Prometheus bound was a painting that was done with oil by Thomas Cole. In his painting, he is able to achieve among many things, the central theme; suffering. The sunbather is drawn looking at his tan. In his drawing, Cole can shown some kind of earnestness and calmness. Through his style, he can demonstrate romanticism in an exotic and strange manner. The materials used are those of the canvas and his technique involves oil. The painting is roughly 240 by 165 centimeters (Noble). Similarly, through the art, Thomas Cole depicts it as a punishment that could bring fire on earth (Junker, pg. 40). The mountain is drawn in a massive way, but it is contradicted by the small size of the titan. This contradiction between the large size of the mountain and the small size of the titan makes the viewer to overlook his painting. Through this style, Cole helps to explain that Prometheus is not bound to the mountain top but to the earth itself. First, it is important to note that unlike Cole use of sublime qualities in his work, Fredrick Church does not use them. Although the mountain drawings in most of his painting are rugged, they are just used to add beauty to the scene. Although both artists are able to represent some kind of wildness, Frederick style is intimidating, and almost works hand in hand with the environment. Unlike Cole, who uses unbalanced trees and grassland in the Prometheus bound, Fredrick’s work uses a balanced landscape with respect to trees and meadows. Through the use of balanced grassland, the viewer gets a feeling of lying back under the shade although staying away from the dangerous environments (Meyer). In Frederick’s painting, he could depict painting in a contracting manner. His manipulation of the landscape helps him to achieve essential elements in art.
