...are significant dangers and risks that come with not getting enough shut eye and we don’t take them seriously. Insufficient sleep causes the inability to assess the safety of an environment, which can lead to accidents in the workplace. Other risks are obesity, poor heart health, poor mental health, lower mortality rates, depression, and anxiety. In addition to these dangers, having lack of sleep puts us at risk for being involved in automobile accidents. When we skimp on sleep, we are putting ourselves in danger of hurting ourselves and others around us. There are only 24 hours in a day, and as we get busier, we make everything but sleep a priority in our day. What we are really doing is setting ourselves up for destruction. When we are tired or under-rested, our brains cannot process things as accurately as they can when we have gotten a sufficient amount of sleep. William Dement expands on this in “Sleep Debt and The Mortgaged Mind”. “Sleep problems affect virtually every aspect of day-to-day living, including mood, mental alertness, work performance and energy level” (Epstein, 472). When we don’t give our bodies the sleep it needs, it cannot function physically or mentally in the capacity that we need it to in order to be safe. In “Sleep Debt and The Mortgaged Mind” written by William Dement and Christopher Vaughan, we learn about the horrible realities that come with skimping on sleep. Dement gives us two eye opening examples of horrible accidents that were caused by someone...

...unpleasant atmosphere, it’s a very unwelcoming and quite secretive as well. Harper Lee uses the method of personification in the first sentence when she says ‘it was a tired old town’. It makes us picture the town as an old man withering away over time. She also uses personification when introducing the courthouse, saying ‘it sagged in the square’ this also puts the image in our heads of a sad elderly who is not strong enough to live on for much longer. When she talks about Maycomb she talks in the past, she says ‘tired old town when I first knew it’ which makes us assume that Maycomb has changed for the better from when she was writing about it. We sense that Maycomb is badly looked after and that the citizens don’t care for it. ‘In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop’ we get the feeling that Maycomb would be a nicer place to live in if it was better looked after. The mood in Maycomb isn’t very bright either. ‘Nowhere to go…nothing to buy…nothing to see outside.’ We feel that Maycomb isn’t a very interesting place to live especially for children among the age of Scout because they had to entertain themselves, as there was nothing that Maycomb provided. Harper Lee writes in a way where we can tell what time period she is writing in. ‘Bony mules hitched to Hoover carts’ tells us that she is not writing in the modern times but in the past. She also tells us this by using a simile that refers to women as ‘soft teacakes’ as it implies that women in those days were very...

...Imagine a world where you are not able to do anything except sing. You are stuck on an island with two other people but can only sing. This is reality for the Sirens in the epic the Odyssey by Homer and the poem Siren's Song by Margaret Atwood. The Sirens are characters that have enchanting voices and makes anyone who hears them never want to go home, even the strongest people. However, these two writings are very different. The poet’s interpretation of the Sirens give us sympathy for the Homer's Sirens. This is because the two works describe two drastically different characteristics, such as how they feel. Homer describes the Odyssey Sirens as being scary and even enticing. Homer uses capturing language to tell of Odysseus’s voyage through...

...Chowdhury ENG 112 Prof: Stephen Clark 12/17/2015 Daily Working Life Poems are short or long paragraphs written by poets to impact largely on people's way of thinking. Claude McKay is a poet whose most of the poems are not always happy poems but they do give a nudge to people to think about normal daily stuffs in a very different perspective. I have read his poem called "Enslaved" and I have never felt so sympathy about the slavery that the African American people had to go through and how they felt about it. Then it was his another poem "If We Must Die" and it was so much filled with sorrow. I am writing about Claude McKay's poem "The Tired Worker" which actually touched me greatly though it was nothing related to my life style but still I could relate my daily life style to it and that is how Claude McKay's poems can really affect people. The poet in the poem "The Tired Worker" kept a lack of details which allows the readers to reflect themselves in a focus way, he also used a developing tone and imagery to guide the readers to think of their own life. The poet kept a convinient lack of details in the poem to help the readers fit themselves anywhere in the poem. "O whisper, O my soul! The afternoon. Is waning into evening, whisper soft! Peace, O my rebel heart! for soon the moon. From out its misty veil will swing aloft!", these are the first four lines of the poem and it is about a persom who is eagerly comforting himself or herself that it will soon be evening and...

...but the kids that don’t understand struggle and fall back and have difficulty learning it. Parents would rather they don’t have homework at all or finish all their work in school. Children rather spend more time doing something else like a sport or afterschool fun activity then be stuck in a chair for a matter of many an hour or two doing school work. Etta Kravolec pointed out in her article that in the 1920’s physicians were concerned about the homework that’s being given to children and the impact that its having with their health. Compared to the time kids spend outside to the energy they spend doing work you can conclude that they waste energy being active and moving around so by the tie they come in their worn out and tired. ...Karen L. Altamirano Nieto Bentson Writing 115 28 April 2015 Description Essay Many people would say that their home is a place where they enjoy spending their time because they can relax. Unfortunately it is not this way for me. The usual day at home for me consists of cleaning, dealing with crazy siblings, and college work. From the moment I walk in my house I am greeted by loud little voices saying, “Karen’s home!” My two younger siblings are sitting at the kitchen counter with multiple coloring books open, crayons everywhere, left-over food on their plates, and great big smiles on their faces. I look over to the left where I see a sink full of dirty dishes filled with scraps of food from the days before. At this point I am already dreading being home. I escape to my room where I can find some peace but shortly after my siblings come barging in. I can never have my own privacy. They start complaining about how one hit the other and about how one doesn’t want to share her toys. All I can think is, “I want to be left alone.” After I deal with them and send them off to their room, I turn on my forty inch Samsung Smart TV. I take off my shoes, change into my grey sweatpants, and white t-shirt. I think, “Finally I’m able to lay in bed and relax.” Wrong. Next door I can hear my mother hollering my name. I am forced to get up and walk towards the yelling voice. My mother is sitting up against her fluffy pillows on her large king size bed. She has the remote on one hand and a bowl...

...Assignment 2.3: Changing Our Lives Essay “Changing Our Lives” – Final Version * Assignment 1.3: Experiences as a Writer Paragraphs “Conquering My Fear of Writing” – Final Version “My Journey as a Writer” Aura Valdes ENG090 Prof. Rachel Hays December 15, 2012 “My Journey as a Writer” I have accomplished a great deal in the past three months. As the semester ends I find myself reflecting not only on how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. Writing is hard work. There is so much more to it than just writing an interesting story. I also learned another important lesson; just because I worked hard on an essay before presenting it and reviewed the daylights out of it did not mean it was ready for submission. Every time I went back to read it I found new changes, typos and other mistakes I had missed before. Reviewing and revising an essay is an essential part of writing. Reviewing allows me to rewrite and make changes in the essay’s content, organization and sentence structures. It allows me to add, remove, move or substitute words to make sure it communicates effectively the purpose of the essay. The task of reviewing the essays I wrote for this course allowed me to learn and improve my writing skills; as a result my essays have evolved into more stylish and fluent pieces of writing. Out of all the essays I wrote in this course, “A Book with Nostalgic Flavor” is my favorite and the one I would like to improve even further. I would...

...defense of black rage: Michael Brown, police and the American dream” on the website “www.salon.com“, August 12th 2014. But how does she manage to get her message out, and is she succeeded? Brittney Cooper is written about a problem, which has been affecting the United States for many years. And she is not the first one, who tries to make a difference. She complains the still on-going suppression of the Afro-Americans. “We are weak. We are tired. Of being punching bags and targets for the police.” The writer makes it clear, that this suppression has been going on for far too long, and the Afro-Americans are tried of being the target zone, without having the ability to resist. Therefore is the Afro-American woman Brittney Cooper mad. And she is writing mostly to white people. The white people, who cannot understand the Afro-Americans’ anger. The white people, who cannot understand the looting in Ferguson, which she did not support, but she is tired of playing indifferent: “I don’t support the looting in Ferguson, Missouri. But I’m also tired of “turning the other cheek” and forgiving”. And she is just one of the Afro-Americans, who are not going to accept the suppression any longer. It is clear to trace that Brittney Cooper is angry, at the way she writes. She starts her text with a short summary of the entire...

...Without metaphors and other figurative language things would be very bland. The reader can learn more from it. They can understand how they were treated and what they were going through. "We were withered trees in the heart of the desert" (Wiesel 37). Is better than saying we were tired in the concentration camp therefore the reader can understand it more. They realize how tired and broken they were without Wiesel actually saying that. Figurative language makes books more interesting, for example, "We can't let them kill us like that, like cattle in the slaughterhouse." This simile from the book reveals to the readers how careless the SS officers were when it came to killing people. If Wiesel wasn't going to use figurative language it wouldn't...

I do have some concerns with writing in the future, but I hope that my concerns don’t happen. The articles did a great job at explaining what writing skills we need in the work force and to improve on. Before I came to Murray State University for Engineering Graphics and Design. ...Are you sick and tired of the system deciding what good writing is supposed to look like?Well, let's stick it to them and start being bad writers.Since we start learning to write when we are young we instinctively write in a natural way that is not accepted enough by society.Instead of writing in the person's original way we need to follow formats of those in the past that even Nabi Tajima(oldest person alive)wasn't born yet.The inner magic of performing bad writing is so easy if you just retract the steps of everything you have learned from the past but it's, even more, deeper than that. To enter the realm of horrible writing, never and I mean never explain yourself.Let me explain, by explaining the writing it receives more life so if there is no life in the writing than its successfully atrocious. For instance, if you have a story don't mention the setting, barely mention the characters and be sure not to go deep into a plot.Hunger games would've been a hundred times better if it began twenty minutes before the movie ends and just use the end.No conclusion, no intro, just provide a confusing and unexplained ending which would be more successful guaranteed....

...Time to get ready for bed!" someone calls from the other room. Oh, no! You're really into the great book you're reading or that computer game that you're winning."Why do I have to go to bed?" you ask. "Sleep is boring, and I'm not even tired!"But sleep is more important than you may think. Maybe you can think of a time when you didn't get enough sleep. That heavy, groggy feeling is awful and, when you feel that way, you're not at your best. So if you're not too tired, let's talk about sleep. Why You Need Sleep The average kid has a busy day. There's school, taking care of your pets, running around with friends, going to sports practice or other activities, and doing your homework. Phew! It's tiring just writing it all down. By the end of the day, your body needs a break. Sleep allows your body to rest for the next day. Everything that's alive needs sleep to survive. Even your dog or cat curls up for naps. Animals sleep for the same reason you do — to give your body a tiny vacation. Your Brain Needs Zzzzzs Not only is sleep necessary for your body, it's important for your brain, too. Though no one is exactly sure what work the brain does when you're asleep, some scientists think that the brain sorts through and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems while you snooze. ...

...of the year to now, the end of the year, my writing process and skills have dramatically changed. My writing process coming into junior year was not vigorous; I would not begin the pre-write and just go straight into the writing process. Regrettably, I would procrastinate till the last night to actually begin my writing, therefore, I would rush my writing process. In addition, my evidence and commentary was poor. With this being the process for me as a writer, of course, my worse essay was the first writing assignment, the non-fiction essay. This piece of writing was a mess and I am pretty positive I did not even read over it after I was done. Luckily, I changed my habits over the course of the year and began organizing my time and writing better....
