In many works of literature, a character is changed due to certain events and realizations in their life. A dynamic character is one who, in literature or drama, undergoes a permanent change in the course of the plot. Tom Benecke a character in Jack Finney’s “Contents of a Dead Man’s Pockets”, is an example of a dynamic character. His personality in the beginning of the story differs his personality in the end; in fact it’s the complete opposite. Tom Benecke realizes that work isn’t everything in life, and that happiness is the root to success. Tom Bececke, a work-a-holic, chooses to stay home and finish his project for work rather than going out with his wife to watch a movie that both Tom and his wife want to watch. “I got to get this done” says Tom to his wife. “You work too much, though, Tom-and too hard” says Clare, to Tom who’s paying no attention. Tom is determined to get his project done fast so his boss can look over it over the weekend, and hopefully get a “promotion” very soon. “You won’t mind though, will you, when the money comes rolling in and I’m known as the boy wizard of wholesale”. This shows his greediness for money and how he wants to be popular at work. He abandons his wife for work even though Tom really wants to go. “It was not actually true that he had to work tonight though he really wanted to”. After Clare left to the movies, Tom, thinking that he’s going to get his project done tonight, looks over to the window to find out that his valuable project had flew out the narrow opening of the window. He rushed to the window and “he heaved on the window with all his strength and it shot open with a bang, the window weight rattling in the casing”; this shows how much his project means to him. Tom had opened the window within seconds; when on regular days he can’t even get it open slightly. Tom Benecke’s personality changes by the end of the story. He regrets not going to the movies with his wife, “smelling the perfume she had used he was tempted to go with her”. After Clare left to the movies, his project flew out the window of his eleventh story apartment, and he decided to go after it, thinking that it will take too long to redo. He’s frightened and scared. “His legs were cramped and muscles tightened, because he made a dangerous move to get his paper”. As he was stuck out on the ledge eleven stories high, his window slammed shut and wouldn’t open. “He had a sudden mental picture of his apartment on just the other side of the wall, warm, cheerful, incredibly spacious”, this is showing that Tom realizes that he is grateful of what he has and is happy and would do anything for his “small” apartment. Tom knew he made a mistake while he was stuck on the ledge of his window, “he wished, then, that he had not allowed his wife to go off by herself tonight - and on similar nights he had regretted working”. Tom came to his senses and as soon as he got in his apartment “he got his coat and hat and left to go find his wife”. Everyone’s personalities changes for better or worse. It all depends on the series of events that the character has been through. In this case, Tom Benecke changes for the better, he cares about his wife more than his work now. In life everyone changes and they realize what their personality was like before and after their change.

Music Review

...Aaron Karo 12/8/08 Professor Phipps Concert Review The Korean Percussion Ensemble was held in the Annette Recital Hall at the Center for the Arts. The director of the band was Soojin Kim Ritterling. The performance was called "Samulnori", which means "four things playing." These four things refer to the four instruments used in Nongak. The first song played by the Korean band was called "Tego Sori" by Soojin Kim Ritterling. The song started out with a bang as the bass drums were played. Then, other drums joined the bass drums. This combination of the two different drums playing together had a really good beat and rhythm. The beat started picking up pace after the two drums played together. The song sounded good as it changed it's speed, rhythm, and tempo quite often. The song ended just as it began, with very loud drums and a very quick pace. The next song was called "Yongnam Nongak." The song started off with gongs playing, and the rest of the band joined in, in sync with the gongs. They were all playing in unison and the song sounded good, as it had good range from higher pitched drums to lower pitched drums. As the song continued to play, I noticed that the bigger gong that was playing, controlled the beat and rhythm of the song. The song sounded as it if were a ceremonial song they played in their country. Then, the drums started picking up the pace of the song along with the gongs. The drums picked up the pace while hitting both sides...

Comparison of Folk and Rap

...John Denver, an American songwriter, once said, "Music does bring people together. It allows us to experience the same emotions. People everywhere are the same in heart and spirit. No matter what language we speak, what color we are, the form of our politics or the expression of our love and our faith, music proves: We are the same.” Folk and rap music are both very popular genres and each has a considerable amount of fans. Folk and rap music have been very popular for years and are both loved and respected all types of people. Music lovers everywhere find similarities and differences between their favorite genres, which help listeners everywhere realize that all types of music have the same motive: to express opinions about certain topics, proclaim their emotion, and entertain their listeners. Both rap and folk genres create a catchy rhythm to draw their listeners in and to keep them interested. Folk and raps are spoken word pieces and poetry set to a certain rhythm that makes a song exciting, likeable, and memorable. Catchy beats in a song help for the lyrics to flow smoothly, the fans to fall in love with and remember, and newcomers to become interested and involved. Raps and folk songs without rhythm or a beat wouldn’t be a piece of art at all, but a mess of words thrown together with no groove. Although the beats within rap and folk songs are very different, being that raps include beats made by a computer program, and folk beats are typically made with drums...

Huckleberry Finn

...Truth and Illusion in Huckleberry Finn In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain uses illusion and reality to probe the prejudices and preconceptions that dominate the way most people see the world, themselves, and other people. Huck has an adventurous mind that allows Twain to explore any idea without the shackles of common civility. In this way, Huck's ability to warp the world into an illusion of his own making eases the reader into a perspective that values truth over appearance. When the illusion of one truth is removed, the reader is struck by the ugliness of the world. One of the first examples of Huck's use of illusion occurs in chapter 8. Having faked his death to escape his father, Huck decides to live on a small island in the river. For the first few days, he feels marvelously free. He has plenty of food from the nature around him and he gets to smoke his pipe without anyone chastising him. The island has essentially become an Eden that protects him from the annoyances and threats of society. The dream of living free on the island, however, cannot last. After Huck joins forces with Jim, they realize that they must hide themselves from people who might visit the island. This is the first bit of reality poking its head into their paradise. When Jim and Huck find a houseboat that has been washed down the river, they also find the body of a dead man who has been shot in the back. They flee the scene, fearing the bad luck of encountering such a sight. Thus they are again reminded...

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Thomson Reuters Extel, on behalf of MICEX-RTS Exchange, has carried out a thorough analysis and assessment of English language Annual Reports & Accounts. From our extensive Extel interviews, benchmarking and rankings of investor relations worldwide, it is very evident that for both analysts and investors, the investment decision process involves considerable specific assessment of stocks, within a framework of how well these stocks may fit the overall investment horizons and asset allocation processes of any buyside firm. In undertaking the stock analysis, the fundamental for an investor is to develop the investment model, and from that to clearly define value drivers in a company, and then how well management expresses, endorses and embodies those value drivers. In undertaking this initial model-based assessment, the global data we have shows that over 70% of investors worldwide rely on Annual Report & Accounts from a company as the core dataset they use to construct these models, and the ongoing primary reference point to review and update their analysis. As such, the importance of the Annual Report & Accounts is...

Huck Finn

...Life is constantly testing one’s morality. Morals apply to personal character and showcase ones opinion of good and bad human actions. In the novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain, Huck is just a confused thirteen year old boy growing up in the racist American South. He is the son of an alcoholic and is often misunderstood. Those around Huck consider him to be immature, such as Ms. Watson who acts as a caretaker for Huck throughout his father’s absence. As a child, Huck is able to view the world differently than all the adults around him. His experiences throughout his adventures down the Mississippi river force him to question the things society has taught him. During this adventure, he tends to care more about the opinion of others than his own, however his opinion changes in time. Huck’s biggest test of morality is his relationship with Jim, the escaped slave of Ms. Watson. Huck has always been taught that slaves and those of color are below him just because he is white. This is an internal moral struggle for Huck, because he knows to society he is “wrong,” but to him their friendship makes it “right.” The concept of being wrong in the eyes of society and making it right goes beyond just Huck and Jim’s bond. The relationship that Jim and Huck develop over the course of the story is important because the experiences that they share teach Huck to think for himself, allowing him to trust his morals. Huck has grown up in an environment in which Jim...

Movie Critique

...from the lead actor Tom Cruise. STORYTELLING The story of Rain Man is presented in a way that keeps the viewer in the dark as the story develops; delivering surprises and plot twists along the way. Writers Barry Morrow and Ronald Bass provide an excellent framework for the actors to really shine in their portrayal of the two main characters: self centered, smooth street-smart Charlie Babbit and his institutionalized autistic savant older brother, Raymond Babbitt. We are introduced to Charlie at the start of the film and quickly understand that he is a successful import automobile broker and willing/able to do whatever is necessary to deliver his product- this even includes paying off EPA officials, if necessary. Charlie is unrelenting in his quest to accomplish his goal. When he finds out that his long estranged father has passed away, he is expecting to inherent a portion of his late father’s $3 million dollar estate; only to uncover that he has an autistic brother who has received all of the inheritance money from their late father, the irony is almost too much for Charlie. This is pure genius from a storytelling perspective as it helps to humanize Charlie. As important as the storytelling is, this film would never have reached it’s level of achievement without the powerful and stirring acting by Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. ACTING As stated in the introduction, I assert that the powerful and unpredictable acting exhibited by namely Tom Cruise, was essential...

Crusoe becomes joyful after years on the island, calling himself “the king.” Saving the life of a man that the cannibals have come to feast upon, he finds companionship. Naming him Friday, Crusoe takes responsibility for him, educates him but still considers him as a slave. Despite being accustomed to living on a plantation, he adapts to island life. When Crusoe returns later to the island, he finds that the island is an imperial colony governed by Spaniards. When mental toughness is challenged, adaptation to the environment with courage and happiness are the key to survival. * In Robinson Crusoe, Crusoe says “And now I have Difficulties to struggle with, too great for even Nature itself to support, and no Assistance, no Help, no Comfort, no Advice; then I cry’d out, Lord be my help, for I am in great Distress” (91). After Crusoe makes this statement, he becomes independent and figures out the ways of survival by surveying the island as he becomes healthier and starts to mark the days that he has been stranded. He learns that he cannot give up if he wants to see the light of another day. When people are put into a different environment then they are used to, they do not learn to adapt which leads them to an unsuccessful survival point. Change of life styles is the...

The Field Movie Review

...John B. Keene play of the same name much of the symbolism translates, however most of the character development fails to make the journey. The Field centers on “Bull” McCabe (Richard Harris), a man whose family has farmed a field for generations and intends to do the same for generations to come. This bearded and battered old man has little else to show for his efforts than the fertile soil he rents from a local, mysterious, widow. He continually offers her what little he has for the land to no avail and carries on tending to this land that isn’t his. Here the story could end - Bull would persist on and be happy, though his gruff exterior wouldn’t let on - and no play or movie would be required. But when a smooth American played by Tom Berenger comes on the scene with money to spend and intentions do so McCabe’s simple plans go enormously awry. The field goes on the market for public auction as the widow changes her tune from ‘I won’t sell’, to ‘I’ll sell to whomever, whenever as long as the price is right’. The combination of the auction and the American trigger turmoil and all the formerly contented townsfolk can’t keep to themselves. Meanwhile Bull and his son Tadgh (Sean Bean) decide to settle the score and keep their land. Bean, like Berenger, is given a character with little to sink his acting chops into. Thus begins a plethora of complaints that weigh on the scale opposite Harris’ epic performance. Thin characters are accepted, and almost expected, in...

Literature Essay

...Three Losers A loser is a person who fails frequently or is generally unsuccessful in life. In Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poems, three men are classified as losers in three different situations. The three protagonists of the poems are Miniver Cheevy, Richard Cory, and Mr. Flood. These three men, unable to cope with their problems or improve their situations, drown in a life of misery, sadness, and loneliness. They live an unhappy life but do nothing to make it or themselves better. In Robinson’s poem, Miniver Cheevy, a man is unhappy with the era he is living in. He wishes he lived in the time of warriors, swords, and medieval iron clothing. He thought he was born in the wrong time and called it fate. He describes his times as boring, where nothing adventurous happens, like in the old times. Unfortunately, Miniver Cheevy did nothing to improve his life and only kept dreaming of a fantasy life. He becomes a loser that only keeps dreaming, drinking, thinking and thinking but cared less about making his life worth living. He got drunk everyday only to keep imagining a fantasy life that would never become reality and weeping that he was ever born. But not everybody copes with the problems the same way. On another one of Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poems, a story of a wealthy, envied man is described. Richard Cory is the main character of the poem. He is extremely rich, educated, and gracious. His life seems perfect. Men envy him and women want to be with him. A greeting from...

...The RELIABLE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY has just made the winning bid of $5.4 million to construct a new plant for a major manufacturer. The manufacturer needs the plant to go into operation within a year. Therefore, the contract includes the following provisions: • A penalty of $300,000 if Reliable has not completed construction by the deadline 47 weeks from now. • To provide additional incentive for speedy construction, a bonus of $150,000 will be paid to Reliable if the plant is completed within 40 weeks. Reliable is assigning its best construction manager, David Perty, to this project to help ensure that it stays on schedule. He looks forward to the challenge of bringing the project in on schedule, and perhaps even finishing early. However, since he is doubtful that it will be feasible to finish within 40 weeks without incurring excessive costs, he has decided to focus his initial planning on meeting the deadline of 47 weeks. Mr. Perty will need to arrange for a number of crews to perform the various construction activities at different times. Table 10.1 shows his list of the various activities. The third column provides important additional information for coordinating the scheduling of the crews. Forest Gump

...to realize that there are many people among us that were born with various defects. That fact makes me think how fortunate I am to be totally healthy. The movie contains also a love story. It's a dramatic plot because Forrest loves a girl who doesn't think of him as a serious partner because of his defect. However they eventually get married. Although she passes away due to a fatal disease. Moreover we see love between mother and son where Forest's mom even slept with the school principal in order to give the son a chance of going to a normal school. All those things make me think of this movie as of a very moving story. We see very good performance by Tom Hanks and many other actors and actresses. The movie was awarded with eleven Academy Awards, which is a very good proof that it's a fabulous movie. As a result I consider Tom Hanks one of the best actors. As we've seen I have many reasons to think that this movie is the one I like the most. Great humor, moving scenes and a great performance by the actors and actresses are my main arguments....

The Corrupted Consumer in the Talented Mr. Ripley

...The role of commodities and consumerism in The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith is paramount in the development of the protagonist, Tom Ripley. The novel begins with Ripley in New York struggling to make ends meet without a socially acceptable job but rather an illegitimate occupation in which he swindled people who had no withholding taxes (artists, writers and freelance workers). Although Ripley is undeniably skillful at social manipulation, he lacks self-confidence and an established identity as a man. As a result of his insufficient cash inflows, the offer from Herbert Greenleaf (an all-expense paid for vacation to Europe in the hope that he can persuade his former acquaintance Dickie Greenleaf to return to New York City) will provide an excellent opportunity for him to live the lavish lifestyle that seemed natural to him and establish his own masculinity through materialist possessions and behaviors. The exceedingly low self-esteem of Tom Ripley (at the beginning of the novel) stems from his Aunt Dottie who constantly berates him verbally by saying that he is a “Sissy! He’s a sissy from the ground up. Just like his father.” (p. 40) Ripley was brought up in an unpleasant environment without a supporting family and a lack of material wealth. These factors contribute significantly to the insecure and self-loathing nature Tom Ripley possesses prior to European excursion. The meetings and conversations with Dickie Greenleaf’s father and mother illustrate the perks of...

Huck Finn

...intentions were. My position would be not to band the novel and to change the words, but to use the book to reference a land mark in American history for older student to learn. In depth, the book has a bigger meaning and valuable lesson to learn about history, life, humanity, morale, society, law system, race and religion. The novel was published in England in December 1884 and takes place forty to fifty years ago from when it was published. Evidently, this took place well before the civil war period and what was mostly disturbingly common in society during this era was slavery. The main characters in the Mark Twain’s novel are Huckleberry Finn, Jim and Tom Sawyer. Huck Finn is a thirteen year old boy who clearly came from a poor upbringing, with no education unlike his friend Tom Sawyer. He is also the narrator of the story. Tom sawyer is the same age as Huck, and is his best friend who leads Huck into a load of trouble. Jim is a runaway slave...
