...2.2 The TMA Part I of TMA 01 is based on the following case study. Original Travel Original Travel is all about travel ideas – and as you can guess from its name, the company likes to create inspiring, hand-crafted trips for discerning clients. A young and energetic company, Original Travel was created in 2003 in response to changing expectations in travel early in the millennium. Its founders - Alastair Poulain, Nick Newbury and Tom Barber, all of whom are still with Original Travel - wanted to help adventurous travellers to find new travel experiences with greater levels of service and cooler places to stay. Their starting point was the ‘Big Short Break’ – interesting places to visit and interesting things to do within five hours of London. The growth of the company since then suggests they succeeded. According to the latest Pricewaterhouse-Coopers review of discretionary spending, holidays have been knocked off their traditional perch at the top, being relegated to number two on the list of must-buys. Top spot in these testing times goes to paying off credits card bills and bank overdrafts. Also, the last decade has seen further adoption of ebusiness platforms. This has made the general holiday market far more competitive over pricing. But it's only a minor setback for Original Travel, a firm that specialises in holidays that offer a little more than simply sun, sand and sangria. The London-based niche tour operator may have seen enquiries drop and may be left looking at...

...Dear Nick Newbury, Having had a chance to review the case study I have produced a short informal report to help you understand Original Travels external environment. I have identified the different stakeholders attached to Original Travel and briefly explored their concerns and contributions. ‘The concept of stakeholders is important for two reasons. First, it emphasises that stakeholder groups have different interests; second it illustrates the relationship between businesses and their external environments’. (Cited in The Open University B120 What is business? 2006, P.25). This can be further explored by using a STEEP model. (Cited in The Open University B120 What is business? 2006, P.17). By using a STEEP model and viewing the different types of stakeholders attached to Original Travel it should provide you with an accurate understanding of the external environment in which your company operates. A STEEP model considers five factors, which I have listed below and given examples. * Sociological factors-changes in age, patterns of work, gender roles, patterns of consumption, culture changes and country developments. * Technological factors-developments in technology and the effects on your business. * Economic factors-economic growth/shrinkage, interests rates, exchange rates, energy prices and levels of employment. * Environmental factors-how your business has an effect of the environment and how your customer base views this effect. * Political factors-local...

...In the future, special AI computers called "Cyber Systems" have been used in racing to help racers improve their abilities and reduce accidents. One of them is a machine called "Asurada", a super-intelligent AI computer developed by Sugo Corporation, which is being targeted by Smith, who wants to use it as a military weapon. As the system is built for racing, Sugo puts Asurada into a car called GSX and delivers it to the Cyber Formula GPX's qualifying round in Fujioka, however, during the delivery, the machine is attacked. The story focuses on a young 14-year-old boy named Hayato Kazami, the son of the designer of the car, who activates Asurada GSX in order to escape from Smith's men. But because of the machine has locked Hayato's driver data, he has no choice but to become a racer for the Sugo Team. In the first qualifier, he races heatly with Naoki Shinjyo from Aoi and ends up in third place. In the second qualifying round, Hayato meets Johji Ohtomo, a racer from Albatross DDT and become good friends. During Hayato's training at night, he is attacked by Smith's men. In the race, Asurada's tire blows up, Hayato barely completes the race in third place. Hayato made it into the final 10 rounds of the Cyber GPX mainly with Asurada's ability and luck, which makes him overconfident. In the first race, he false-started and got a 60-second time penalty. Hayato pushed Asurada too far and was forced to retire. This made him realize that he has next to no skill at all. Hayato went...

...Question: TMA 01 (Part 1): In your own words, define ‘inequality’, and provide two examples of this on city road. Answer: Inequality refers to a situation in society, where an individual or group of people have more opportunities, wealth or power than another individual or group. Some people in society may not be treated fairly due their religious belief, class, race, sexuality or financial status. In the following paragraphs I will give two examples of these inequalities on City Road in Cardiff. Example 1: One main inequality, which stands out for me on City Road are the people who have no choice and are forced to use the food bank. (The Open University, 2016). Some of the reasons for this would be unemployment, low income, benefit issues...

...Drawing on what you have learnt from the DD102 module materials and your work on TMA 01, outline some examples of difference on City Road, Cardiff. Word limit: 750 words In my previous TMA, I referred to ‘difference’ as ‘an indication of dissimilarity’ between groups of people. Blakeley and Staples specify sexuality and class, as contrasts between groups in contemporary society (Blakeley and Staples, 2014, p.25). This essay will give further insight into some of the differences that are present on City Road, Cardiff today. City Road accommodates people of varied socio-economic positions. By looking at people’s occupations and levels of income, it is possible to establish an understanding of the social scale that exists here. Their lifestyles are shaped by the choices that are available to them i.e. their sense of style, but also some constraints e.g. the amount that they can afford to spend on clothing. (Havard, 2014, p.38). Considering the grand design of the Mackintosh Centre and the fact that the families owned the land, it is reasonable to conclude that the owners were wealthy. Therefore, they had more options in terms of how they could control their expenditure in comparison to other members of the community. John Arthur is a homeless man, who has never experienced a day of work in his life. His level of income is very low as he begs for spare change - shown in ‘The life and times of the street: Part 1’ video (Open University, 2014). Moreover, John’s...

...TMA 01 Part 1 Part A Informal report of problems at The Lodge Bistro Chain using concepts from session 2, The External Environment (B120, Book 1). * Growing competition from surrounding food outlets * No healthy alternatives offered * No web based advertisement * Not appealing to the younger generation * No choice of less expensive meals or snacks Part B Using the STEEP model (B120, Book 1) I will highlight the problems at The Lodge Bistro in more detail. Sociological Factors The Bistro chains décor and menu are based on the original café opened in 1989 and are outdated. Although this image could be keeping the trade from your loyal older customers, they tend to visit less frequently and don’t have as much money to spend as mentioned in the case study. To appeal to younger and new customers, I would suggest modernising the appearance and updating the menu. Technological Factors With so many people using the internet it would seem that a website or social media page would be essential for your business to survive and grow. This will help you to reach new consumers and increase profits. Economic Factors With the price of everything rising in the economy, there are a lot of consumers on a budget. A range of lower priced snacks was implemented by one of your managers. If this proved popular I would suggest having a snack menu alongside your main menu. This type of system is popular in pubs and they have benefited from offering god value for money. (http://www...
