Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States. Before he was a president he was known as a one of the smartest americans in the world. He was raised in Virginia and had a very great education, when he went off to college he studied almost everything there was. With all this knowledge he was often seen to have a darker side that no one was able to figure out, this earned him the name “American Sphinx”. He was elected and became president in 1800, but before he was elected he had a little help from Hamilton who helped him win the election in the first place. Jefferson originally just wanted to buy new orleans, but the deal grew and napoleon offered him the whole louisiana purchase. WHen buying this the country nearly doubled its size. What happened after buying all this land was a very big mess. Jefferson had to send out Lewis and Clark and some crew members to follow the mississippi river upstream until they reach the ocean. When lewis and clark reached the end they realized there was a huge amount of mountains in the way for them to be able to get to the ocean. On there way back from this upsetting discovery Clark and the crew leave to go home and Lewis ends up killing himself. Safe to say that the Lewis and Clark expedition was a complete failure. Jefferson did not even realize they went missing or did not return until a few years after. Before Lewis and Clark have returned Jefferson was fighting something a little bigger at the time. Jefferson was going to try and stop England from blowing up our ships. To stop this problem he comes up with the “Embargo Act of 1807”. This act prevents all trade to foreign countries is not allowed in the attempt to save sailors, ships, and to prevent war. He then left office just like how it is, with all problems and nothing solved. His only request before he died was that on his tombstone his presidency was not
