Tokenism: Cultural Competence In Children

Tokenism is a behaviour or attitude of putting the least effort in order to show that someone is cultural competence. For example, in the childcare centre. The service is displaying ethnical or cultural stuffs on the wall but none of the educators are being cultural competence. The stuffs are just there to show that the service is supporting cultural competence in the least way they can do. The cultural diversity and differences are not brought into every day practice in the centre. Tokenism can be avoided in an early childhood setting is by making sure that educators are practising the cultural competence in their teaching, programs and try to do it as much as they can so children can have knowledge and understanding of diversity of cultures.
