Titian, also known as Tiziano Vecelli or Tiziano Vecellio in Italian, was the greatest Venetian artist of the sixteenth century. Titian was born in Pieve di Cadore in the Republic of Venice sometime between 1485 and 1490, the exact date of Titian’s birth is unknown. Titian died between the ages of 86 and 91, in August the twenty-seventh of 1576. Titian was a prolific and versatile artist who experimented with new forms of art (Pettinger, 2004). Tiziano’s family was well established in the area of Italy ruled by Venice. At a young age, 10 to 12 years old, Titian and his brother Francesco were sent to Venice with their uncle to find apprenticeship with a painter. A family friend arranged for them to be mentored by the Bellinis brothers, who at the time were the leading artists in the city. After being mentored for some time Titian joined Giorgio da Castel Franco, also known as Giorgione as an assistant (unknown, 2002-2015). Many critics found Titian’s work more impressive than Giorgione’s work.
