The tone of a story is described as what the author feels towards a topic. The tone of a story is often confused with the mood, which is what the reader feels about a topic. Tone can be created through imagery, facts, pronunciation, how characters interact, etc. In The Power of One, Bryce Courtenay allows the reader to explore his ideas and opinions. His writing shows a clear understanding of a character's thoughts. The tone that I discovered in the book is very negative. An example is what Peekay has experienced in his life. Many things have happened that have left him at downhills, "Grandpa Chook was dead, Hoppie had to go fight Adolf Hitler and maybe he would never come back again, Big Hettie was dead, and now my beloved nanny was gone. I laugh when he laughs and I cry when he cries. I think of the actions I would take if I were in his place. Considering Peekay has only been in the world for six short years, he handles the difficulties he is faced with fairly well, "'Pride is holding your head up when everyone around you has theirs bowed. Courage is what makes you do it', I repeated, my lips trembling" (124). Even though Peekay may be fearful in many situations, he always finds a way to show a sign of bravery and strength. When I was faced with a difficult situation at the age of six, as most six year olds would, I got mad and cried until the situation played itself out. Children are seen as beings who don't understand the world and things happening around them. As a society, we don't expect children to handle things with responsibility. Another example of a negative tone is that of which is directed towards Christianity. Christians appear to have the main goal of salvation of others for their personal benefit. Pit Botha was shown in a very negative light because of his lack of kindness towards Peekay and not wanting to help Big Hettie off of the
