On Richard Wright’s Novel, Native Son, Thomas Bigger’s horrible decisions are mainly caused by the wrong expectations of others. Wright expressed this idea simply by using lit devices such as symbolism and metaphor. Throughout the chapters, Thomas Bigger was portrayed as this stereotype “thug” African American where he commits a crime such as theft and murder. However, Thomas Bigger’s horrible actions and decisions were influenced by the expectations of people surrounding him. For example, the American History held horrific events including segregation and racism against the Colored People in early 1900s, same decade when Native Son was written. Bigger, in fact, helped out a rich white girl, but because of people’s expectation that he would do something bad to Mary, he ‘accidentally’ suffocated her. I can simply prove this claim, on page 86 the quote “then, convulsively, he sucked his breath in and huge words formed slowly, ringing in his ears : she’s dead.” This quote is strong enough to prove that he “accidentally” suffocated Mary, due to the emotions shows in this quote, the way how he is nervous and how he is shocked, proves that the intention of killing the daughter of a white millionaire is not present in Bigge’s mind. To prove that expectations of people surrounding Bigger influence his decisions specifically White people, some quotes are provided. One quote that proves that expectations of people around Bigger influence his horrible decisions can be found on pages 40-42. Between Bigger’s friend, they’re expecting him to be tough, ruthless, and unafraid of white people. However, Bigger is scared of white
