The Problem and its Settings
Background of the Study
Time is a very important concept for everyone, especially for BSA students who want to graduate and earn a degree. In a short span of time, a student must do his assignments, pass projects before or on the deadline, and for graduating students, there’s the pre-review courses which require a lot of reading and problem solving. Time becomes even more important when they enter the professional industry since an accountant has to deal with periodic reporting and tax return filing deadlines. One would easily conclude that without proper time management and good study habits, anyone will fail in anything. Thus this study aims to explore these factors and how it actually affects the academic performances of accounting students, especially the graduating ones. Time management, as defined by Wikipedia.org, is the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity. It is a skill that each BSA student must have in order to remain in the college. One accounting exam can cover a lot of chapters and the intervals between exams can be quite short for a lot of reviewing to be done. Without proper time management, a student would be cramming a lot of numerical and analytical information which can lead to confusion and bad scores. In a study conducted in Turkey on the necessity of effective time management required from students majoring in financial accounting, Abdülkadir PEHLİVAN stated that the competitive world that we live in today encourages us to plan early and manage our time effectively. It is important to study the effects of time management on the student’s performance because time is a limited resource. Meanwhile, there are also cases of time management issues for accounting students in the Philippines. According to Darwin Yu in his study about how much study habits, skills, attitudes affect the accounting students performance, teachers implement the skills course by continuously giving assignments, encouraging good study habits, asking students to budget their time, and of course, to “work hard.” This means that a student has a lot of things to learn and do in one sem and failure to do so could be detrimental to his grades. Even in Davao City, a survey about the study habits of the students in Ateneo de Davao University by Ryan Garcia shows that students are becoming curious as to what study habits are effective. Students have different preferences as to where and when to study and they have their own perceptions as to how it affects their learning, but there are not as many local researches to show how it affects their academic performance.
