I was very nervous when I first received this exercise because I had the not even the slightest idea on how to handle a negotiation. The Thompson reading definitely helped ease my anxiety about the exercise and taught me all the basic skills needed to have a successful negotiation. This negotiation went a lot better than I thought and both parents got what they wanted and we tried to arrange everything while having the children’s best interest at the center of every decision that we made. One of the first things the Thompson article mentioned was to identify your key goals, brainstorm your options, and then to plan your opening move. Our client was very adamant in making sure he had some sort of legal custody over the children so we first argued for sole custody, but our adversaries also want sole custody to go to Joan. We were very aggressive on the point of custody and basically said there is no way that …show more content…
We figured that we would start off with being nice and cordial, and only get aggressive when it came to items such as the house or custody which were two big things we knew we wanted to win. Surprisingly, the house was a very simple battle to win. We knew that there was no way we could kick the mother from the home especially since she had physical custody of the children. Therefore, we agreed that in lieu of paying child support that Tom would continue paying for the mortgage and the maintenance of the house as long as he got sole ownership of the house, we added one contingency to this arrangement, we stipulated that Tom will continue for the house only till the kids move out or till the time Jake turns 22, depending on whichever comes first. This is where we ended on the first day of negotiations and we were fairly confident that the rest of the negotiations would be smooth sailing because we dealt with what we thought were the two biggest

Prior to accepting the offer I received a call from the buyer’s agent, named Rong, inquiring as to why the property had been in and out of escrow three times. I explained our past experiences with buyers getting cold feet and backing out of escrow. As more and more women are moving into decision-making positions, the issue of whether there are gender differences in the ability to manage conflict and to lead effectively has become an important concern. This literature review examines 14 studies that address the role of gender in conflict resolution and leadership. Studies from areas of conflict resolution, negotiation, and leadership are included. Evidence is provided that while women and men are, in fact different from one another, neither outperforms the other in all situations. In fact, while some researchers claim a male advantage in a male-oriented world, others assert a feminine advantage for 21st century leaders. Implications for women leaders are included. Conventional wisdom says that conflict management skills are important if individuals are to function effectively at any level within an organization.
