...Negative effects of the Internet Julia Tucker Today’s teenagers use technology more than ever. Most of them have Internet access, which they use to send and receive email, instant messages, live chat, and more. Rarely do they stop to think about how harmful the Internet can be, such as exposure to pornography, identity theft, or cyber-bullying. Not only are they exposed to certain things but also the Internet affects a teenager’s social life, mental health and physical health. Over usage of the Internet can quickly lead to internet addiction, which will ultimately give them less time for them to study, do homework, read, exercise, or participate in any co curriculum activities. As a result, internet addiction directly affected their day to day’s lifestyle and characteristic whom some are suppose to be inside the classroom yet they are wasting time surfing the Internet, watching pornography, or playing online games in the cyber world. Today, due to popularity of social networking sites, teenagers are encouraged to post their profile on them because they want to be accepted by their peers. With putting up their profile, it helps them to meet and make friends with strangers. In turn, the stranger may be a predator who expose the teen to child pornography and encourage the teens to exchange pornography. In some cases the predator wants to go as far as to meet up with the teen. All this heavy use of Internet by teenagers can greatly affect their mental health. Some...

...Running Head: INTERNET AND TEENAGERS The Use of Internet Creates Adverse Influence on Teenagers Tabassum Akhter 13304131 Sec: 08 Course: English 102 Date of Submission: 14th August 2013 BRAC University The Use of Internet Creates Adverse Influence on Teenagers On Christmas Day, 1990, in a lab at Cern in Geneva, Switzerland, Tim Berners-Lee finished building the tools to create the World Wide Web (Krotoski, 2010). Twenty years ago, this act of releasing the technology for free had been a revolution. Twenty years later, this snowballing age cyber age – with Twitter, Facebook, Skype, YouTube, Google and a maze of other electronic avenues – has engulfed the lives of today’s youth, where playing out into the fields has been replaced by surfing over the internet. Researches show that 87% of the youth today go online, representing 21 million youth (Weiss, 2005). It has become a growing concern in the society, especially among the parents, about the cyberspace’s detrimental impacts upon the teenagers since it is concealed beneath the whitewashed faces of social media and other sites and generates addiction resulting in reduced efficiency of the students. Furthermore, it exposes them to the dangers of cyber bullying, and ruins the teenagers’ creativity and originality; not to mention, it also creates destructive impact upon family bonds. The creators of social media and other beguiling websites assert that the growth in the use of Internet is leading...

...The internet has a big power to influence what goes on in todays world, to connect one another in real time, and to mobilize the current generation with the help of recent technological advances that many people wouldn’t believe that would happen. But in today’s society, it has happened and the primary focus has been with the rise of social media. According to The Pew Research Center, “there has been an 356% increase of social media use in the United States alone since the rise of Facebook in 2006.” And including about “over 94% of social media use by people through the ages of 12-18 years of age.” Therefore is doubt that social media has been a godsent to young people who want to get in touch with others around the world who also share the same interests and want to know what is going on in their friends and families lives. Even with this upside there is still a downside because with these social media sites are greatly affecting today’s teenagers, in turn are making it a health concern for these teens to be on social media. Communication is key to any thing you do whether you are talking to a friend or speaking to your doctor on your latest test results. Real communication skills are what teenagers are lacking today. These social practices that you have been taught throughout your life seem to be missing in today's generation since eye to eye contact and having conversations without looking down on your phone are very rare to see today. Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair, a clinical...

...Just as someone with the flu has a weakened immune system, someone infected by technology has a weakened attention span. The people of today are constantly immersed in technology. Technological advancements are changing our lifestyles. The growth of technology has negatively influenced the social interactions of today's youth because it isolates individuals from reality, hinders communication, and perpetuates the concept of immediate satisfaction. Social media has had a major influence on society in the 21st century, enabling people to interact with each other in new and different ways. Many of the almost 1 billion users of Facebook and the millions who use Twitter, or blogs cannot imagine communicating without these tools. We have all seen teens freak out when their technology is taken away from them. Smartphones have became teens security blanket. That being so, there is a great impact of social media on relationships, among people. Traditionally, teenagers have learned how to build relationships with other people around their neighborhood or school, but because of social networking, real and hard-earned relationships are now replaced with online ones. Thus, teenagers are unable to develop crucial communication skills that they will need for situations later on in life, such as interviews for a job. They will decide to turn towards Facebook or Twitter, and antisocial tendencies tend to increase. How does social media contributes positively to these relationships? A lot of...

...Abstract Internet censorship is a control or suppression of publishing or accessing of information on the Internet. The Internet has become a “member” of almost every single family on our planet. It’s not just an ordinary member, but a very important one, especially too someone who spends a lot of time using the Internet. The Internet is a very useful tool that is used for everything such as advertisement, communication, shopping, researching and also for educational purpose. On the Internet, there’re some websites that needs to be censored in order to protect our children from viewing inappropriate websites that promote drug usage, violence and pornography. Parents and school officials are the first ones who need to begin the process of censoring out those inappropriate websites. The Internet is an easy way to access all sorts of information. Because the Internet has become so popular in such a short period of time, the opportunity to censor it has passed by almost as quickly as the public discovered its usefulness to our everyday lives. The Internet has some bad source of information that’s not helpful to our kids. Parents and schools officials are the ones who should start the process of censoring those websites that our kids view each and every day of their lives. Because they are ones who know what sorts of information on the Internet that is best for our kids. So that’s why, Internet censorship should be enacted to prevent teenagers from viewing inappropriate websites...

...observed that most of the students do feel that social networking sites have more positive impact on their academic performance. In another study conducted by Shana, (2012) it was revealed that students use social network mainly for making friends and chatting. The result showed that only 26 percent of the students indicated that they use social media for academic purpose. Young, (2006) in a study titled “The effect of internet use and social capital on the academic performance of students” observed that the internet expands its reach to teenagers’ school life. Young noted that students are more reliant on the internet to access information that is involved in school life as well as entertainment. The researcher further added that internet, though consumes time, and has less effect on studies. Yang (2003), notes the effect of social media depends large on the degree of usage. Yoon, (2000) observed that the type of social media or network subscribed to by a teenager exerts influence on him or her to visit the internet. Jeong, (2005) noted that internet addiction...

...The Effect of Modern Drugs on Today’s Youth Children and the Law Seminar It’s nearing finals time and students across campus are beginning to feel the anxiety with exams over the horizon. While many students hit the books to quash this feeling, others search for something more. Whispers soliciting a need for Adderall resonate throughout the halls. These students don’t have prescriptions for their drug of choice, but this doesn’t deter them. They know that the risk in purchasing and ingesting this “study buddy” is far outweighed by the extreme focus and potentially high exam scores it may bring. It’s not that these students are ignorant of the law; it is quite the contrary. These situations are now so commonplace that today’s youth perceives the law to be a technicality in their search to find a means to an end. This pervading attitude should come as no surprise to most adults. For as long as human history has been recorded, drugs have defined and reflected the attitudes of their era. In the 1920’s, alcohol was placed under prohibition and Americans were looking to every which way to circumvent this federal regulation. In the 1930’s, reefer madness swept the country and marijuana was criminalized. The 1960’s marked the era of a rising counter-culture fueled by the psychedelic drug LSD. Even the cocaine boom of the 1970’s and 1980’s define a period of American history marked by high crime rates and an evolving nightlife. Today’s society is no different. In many ways, people...

...that they should not do. With all this placed on my shoulders, my teenage years flew by so fast; I had no time to figure out who I was. In today’s society we all live in a fast pass world, including our children. With this in mind it takes both parents to work to get all the bills paid on time and be able to save for retirement. What this has created is teenagers are held responsible for their younger siblings and left home alone. With this much responsibility, teenagers are growing up to fast and have too much freedom. With this freedom come more problems. Teenagers today are finding ways to deal with these problems and escape from the responsibilities placed on their shoulders. Young people are looking for anything to escape the reality of these responsibilities. Even though street drug use is down, drugs are easy for children and teenagers to get even from their own home. With the problems that teens face today, such as maintaining grades, finals, not having any money, flunking, and pressure to be perfect teenagers are having a hard time. Anything can be a problem to teens today, from acne to stereotypes and to include parents. (“Teenage Problems”, n.d.). Along with these problems comes the desire to hide them to be more like adults. Street drugs are one way to hide them. Hiding these problems can create drug abuse and lead the teenager...
