In 1876 the presidential election was a contested election. There was a point in time that Democrats were thought to win to the election. The Republicans ended up winning the election but they made promises to the Democratic Party in order for them to win. The promises that were made ended up to be “The Compromise of 1877”. In 1876, there was a dispute between the Republican party and the southern Democrats that was resolved with this policy called The Compromise of 1877. The Compromise of 1877 was an unwritten, informal deal between the Democrats and Republicans. During this time, the presidential candidates were Samuel Tilden for the Democratic and Rutherford B. Hayes for the Republicans. The Democratic party agreed that Rutherford B. Hayes would become the next president for the exchange of the withdrawal of federal troops from the South and the granting of home rule in the South. The South did pledge that they would recognize the equality of all blacks and this promise was not kept. The South did not allow black men to vote and they introduced the Jim Crow Segregation which was the separation of the white and blacks. There were separate bathrooms, separate seating sections on train cars, and separate schools, etc. But some black men in the South were allowed to vote but they served in the government offices into the 1890’s. The Compromise of 1877 was known as the Great Betrayal. The Republican party assured civil rights for the African Americans but they were abandoned. The white populations in the South and North were more anxious to go back to restoring their way of life and wealth.
