TOEFL Secrets
Your Key to TOEFL Success

From the desk of Tom Paulson, Director of Test-Taking Strategy at TOEFL Secrets, May 5, 2002Dear future TOEFL Success Story: Congratulations on your purchase of the most advanced test-taking manual for the TOEFL. Notice I did not say study guide- there are plenty of decent study guides on the market, but that was not our objective in writing this manual. Our goal is to seek and exploit specific weaknesses in the TOEFL assessment, and then share those secrets with our customers. Let’s be perfectly honest here- you’ve worked hard enough in the past, and if you want to spend hours in a study guide to boost your score, that’s a great thing to do. In fact, we recommend at least a brief review of some of the better study guides on the market. But that’s simply not enough to do well in the high-pressure high-stakes environment of the test day. How well you do on this test will have a significant impact on your future- and we have the research and practical advice to help you execute on test day. The product you’re reading now is much more than a study guide- it is a tactical weapon designed to exploit weaknesses in the test itself, and help you avoid the most common errors students make when taking the TOEFL.

How to use this manual
We don’t want to waste your time. This manual is fast-paced and fluff-free. We suggest going through it a number of times, trying out its methods on a number of official practice tests. First, read through the manual completely to get a feel for the content and organization. Read the general success strategies first, and then proceed to

The First Time of Taking Toefl Exam

...The First Time of Taking TOEFL Test Outside the window, only a few houses still had their light on. The street lamps turned the glow color from white to yellow, a warm color that could pacify the anxiety of the passerby. I looked up at the sky. The dark blue sky extended to the boundless distant place, to the other side of the earth—America—the country where I wanted to go to school. To achieve this goal, I had to take two exams, the TOEFL and SAT. I took a deep breath, thinking about my TOEFL exam. Test Of English as Foreign Language, the first barricade I need to go through, now bothered me a lot. I was forced to practice it again and again, to make sure my score was good enough to apply the American universities. But my reading, listening, speaking and writing skills could not assist me to get an excellent grade. I knew it well. So I could not stay outside for a long period of time. I needed to come inside and begin my practice once more. “It’s time”. Dad sipped his hot tea, reminding me to continue my work. “Go do your work.” His gentle voice sounded like a ringing clock, low and deep but powerful, pushing me to obey his order. “Yes”. I responded, and turned on the computer to listen to the online TOEFL course. I attempted to note down all the key point the teacher said. She then started a listening practice. As the lecture began, I worked on taking note of the key words for the questions that would come out after the lecture. Hours later, after finishing...

结果: Acceptances: Chicago($$), UCLA($$), UCSD($$), Wisconsin($), PSU($$), UBC($$), USC($$) Rejections: Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Berkeley, Yale, Northwestern, Columbia, NYU, Caltech Waitlists...

Secret of Success

...THE SECRET OF SUCCESS Be aware and apply the Seven (7) habits of effective people • Be Proactive Take initiative in life by realizing that your decisions (and how they align with life's principles) are the primary determining factor for effectiveness in your life. Take responsibility for your choices and the consequences that follow. Begin with the End in Mind Self-discover and clarify your deeply important character values and life goals. Envision the ideal characteristics for each of your various roles and relationships in life. Put First Things First A manager must manage his own person. Personally. And managers should implement activities that aim to reach the second habit. Covey says that rule two is the mental creation; rule three is the physical creation. Think Win-Win Genuinely strive for mutually beneficial solutions or agreements in your relationships. Value and respect people by understanding a "win" for all is ultimately a better long-term resolution than if only one person in the situation had got his way. Synergize Combine the strengths of people through positive teamwork, so as to achieve goals no one person could have done alone. Sharpen the Saw Balance and renew your resources, energy, and health to create a sustainable, long-term, effective lifestyle. It primarily emphasizes exercise for physical renewal, prayer (meditation, yoga, etc.) and good reading for mental renewal. It also mentions service to society for spiritual renewal. • • • • • ...

Balance

...LaTonia Moore English 21 May 8, 2012 There are times when I feel so smart and productive until I’m exhausted, dehydrated overextended, overwhelmed, or otherwise ready to snap. There are still days when my instinct is to push myself to the limits for reasons I may or may not fully understand in the moment. Even though my body, mind, and spirit can take so much, I try to learn from these days as I go. Since I haven’t yet discovered the secret formula for complete balance, I’ve come up with a few simple ways to give my self a break when I’ve been pushing myself too hard. Since I like to run, I go to the gym, or I participate in some type of aerobics. By staying motivated, I can pace my self and not take on too much at one time. I allow myself a little extra sleep when I’m off of work. In order for me to recharge my self, I take long hot baths. It’s awfully hard to stress and over-think when you’re engaged in something fun and expressive. Even if it takes just five minutes, I take time to meditate throughout the day. I surround myself with positive and supportive people. Everything that I have accomplished in my life makes me feel good because I know I have worked hard to get where I am today, and I am very proud of my achievements. I have learned many things about myself through feed back from my friends, peers, and co- workers. I keep my emotions under control and I listen to what is being said. I am always open for change and...

David Bartholomae, and Anthony Petrosky. Boston: Bedford/ St. Martin’s, 2011. 712-713.Print. Crystal Lee “The Effects of Parental Alienation on Children” Belanger 1 In Susan Griffin’s essay, “Our Secret,’’ she talks about her secrets and she gives detailed insights into her life and ones of those that suffered through the Holocaust. The three biggest parts that she talks about is her own feelings, secrets and fears, her own experiences, the life of Heinrich Himmler, Leo, Helene, and Chief of the Nazi SS. The way that she organized her essay was very confusing and it would jump around a lot so you never really understood how everything would come together in the end. Griffin’s says “The DNA molecule is made of long, fine paired stands. These strands are helically coiled” (Griffin 379). Griffin’s tells what happens to the nucleus, and how the inner-workings of the nucleus develop into a cell which gives rise to many cells, which will eventually become an embryo. So the cell is how someone was made with and your development can be affecting you as you growing up. Baby is born with no secrets, innocent with arms wide open and then she is implying that at that point in a person’s life is the only point where...

...When Is It Acceptable to be Yourself? Have you ever felt alone? Just looking for something or somebody to be there for you when you need it most? What happens when nobody is there, forcing you to hold all of your feelings in? In “The Secret Society of Starving” by Mim Udovitch, young girls with severe eating disorders talk about the secret world of the online pro-anorexia (“pro-ana”) community, where they truly express themselves and sometimes even encourage each other’s problems. Likewise, in the essay “Can You Tell the Truth in a Small Town?”, writers struggle to put their true words down on paper, knowing the secrets they share could result in their excommunication from the only community they know, causing an even greater sense of being alone. Both “The Secret Society of Starving” and “Can You Tell the Truth in a Small Town?” shine a light on the different lifestyles of two separate societies and how they both hide who they really are from the rest of the world, causing a sense of growing isolation within the members of each group. The members of the communities from both essays hide their true feelings from the people closest to them, including their family and friends. From “The Secret Society of Starving”, members of the pro-ana community hide behind the internet and submerge themselves into a virtual world of chat rooms and blogs where they can (anonymously) state their true most personal feelings. On page 111 one pro-ana girl states, “they know exactly what I’m going...

Perseverance

...steady effort to maintain a course of action, belief, or purpose in spite of difficulty. In order to persevere, pain and a lot of hard thinking will be needed. Perseverance basically means to continue doing something in spite of obstacles. Success in life doesn't come easily. When a kid learns to stand up and tries to walk, he is found to fall down again and again. And by nature and instinct, he gets up, and again tries to step forward, although again he falls down. But ultimately, he succeeds in walking. The same thing had once happened with each one of us, when we were children. A person who perseveres has self-confidence, determination, and hardworking, that person tries again and again, and finally has success. Perseverance is the secret of success. Without it, achievements are not possible. A person who is very intelligent, and good at school, but is lethargic by nature, and reluctant to diligence, can hardly prosper in life, because he does not know how to use his brain and labor in the right direction. In this world, all the great things have been made or constructed only by perseverance. Shakespeare did not compose such voluminous works just in a day. He had to work hard during days and nights with tremendous perseverance to create such great masterpieces. The modern scientists, too, carry on their experiments day and night for years together in order to attain success. If one looks at his own life, he can very well understand that whatever he has so far gained,...

Children of Heaven

...the soundtrack played a vital part in shaping the whole experience of the viewer. It’s not just the music. It’s the strategic use of silence. It is called the sound of silence The cinematography and editorial pacing of Children of Heaven takes advantage of the full range of cinematic story-telling techniques, Such as tracking shots, pans, a wide range of camera framings, camera reversals, and point-of-view shots – FEW POINTS WORTH HIGHLIGHTING IN THE MOVIE: 1. the narrow alley in which we see the children running most of the time, projects the economic state of the community and the director’s insight to enhance the proximity of the situation and also the realistic projection of how many hardships the faced to keep the secret: running in dirty uneven lanes, with gutters, children playing, crowd moving about. 2. A director’s decision on what camera movement for what shot? The decision is a combination of Director’s POV i.e. what he wants to communicate or what does he want the audience to focus on and the audience tendency of observing things i.e how best can he leave an impact on them. The camera angles used in the alley where the main subjects dwell are done in a sense as if to convey the crunch for space each time and to enhance the proximity of the situation. Contrast to that, the usage of the long shots during the scene of the uptown highways and bridges shown to convey the expanse and create the stark difference of the two parts of the city audience...
