Background Information:
Sir Thomas Albery Blamey was born in 1884, on the 24th of January. He was born in wagga wagga new south wales, he died on the 27th of may 1951 at the age of 67 in Heidelberg, victoria. He was 1 of ten children, the family grew up in lake albert, Wagga Wagga. Blamey began working life as a trainee school teacher, he taught at the Lake Albert school and then transferred to South Wagga Public School. He moved to WA in 1903, there he taught at an all boys school for three years, and he also coached a rifle shooting club. Thomas served in both first and second world wars and his rank was a field marshal.
Why he Enlisted: He saw this as a new opportunity, he passed the exam, coming 3rd in australia but he didn't get an appointment because there weren't vacancies in WA. Blamey has been frowned upon for letting some Australian troops be sent on the expedition to Greece while he knew it was very dangerous after he was told that Menzies had approved. Blamey insisted on sending the 6th Division first alternatively of the 7th Division, this ended in a heated argument with Wavel, Blamey won. blamey knew about the odds of success and he quickly planned evacuation plans, this save many of his men although he lost credibility when he chose his son to fill the remaining seat in the aircraft carrying them out of Greece. While Rowell and Brigadier William Bridgeford were extremely critical of Blamey's performance in Greece, this opinion was not widely held. Wavell reported that "Blamey has shown himself a fine fighting commander in these operations and fitted for high command.
