Tom Buchanan
Supercilious is defined by the Webster Dictionary as coolly and patronizing arrogance. In the book The Great Gatsby Written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in the late 1920s, Tom Buchanan is a rich, arrogant, hypocritical bully. Tom treats people poorly and lacks friendliness and kindness, but never gets what he deserves for his actions. Toms superciliousness causes him to act immorally and feel threatened by the presence of others that could surpass him; without consequence he treats others indignantly.

He’s so dumb he doesn’t know he’s alive”(26). Tom is referring to George Wilson being Complacent of his surroundings. George has no idea that Tom is having an affair with Myrtle. Eventually, Catherine notices something is going on with Tom and Myrtle but she thinks it's a good thing. “Neither of them can stand the person they're married to” “Can't they” “Cant stand them” She looked at Myrtle and then at Tom. “What I say is, why go on living with them if they can't stand them? If I was them I’d get a divorce and get married to each other right away”(33). Catherine realizes that Tom and Myrtle are both cheating on their loved ones. But of course with Tom’s conceivable luck, Catherine believes Tom and Myrtle should divorce their loved ones and marry each other. Later on, Tom, Myrtle, Nick, Gatsby, and the Mckees go to a debauch in the New York apartments and everyone is drinking. At first, Tom did know there was something going on between Daisy and Gatsby, until the day everyone met up at the Buchanan's house to go to New York. “You always look so cool,” Daisy repeated. She had told Gatsby that she loved him, and Tom Buchanan saw. He was astounded (119). This is the first time that Tom has noticed Gatsby and Daisy had an affair. From here on out Tom tries to drag Daisy away from Gatsby as much as possible. For example, Tom brings up the idea to drive to New York. He is so Perturbed with Gatsby and Daisy’s affair he tries to split them up. “ Is it standard shift?” demanded Tom “Yes” “Well, you take my coupe and let me drive your car to town” (121). Tom noticed Daisy was amazed with everything Gatsby had, so Tom’s plan was to drive Gatsby’s car because Daisy liked it so much. Tom's plan didn’t workout for him, Daisy still went with Gatsby and Tom was stuck with Nick and Jordan in Gatsby’s car. As a result, Tom isn’t happy with everything that is going on with his wife. While at his house he confronts them both to tell them how he feels. “Self control!” repeated Tom incredulously “I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife.
