by blocking its ability to know God but even more so by perverting its orientation so that it sees itself, rather than God, as central.[6] It is also during this time that Holy Scripture loss the place that it always had in the lives of God people. This takes place because the focus is no longer on the source (God), but it is now on mans process of thought. Renaissance challenge institutional authority, its critical spirit, and its insistence upon the intellectual and spiritual freedom of the individual.[7]

As we read the above statement we gain a clear understanding of how this era helped to aid in the decline of Christianity in Europe. When man focuses on himself and God is no longer the center, this is a sure recipe for disaster. It is my thought that man can balance the thought process without tuning God, but this is not the case in this matter. During these times there was a great struggle concerning man Religion being the true Religion. These actions caused many wars and many battles, which should have point to one dominant thought as it relates to the church. This was not the case, as a matter of fact; it only brought about other deeper problems.

It’s during this time that man moved away from the power of God, to the power of reason.[8] Coming to what they thought was a great understating of the world, math, and science, brought about the advancement of an objective or interest in other areas, which brought this period away from the true God. This was the time of absolute uncertainty, because man at this time, focused on other areas outside of God, nothing could be for sure. To me, this action from man, at this time, speaks to apart of the process that caused the decline of Christianity in Europe.

Conclusion

In my paper I focused on three areas, Wars of Religion, The Peace of Westphalia 1648, and The Age of the Rationalist. It was my goal to shed light as to how and what, caused the decline of Christianity in Europe. I understand that these words I talked about are only a small part of a bigger picture. This paper showed the steps that brought man futher from the true source, which is God.

My thoughts are these. It is wasteful try to force others to see things the way you see them, these and other actions never work, as proved in our study. Finally, we must trust God, and know that He is in control, if we don’t, innocent people are injured, as is the case in the “Wars of Religion”.

...Lover Calls us to the Things of this World 1 Lover Calls us to the Things of this World Heather Waltman ENG125: Introduction to Literature Lover Calls us to the Things of this World 2 Lover Calls us to the Things of this World The poem I am choosing is Love Call us to the Things of this World by Richard Wilbur. This poem speaks of a man or woman who woke up from a night’s sleep. In this story I feel it is saying that no matter where life takes you one can do anything. In Wilbuer’s poem he gives us an insight into a spiritual world. He talks about how love can make you do crazy things for some one. There are all kinds of love when it comes to the spiritual part of love. This whole poem is talking about love and things that inter wind with the poem. The pulleys awake the man or women not a lot just enough for them to realize that they did not want to wake up. This is a feeling that God wanted them to know not to be scared and that he will guide them through anything and will help them as long as they want him too. God also wants them to know not to run from him. Lover Calls us to the Things of this World 3 In Wilbuer’s third section he talks about how a man or women is ready to accept what has for them...

...do you make your lead story and why? I would use the park story as my main story to report, because this is something that is going to affect the community whether it is good or bad. By releasing this to the community, they are able to react to what is going on and spread the word out the other people within that same community. The celebrity story would come second because this is a story that is going to be released worldwide so they will already know about the death. The death of this celebrity is not going to have an affect on what is happing in the community. I also want the viewers to know that our focus is on what is happing in the community. The celebrity death would be released over the Internet, radio, and on television. This is the same way that we will spread the information about the city closing down parks to save money. We could include different ways to how this will affect the city now and in the future. We could use this to the advantage of the people to figure out ways to raise money to keep the parks open and how they could save their community. The news station will still have the same ratings because they are targeting the local people and the people will spread the word to others to increase the ratings. We have to focus on what the viewers want to know. If we did not report anything about what is going on locally and the viewers found out about this, this could potentially affect the station because they would think that we do not care about what is going...

...The richest man in the world explains how to save the planet. At 58, Bill Gates is not only the richest man in the world, with a fortune that now exceeds $76 billion, but he may also be the most optimistic. In his view, the world is a giant operating system that just needs to be debugged. Gates' driving idea – the idea that animates his life, that guides his philanthropy, that keeps him late in his sleek book-lined office overlooking Lake Washington, outside Seattle – is the hacker's notion that the code for these problems can be rewritten, that errors can be fixed, that huge systems – whether it's Windows 8, global poverty or climate change – can be improved if you have the right tools and the right skills. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the philanthropic organization with a $36 billion endowment that he runs with his wife, is like a giant startup whose target market is human civilization. Personally, Gates has very little Master of the Universe swagger and, given the scale of his wealth, his possessions are modest: three houses, one plane, no yachts. He wears loafers and khakis and V-neck sweaters. He often needs a haircut. His glasses haven't changed much in 40 years. For fun, he attends bridge tournaments. ...As it can looks to you this dollar bill is kind of normal. But it is not for me. I have this dollar bill for several years when my brother gave it to me when he came back from Boston where he spent a year. Since that day, as I was the little brother, I always kept it close to me as a prize and promised to myself that I will also make everything possible to have my experience in this country, as he did. And now it is happening so I thought it was interesting to use this bill to describe myself as it kind of helped me to be here. This dollar bill represents me with its doubles sides, its flexibility and how connects people. As you all know a dollar bill has two sides. There is the most important side that everybody knows. Then we have the other side, where people pay less attention. This represents me because I have kind of two personalities. There is the first one which is used with most of the people I know where I think how to behave or what to say. Then there is the other side that only a few people can see. These two parts also represents me on the fact that I am someone who takes work very seriously but on the other hand I am a person who really likes to party. There is also the fact that I want to have a common life with a work but I also want to discover new things. The second fact that interests me about this dollar bill it is its flexibility. As you can see you can fold it and it can fits everywhere. This represents me because I am someone who can...

...area. We all need to make a living that makes us happy. Job satisfaction directly affects our entire lives in many ways. Based on a 40 hour work week, we spend almost twenty-four percent of our lives each week at what we do for a living. The National Sleep Foundation provides statistics that says that an average American sleep 6.7 hours per night. Taking this statistic and placing it in the equation and the percentage rises to a full 33%! One-third of our waking hours per week are dedicated to work. For many, working for the man suits them just fine. As well, many choose to pave their own road for a career. No matter what we do there is a sense of satisfaction that we all must experience in our careers. Having experienced both, I can say that there are inherent differences that divide the choice of, “Being THE MAN” versus “Working for THE MAN”. The following is a comparison based on my experiences alone. I have listed them from my most important to least. Perhaps they are shared by others but these are my views. Dear Diary

...Dear Diary, Wherefore is this happening? How did this happen? And why is this happening to me? Do I really deserve this? Is this some punishment for something I’ve done? Is it because my name is Hero? Dear Lord tell me why. I’ve been sitting here for hours just thinking about yesterday. It seems like every time I do think about it my heart shatters even more as tears run down my face like two never ending rivers. While I sit, I ask God over and over what did I do to deserve this. But of course there is no answer or reply. There are a couple of things that really hurt me yesterday and I mean REALLY!!! I was so hurt when Claudio said I as in me cheated on him when I know I did no such thing. Doesn’t he know how much I love him? Then another thing is my father; how could he say those things? How could he want to kill or disown me like that? He says he’s ashamed of me but after hearing what he said it is I who is ashamed of him. He should believe me because I’ve never done anything to sway his trust in me. I’ve been a loyal and faithful daughter. But the good things about this situation are that the Friar, Beatrice, and Benedick believe me. For this I am most thankful because it shows me who I can really trust. Now, there’s a plan for me to play dead so that Claudio can feel guilty for ‘killing’ me. The thing is even if I am madly and undeniably in love with him will I be able to forgive him easily. I feel the same towards my father will I forgive him easily...

...The Wheatley House I realized as I was watching this that there are a lot of people that need help from others. It may not be there fault. Specifically in this film it shows the woman coming from other countries trying to make a better life for their families. As they did this they are not stuck her in the United States without a job and they also did not have anywhere to stay. The thing that stood out to me the most was that no one was helping these woman and they were actually mad that they were immigrating into the states. The thing I learned about this movie is that there is always someone in need of some help. It does not have to be people immigrating from another country and not being able to find a job but there are people who cannot afford things such as food and shelter for their children and they need help. Most of them do not ask for help I have come to realize. In the film I kept thinking about that. They did not ask for help because they felt like no one was going to help them or they just felt ashamed. Some things I have insights about in this case is that people should try to help others if they see that they need help because those people are not going to ask for help. They feel to ashamed. I can apply this by trying my hardest in my everyday life to help others. It does not have to be in a very large scale right now because I don’t have a big voice to be heard right now because I am just a college student. I can make a difference in someone’s life though. ...stress? Stress is your body’s reaction to the things which you perceive as pressures. Stress occurs when you feel that you cannot cope with those pressures. Our bodies are designed to react in 2 ways to stress: to fight against the pressure, or to run from it. This is called the fight or flight response and it is controlled by the release of a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol makes your body react in ways that allow you to fight harder or run faster and it focuses your attention on the thing causing you stress. This response enables you to deal with stress effectively by either battling to get through the problem, or by removing yourself from a situation which is causing you to feel stressed. Sometimes we see so many pressures around us that stress can become a long term problem. Although being stressed for short periods of times can be good for us, long term stress can have negative consequences and lead to problem such as high blood pressure, anxiety and depression. © Microsoft Stressors Stressors are the things around us which can cause a stress response. I just really hope that it’s working as intended to be.” “That’s good, you’ll be up and well again in no time. Don’t worry - you’ll get used to those implants soon.” “I really do hope so…” The pale girl was still uneasy despite what the physician said, probably just because she was still recovering from her recent operation. It was just like what most patients that have undergone a major one would feel. Everything looked mundane and seemed in order. The room’stemperature regulated, spacious enough, and everything was tidied and regularly checked by sanitary personnel; the flowers on the vase on top of the table beside her bed was frequently changed by her visitors. However, there was something that kept bothering her periodically during her whole stay in the hospital while recovering. She could not describe nor explain it, but there is definitely something bothering her. “Well I’ll be going now Ms. Lilde. Make sure you call any of the nurses immediately if ever something happens again.” “Will do sir.” “I’ll see you again later for your next check-up.” The physician left the room after checking the condition of the girl’s eyes. She was still not allowed to remove the bandages and open her eyes yet but seeing that she’s in a steady rate of recovery, it would just be a short amount of time now before she could finally see the light again.
