Burst Pipe Research Paper

...Ways to Prevent a Burst Pipe A burst pipe can be a minor inconvenience or a major problem. Frozen pipes break because blockages cause downstream water pressure to increase, not because of expanding ice against the pipe wall. Burst pipes that go unnoticed can cause flooding, which may cause mold or rot. Therefore, following the three tips below will prevent burst pipes. Keep Faucets Running If the temperature really drops, homeowners should keep at least one faucet running at all times. This is because moving water prevents pipes from freezing. While this may feel wasteful, only a trickle of running faucet water should be enough. In some cases, a slow drip will be sufficient. In most houses, one running sink faucet is enough to prevent freezing...

It deteriorates the nutrients of the soil thus creating problems to farmers. Hence, the researcher would like to study if this grass can be a substitute as thermal insulating material. If it can be an alternative, this research would really give great help to many farmers. Objectives of the Study The main objective of this study is determine whether Cogon grass can be a substitute as thermal insulator as compared to other traditional thermal insulating materials. Specifically, this study aims to:   1. determine the thermal resistance (R) of Cogon grass as thermal insulating material;   2. determine the thermal conductivity (k) of Cogon grass as thermal insulating material;   3. determine how much heat (Q) trasmit to the layer of the Cogon grass per second; and,   4. determine how much is the temperature gradient or temperature difference per unit thickness of...

Holiday Fire Hazards

...this time many people choose to celebrate these holidays by decorating their homes with electric lights, candles, banners, wreaths and the ever so famous Christmas tree. These decorations are meant to spread cheer and joy but unfortunately may increase the chances of fire in the home. Based on data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), in 2011 there were an estimated 240 home fires involving Christmas trees and another 150 home fires involving holiday light. Together, these fires resulted in 21 deaths and $25.2 million in direct property damage. Each year, newspapers have tragic stories of families killed during the holiday season by fired ignited by the family Christmas tree and other holiday decorations. Typically, shorts in electrical lights or open flames from candles, lighters or matches start tree fires. A dried out live tree is easily combustible. Candles, which carry open flames, that are not properly placed can be knocked over and ignite anything flammable around them. Pixie lights can also be fire culprits during the holiday season often due to improper use. Many people tend to overload the extension cords they use for their holiday lights and leave them plugged in 24hrs per day. Following a few simple fire safety tips can keep electric lights, candles, and the ever popular Christmas tree from creating a tragedy in your home. Airport Sustainability

...Airport Sustainability Theresa James Sustainable Marketing 12/1/15 Abstract The Air Transportation Association (ATA) and International Air Transportation Association (IATA) have been responsible for maintaining sustainability in the Aviation sectors of today’s markets. There are three indicators that the ATA and the IATA use; they are environmental, economic and social.  The airline industry believes that by reducing their carbon footprint they may be able to attract conscientious travelers.   Many airports worldwide are recognized for their contributions for their sustainable practices in the sector Air transportation is considered to be an essential in a modernized society. However, air transportation causes harsh impact on the environments. The air transportation system is considered to be the number one cause of air pollutants, especially Carbon dioxide. “Emissions from air transportation have continuously increased over time, accounting for about 4% of carbon emissions from developed countries.” (Safe Guarding Our Atmosphere, 2011) Demand for air transportation and airport capacity continues to rise, but is impacted by environmental limits, such as land use compatibility. According the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) 2011 forecast, one billion passengers are projected to be flown in 2021 and aviation growth over the next five years is expected to jump 5.3%. Adopting sustainable measures is a slow process and goes beyond the minimum environmental requirements...

The Importance of Energy Efficiency in Home Appliances

...The Importance of Energy Efficiency in Home Appliances Written by admin on August 15th, 2011 Due in large part to the current economic, energy, and environmental crises, product developers are putting particular emphasis on energy efficiency – as are nature-friendly consumers. Widespread effort to use the minimum amount of energy for maximum mechanical functioning is the aim of product developers and consumers – a fortunate trend since advances and personal effort in this field are essential for everyone’s well-being. Technology in everyday household appliances has made significant progress over the past 20 years, and brands are a ferocious competition to put out the most advanced and efficient products. The well-respected ENERGY STAR program brands, with its logo products that are technologically up to par, are making it easier for consumers to make wise choices regarding their household items. ENERGY STAR evaluates a wide variety of products including appliances, electronics, and construction equipment. Those in search for new appliances are well-advised to consult the ENERGY STAR list of approved products beforehand! [1] In addition to keeping an eye out for the best products, it benefits the individual to know what makes a product energy efficient, mechanically speaking, and how they can maintain their appliances to function optimally while using as little energy as possible. This is beneficial not only for the environment, but also for one’s electric bills. Refrigerators ...

Aqa P1 Revision Booklet

...Physics Unit 1 Revision (higher tier) Energy There are 9 different forms of energy: Light Heat Chemical Kinetic (movement) Electrical Elastic (Gravitational) potential Nuclear Sound Energy is never created or destroyed! Energy is transferred from one form to another form. Not all of the energy transferred by a device is useful energy. Potential energy is stored energy. All energy will eventually spread out to the surroundings as heat. Sample question 1 Sankey diagrams and efficiency Sample sankey diagram for a light bulb Sankey diagrams are ways of representing the different energy transformations that take place in different electrical devices. The start of the sankey diagram shows the total energy going into the device. The diagram then splits off into different sized arrows to represent the other energy transfers that take place, the bigger the arrow the larger the energy. The energy entering the device must equal the energy leaving the device. To know how good a device is at transferring energy you need to be able to calculate the efficiency. To do that you need to use the following equation (which will be given in the exam) OR So for the above example the answer would be Efficiency= 10100=0.1 The closer the efficiency is to 1 the more useful energy the device is transferring. So for the light bulb example we got an efficiency of 0.1, so the light bulb isn’t very good and transferring useful energy. Sample question 2 ...
