...Conflict is unavoidable Yes, it's human nature. We even have conflict within ourselves, without any outside interference. Given that we have to live with conflict, how can we adapt and adjust to make the process go more smoothly and create a positive end result? We can take our results from the TKI to learn new conflict resolution skills. Frequently, our emotions and desires can make communication difficult. Use the Thomas-Kilmann questionnaire to learn what others are doing in those situations and learn to understand your own behavior during tense moments. You can master these challenges with knowledge and practice. The Five Conflict-Handling Modes The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) assesses an individual’s behavior in conflict situations—that is, situations in which the concerns of two people appear to be incompatible. In conflict situations, we can describe a person’s behavior along two basic dimensions*: (1) assertiveness, the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy his or her own concerns, and (2) cooperativeness, the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy the other person’s concerns. These two dimensions of behavior can be used to define five methods of dealing with conflict. These five conflict-handling modes are shown below: C O M P E T I N G Competing is assertive and uncooperative, a power-oriented mode. When competing, an individual pursues his or her own concerns at the other person’s expense, using whatever...

...Health is both demanded and produced by individuals. Health is demanded because it affects the total time available for the production of income and wealth and because it is a source of utility itself. Ill health reduces both our happiness and our ability to earn (Dewar 2010).The medical and wellness models of health and healthcare in general have some similarities, but they also have some differences. The Medical model of health focuses on the eradication of illness through diagnosis and effective treatment. In contrast, the social model of health places emphasis on changes that can be made in society and in people's own lifestyles to make the population healthier. It defines illness from the point of view of the individual's functioning within their society rather than by monitoring for changes in biological or physiological signs. The main disadvantage of the medical model of health is that it ignores the soul spirit, so if a sinner keeps on sinning, the medical model of health will ignore his soul spirit, not realizing it's affecting his or her physical health, especially after a long time of being wrong on purpose, often hidden. The Wellness model of health is more of a concept that includes taking responsibility for your own health, creating a full and balanced lifestyle and being the best person you can be. In my choice of model I’m kind of stuck in between the two. If I had to definitely choose, I would go with the wellness model. As I stated earlier the concept of the...

...My comprehension of the profession of a social worker has been broadly expanded since being in this class. I’ve learned many aspects of this profession including learning of their goals and purposes, how it is empowering and evolving in society, also the values, ethics, and principles they conduct. The powerpoints have been really helpful even though I do have the book, the powerpoints organized me really well to study and prepare for any social work questions that were given. Although I know I am not absolutely fully knowledgeable about this field, I am aware of most things as of before, I had no clue as to what social work was about. Prior to entering this class, I had no experience with a social worker so actually conducting an interview...

...Interview of a Social Worker Stacey S. Bain University of Michigan Flint When I found out that we had to conduct and interview for this class and then write a paper about it, I was mad. I mean I really do not like having to go to someone I don’t know and ask the questions and not feel dumb while doing this. I have three people in my family who are social workers. You would think that it would be easy for me to find someone who I feel comfortable around to write a paper about. Well it wasn’t I must have asked a thousand times and then finally begged my Aunt Johnice to do the interview with me. Not to mention that I am a big procrastinator when it comes to writing papers. I am just not good at it. But I did it anyways. I went to my Aunt Johnice. She has a bachelor’s degree in Social work and works for the Department of Human services off of Clio and Pierson Road. Unfortunately the problem with trying to interview someone you are related to, is you tend to get off of topic. Several times I had to re-ask a question and then to no avail I was there for over Two hours and she only answered three questions. It was a big eye opener for me. Finally Johnice suggested I interview this brilliant man who works with her. She said he was the one to talk to and that he would be able to guide me in the right direction. His name is Dan Savoie (pronounced Savoy). He agreed to meet with me the following Wednesday. To say I was a bit nervous was an understatement...

...People usually interact with each other on a regular basis and this is the point where social work operates. Hopkins (1986, cited in Thompson and Thompson, 2016) refers to it as 'the space between people'. The social worker needs to be aware of what his or her impact on these 'space' and use own communication skills to regulate it Thompson and Thompson, 2016). For instance, one of the important processes of interacting with clients can be interviewing. This process provides an opportunity for information gathering, relationships building and plans for future actions. During my one day practice, I observed a social worker interviewing clients. ...Client's Name Course Name Instructor's Name xx September 2012 Reflection Frances Perkins involved herself in social works that advanced the interests and circumstances of women. During her studies, she went to various local factories where she took an interest in the issues of the workers, especially of the underprivileged workers. She fought for the rights and conditions of the poor ones by focusing and devoting herself into helping the poor and improving their quality of life. He worked to alleviate the health and welfare of the people. Harry Hopkins, like Young and Perkins, devoted himself to helping his needy fellowmen. ...There is this vein that throbs in my upper thigh. I am well aware of it. I wish I could cut it like they do when they cut down dead boy’s body after he hanged himself before having orange juice or black coffee and eggs. Randomly I will remember things that caused me great pain: (1) like when my childhood neighbor and their kids decided to tell every parent they knew that my brother molested me. They told me that they had a right to warn other children. What about me? When are my feelings considered? Fading into the background became essential to survival and now I don’t know how to peel myself out of the backdrop. (2) the social worker who became my interrogator; I was not a victim, but a confession. Life becomes so sad when I become just...
