...Commentary Essay Purpose: The purpose of commentary is not simply to report things but to give readers a way to make sense of them. A commentary will help you write critically about a topic and will help you analyze this topic within a larger societal context. Audience: Your audience for this paper should be one who has a stake in the topic. For example, if you are discussing your understanding of a topic like ISTEP testing, your audience could be administrators. Genre: For this paper, your genre is in the form of a commentary. Stance: Your stance should be formal in that you are writing to an academic audience who will be making meaning of your topic. However, you may use the pronoun “I” to discuss your position. Media/Design: This paper should be typed and take the form of an essay: 4-6 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman, with title page. • Give readers something to react to, think about or use to make sense of topic. • You will not use an objective tone or take a neutral stance; you have a perspective. • You are attempting to analyze and explain what is going on around you. • You are asking your readers to consider one possible way of making sense of what has happened in the past and what is going on in the present. • Your readers want a satisfying account of our shared experience and to find patterns of meaning that can make the world make more sense. • Approach your readers as co-thinkers, you are asking them to look at...

...RESEARCH PAPER FFD 122: History of Art and Design 2, Spring 2010 GUIDELINES 1. PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH PAPER: One of the aims of History of Art and Design is to develop a historical and critical sensibility about artistic and cultural production. To test this ability, you will prepare a research paper about an object of art or design of your choice, based on the “Five Contexts of Art and Design” topics of this semester: MAKING, STYLE, IDEOLOGY, USE and MEANING. 2. CONTENT OF THE RESEARCH PAPER: Your chosen artwork/design CAN NOT be from an artist or an example that has been discussed in class. Check the course syllabus for a list of all works that are in the lectures. You are advised to choose a well-known work of a famous artist/designer so that you can easily find sources related to that work. You are discussing your chosen object, NOT its photograph. Do not talk about your object’s image but its ACTUAL three-dimensional reality, as much as you can understand it. Keep in mind the sub-themes for each of the themes of the semester because you will write about ONE sub-theme from each theme. | | | | |MATERIALS: How the choice of materials made by the artist or designer influences the form of the end | | |product. ...

...Writing a research report The following is a general guide to writing a research report focused on GIS, spatial analysis, or modeling. See the general resources page for other guides for writing and research. This presents some standard conventions for writing journal articles but highlights where you may want to make changes for a class report or thesis. Journal article. The 'standard' format used by most journals is a bit restrictive because it reflects traditional publishing practices. Figures and tables, for example, are usually attached as separate pages at the end of your text instead of being embedded in the text itself because it is easier to photograph them for publishing and the text itself is easier to typeset. Class report. Class reports are less restrictive in form and content than journal articles but they still share many characteristics. Conventions such as line double spacing and use of 12 point serif fonts like Times New Roman are designed to make it easier for your reader to review the paper and provide annotations where necessary. Take special notice of the "Top 10 Checklist" as these are items that are particularly important for class reports. Quick Links: Report structure General Considerations Top 10 Checklist References Report Structure The paper should be divided into sections that make the logical sequence of the argument clear. Common sections are described below. Treat these as what they are, suggestions. Some things, like the...

... Which Paper Towel Will Absorb The Most Water? By Rachel Martin Project Design Plan The paper towel experiment is a project that determines which paper towel brand will absorb the most amount of water in a given time period. Literature Review There are many different brands of paper towels in the supermarkets. They are claim to be the best or have the best absorbency over their rivals. There have been many experiments involving the absorbency of paper towels. Samantha P. tested four different brands of paper towels, which were Bounty, Scott, Sparkle and Western Family. Her prediction was that Bounty paper towels would be the most absorbent based on research on the internet. The constant in the experiment was the size of each paper towel and the amount of water. The manipulated variable was the different brands of paper towels and responding variable was the amount of water left over after experiment. The results indicated that Sparkle brand paper towels were actually the most absorbent, which rejected her hypothesis that Bounty was the most absorbent. (Samantha P., 2000) Kalix Martin tested four brands of paper towels for absorbency: Bounty, Target store brand, Viva, and Brawny. Martin’s hypothesis was that Bounty would be the most absorbent of the four paper towels. The constant in this experiment was the size of the bowls, the same amount of water, the same size of paper towels, and...

...Writing a Research Paper in Literary Studies1 The most important aspect to bear in mind is that you are writing a research paper and not an essay! This means that you are arguing a thesis with reference to secondary literature – it is essential that you conduct relevant research and that you integrate your findings into your paper. Things to keep in mind: • Your paper should have a well-defined topic and a precisely formulated argument. • Your approach should be recognizably systematic. • Your argument should remain relevant and clear-cut, consistent and coherent throughout. • Your secondary material should be discussed critically and documented accurately. • Writing is a process; you should constantly revisit and revise. DON’T FORGET TO PRINT, SIGN AND ATTACH THE “PLAGIATSHINWEIS”! First steps Many students neglect the preliminary work of the writing process, but if you give it sufficient attention the actual writing of your paper will be faster and more organized than if you just start writing. The most important thing is to be systematic in your approach. 1. Finding a topic Perhaps the most difficult part of any research paper is finding an adequate topic, formulating a title and making a coherent argument. Once you have decided on a topic or a title, which in literary studies will most likely involve a certain text, rephrase it as a question to guide your research. You should also think about the methodology you intend to apply to your analysis. • ...

...Brian Piersall Vincent Portillo Proposal for an Inquiry Paper 4/13/11 Border Crime Background: The blanket topic of border crime has always held a great amount of interest for me. I have done a few other papers on the topics of immigration, and the Mexican drug cartels. Through those papers I have learned a great deal, however I have only ever researched the problems along the Mexican-American border. Through this paper I have started branching my research out to include criminal activities along the other border as the Canadian-American border and the oceanic borders. In addition to already having done some research on one part of this topic, there is another reason that caused me to be interested in this topic as well. This reason was the main event that was the spark that lit the flame of curiosity in me, and it occurred on one of the many trips down into Baja Mexico that my father and I take almost every year. This particular incident took place around two to three years ago in some small Mexican down about some odd two hundred miles down into Baja. Back then I had no real interest in the problems that occurred along our borders any more than what I would see from time to time in the newspapers or on TV. I didn’t really realize that there was a real problem with the Mexican Cartels; I like many Americans was blind to what was going on outside of my own little bubble in my own little town. However after this trip I realized that there were problems in Mexico...

...Psychology and Multicultural Psychology Paper This paper will describe how social psychology can be defined and expanded; by the influence it has social on others. Describing the primary research strategies used in social psychology that can involve variables and hypotheses, along with separating social and multicultural psychology in to two distinct fields. Social psychology can be defined as the scientific attempt to explain how the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of other human beings (Fiske, 2010). These social influence can have an affects not only o our insignificant behavior but can also affects vital behavior, such as yielding to majority opinion over one’s own judgment, Fiske, Harris, & Cuddy, 2004)Our book gives us many example from the folding of paper to being in a cult. Any decisions a person makes can be based on the environment the y are in. The people you are around can have a great effect on who we because as a person and what your goals in life are. Most times when I watch the news I wonder why people choose to do crime and feel not remorse for what they do. Social psychology primarily analyzes what happens to people as individuals. When social scientists investigate the behavior of groups of people, they move toward the sociological end of social psychology; indeed, some social psychologists work in sociology departments. The primary research strategies used in these social psychology...

...Andrew Mosolovich Week 9 Assignment Professor Pavlov 06/07/2013 Is our environment being compromised from excessive use of different chemicals? This is the question that has been the ground for major debate for many years, is our advancements causing global warming? When debating global warming the first thing to consider is what the cause of global warming is, and the answer to this basic question is greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are natural gases such as CO2, Nitrous Oxide or Methane and are created in one of two ways. The first way is, through natural cycles, for instance, CO2 is released through animal respiration or plant photosynthesis. The alternative greenhouse gas production comes from man’s use of different fuels and products; this can lead to anthropogenic climate changes. Anthropogenic Climate Changes are changes in the atmosphere brought on by human activity, and there is evidence of these kinds of changes all over. By studying the size of the polar ice caps we can see that they are shrinking and this may be due to a warmer atmosphere temperature brought on by none other than an anthropogenic climate change. An IPCC report from 2007 showing levels of some of the greenhouse gases also shows that the levels of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere has skyrocketed since the post-industrial era, this can only be attributed to man-made machines that have come to rise. So how does human activity attribute to the climate rise? Greenhouse gases are natural...
