Tokugawa Ieyasu, the man responsible for the longest shongunate in Japan’s history, the Tokugawa shongunate. A man with such an accomplishment would only be talked from generation to generation as an example of a leader that drastically change Japans’ traditions and history. Ieyasu was one of three founders of the unified Japan, along side his former, Lord Oda Nobuga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Ieyasu achieved what most of his previous allies did not, a military regime so powerful and capable of uplifting Japan’s national spirit and traditions after the civil unrest and constant wars that once flew over this country. Tokugawa did what many of his allies did not accomplish during their ruling. This battle marked an end to the outgoing civil war in Japan. The bloodshed and the failed invasion of Korea gave Tokugawa’s an opportunity to finally put at end to an era marked by errors of his former lord. As for that reason, he established his shongunate, the Tokugawa shongunate. Tokugawa shongunate change the social structure of Japan, it converted to a feudal system like the European social and political structure. However, its governance was characterized by warrior bureaucracy . The shogun was the head of state of feudal Japan. Most of the decision making and control was command by Tokugawa, however, the emperor was still the absolute leader over Japan and it was always necessary to advise the emperor of any decision; the emperor wasn’t very much active in the shogun’s governance, which it made the emperor’s orders not important within Tokugawa’s system. Daimyos were territorial lords, they oversaw taxation, control, order and discipline of their lands and its citizens. During his governance and beyond, peace flourished over the tender wind for the first time in many years. However, this peace might be subjective due to the way ruled Japanese people. As his shongunate was increasing its power, the fear of discontent of some people raised concerns. Tokugawa was worried that one day his goverment was going to fall similarly to previous shongunate. This is the reason why he was implementing a rigid system that worked and tried to be progressive in Japans’ society. Another feared of Tokugawa was the influence of western merchants and Christianity. The Tokugawa Shongunate saw those issues as concerning for the equilibrium of its society, thus, Christianity was banned because it went against Japan’s religion ( Confucianism and neo – Confucianism) and as well, Japan isolated themselves from trading with other nations ( except china and the Dutch explores) due to fear of the western ideologies influencing Japanese way of life.
