To What Extent Do Men and Women Conform to Gender Stereotypes in a Relaxed Environment

Aims - To investigate the language use of men and women during a relaxed situation and a competitive situation.
- To compare my results and findings with the main gender research and theories carried out from linguists such as Jennifer Coates, Deborah Tannen and Pamela Fishman.

Hypothesis
- I predict that within my research I will find that women are in fact more dominant in conversation and men are therefore more unreceptive. I also predict that the women will be more direct and confrontational than the men especially in a competitive setting/environment.
- This is opposing the theories of gender stereotypes therefore hopefully making my findings a lot more interesting.

Methodology
The data I collected are two transcripts from two different situations but using the same two couples; in both couples there are a male and a female. The topic of discussion will be given without the knowledge of the participants that their speech will be recorded. Within the pub setting the topic will be about their everyday lives whereas at the parents evening it will be about their child's progress at school. The couples will not be aware of the investigation I am conducting nor will they be aware that they are being recorded. I want the couples to be unaware to reduce participants effects; when the participants subconsciously behave in a way they believe to be helping the experiment making it un-naturalistic. The couples will be informed after my investigation exactly what happened and I will then ask for their permission to use the data that I collected during this process.
Data set 1:
My first piece of data is set in a pub and is between two couples. Couple 1 consists of a male and a female; (M) and (N), and couple 2 also consists of a male and a female; (A) and (J). M and A are male, N and J are female.
Data set 2:
My second piece of data is set at a parents

This course is designed to provide you the foundations of organizational behavior whether you intend to work in any field of interest. Organizational behavior offers both challenges and opportunities for managers. It recognizes differences and helps managers to see the value of workforce diversity and practices that may need to be changed when managing in different countries. It can help improve quality and employee productivity by showing managers how to empower their people as well as how to design and implement change programs. It offers specific insights to improve a manager’s people skills. In times of rapid and ongoing change, faced by most managers today, OB can help managers cope in a world of “temporariness” and learn ways to stimulate innovation. Finally, OB can offer managers guidance in creating an ethically healthy work climate. Managers need to develop their interpersonal or people skills if they are going to be effective in their jobs. Organizational behavior (OB) is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within an organization, and then applies that knowledge to make organizations work...

...Chapter 1 SIGMUND FREUD AN INTRODUCTION Sigmund Freud, pioneer of Psychoanalysis, was born on 6th May 1856 in Freiberg to a middle class family. He was born as the eldest child to his father’s second wife. When Freud was four years old, his family shifted and settled in Vienna. Although Freud’s ambition from childhood was a career in law, he decided to enter the field of medicine. In 1873, at the age of seventeen, Freud enrolled in the university as a medical student. During his days in the university, he did his research on the Central Nervous System under the guidance of German physician `Ernst Wilhelm Von Brucke’. Freud received his medical degree in 1881and later in 1883 he began to work in Vienna General Hospital. Freud spent three years working in various departments of the hospital and in 1885 he left his post at the hospital to join the University of Vienna as a lecturer in Neuropathology. Following his appointment as a lecturer, he got the opportunity to work under French neurologist Jean Charcot at Salpetriere, the famous Paris hospital for nervous diseases. So far Freud’s work had been entirely concentrated on physical sciences but Charcot’s work, at that time, concentrated more on hysteria and hypnotism. Freud’s studies under Charcot, which centered largely on hysteria, influenced him greatly in channelising his interests to psychopathology. In 1886, Freud established his private practice in Vienna specializing in nervous diseases...
