Listening

...be taken note of. Also, an open mind is also considered- accept the ideas and opinions of the speaker. The receiver should also focus and concentrate in what is being said to be able to fully and correctly understand the message to be conveyed. Another requirement is the simple responses all throughout the listening process. Simply nodding and maintaining eye contact will give the speaker an easier way to let all his thoughts out. Avoiding distractions or barriers is also a help in having successful listening. Also affecting the listening process are non-verbal symbols like the volume, tone, pitch and intonation of the speaker. The body language, such as facial expressions and eye contact, can also affect the listening process, therefore should also be considered. Lastly, the most important thing is to listen to the message’s essence and meaning, understand it, and don’t just listen to the words coming out from the speaker. 2. Five listening barriers and its corresponding solutions: a. Distractions- The noise around and the different thoughts inside the receiver’s head will lessen the possibility of understanding the message being delivered. Improving focus and attention, being aware and paying more attention to the speaker will mitigate this issue. b. Culture and beliefs- Having strong conviction about points of view in life will affect the listening process, because the receiver will just stick to his own...

Workout Statistics

...Feel the burn Which workout is best for you? Andy Darling is your guide Saturday 15 January 2005 The Guardian 1: Jogging/running The simplest yet most effective exercise in terms of caloric expenditure, because it's an entirely weightbearing activity, requiring greater energy output than if you were seated or supported by water. Softer surfaces require harder work and result in still higher caloric expenditure. Great for fat burning, and for the cardiovascular system (heart and lungs). Not so good in terms of muscle toning and flexibility. Can cause too much stress on knee joints, particularly on uphill runs. Calories burned in 30 minutes: Approximately 340 jogging, 560+ running 2: Pilates Created in the mid-20th century by Joseph Pilates, it uses mat and machine work to develop body awareness. It also teaches you how to use muscles more efficiently, bringing together strength and flexibility, two factors that don't always sit easily together. Great for instilling a sense of "how to move" and to hold oneself . Not so good in terms of calories burned. Calories burned in 30 minutes: Approximately 140 3: Indoor rowing An integral training aid for the multi-medalling GB water rowing crews, the Concept2 ergometer - "erg" for short - has given rise to a sport in its own right, with competitions around the world. Some come to it because their days of weight-bearing activity (ie running) are over, others use it for cross-training, burning nearly as many calories as running...

Give Me Novicain

...Humanities; 2* 09/5/10 The song “Give Me Novocain” by the band Green Day reveals a sense of suffering, and the use of drugs to help ease pain. The chorus “Drain the pressure from the swelling / This sensation’s over whelming/ Give me a long kiss goodnight and everything will be alright/ Tell me Jimmy I won’t feel a thing/ So give me Novocain.” This bluntly shows that what ever point of view this is coming from that person is very clearly suffering and is using drugs as a way to escape from it. The beat of the drums and the guitar is slow at first, then changes to a more up beat tone, hinting at the drugs raging through a person’s system. The slower beat that the song returns to is the high. It’s the calm that a person feels when the are worry free. When I first heard this song I had no reason to believe it was about anything than what was being obviously sung about. But when I listened to the lyrics it revealed the suffering that we as humans go through and what some people will do to escape, even if only for a matter of hours. It made me think about all the times I wished I could escape from something as simple as my mother. I changed my way of dealing with things from then on. Instead of wishing I could just get away by any means possible, or punching walls, I would just think about everything I have that is worth staying for. Everything I did both in thought and in action changed slightly. I never thought about wanting to run away or get at my mom and instead of hitting...

Project 1

...Marshall Law 11 March 2016 Project #1: To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) Music in films before 1970 had a distinct purpose. In the film “To Kill a Mockingbird” the music highlights important material in the film. This music was utilized to enhance the emotion of the film. The musical score was under the direction of Elmer Bernstein, an outstanding musician responsible for many major film scores. This film was produced in 1962, just about the time where avant-garde music was well in effect. Elmer Bernstein implements these new techniques of dissonant harmonious, wide intervals and complex rhythms in his themes throughout the film. There are three points where he utilizes music in this film. He highlights characters, highlights transitions and highlights emotional scenes. Music is not played from beginning to end, as the music is accents key moments. There is no use of source music in this film, allowing all the music to be underscore. To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) is based off of the popular novel with the same name. The film follows the endeavors of two children, Scout and Jem, as well as their father, Atticus. Circulating the time of the Great Depression, this film emphasizes racial inequality. As the film develops, the plot reveals an important case dealing with the allegations of an African American man raping a white women. Tom Robinson, the man accused, is found guilty by the jury, only to suicide by cop. The man responsible for the allegations attacks Scout and Jem...

Figurative Language In The Veldt

Bradbury helps readers understand the setting and the intended time frame using extremely graphic figurative language and tone using diction. Figurative Language Describing Setting. Early in the story Bradbury uses figurative language when he talks about the veldtland and “the hot straw smell of lion grass, the cool green smell of the hidden lake, the great rusty smell of animals, [and] the smell of dust like a red paprika in the hot air” (Bradbury 1). This provides the reader with an exceptionally striking idea of the exact...

What Is Hayden's Word Choice

...Word choice is by far one of the most significant aspects that characterizes literature in general. However, in regards to poetry, “the choice and order of words”, known as diction, is especially paramount. Author Robert Hayden was fully aware of this fact. Consequently, he placed an exorbitant amount of effort into selecting the phrases he would employ in his works. A prime example of this, is his piece “Middle Passage” where his word choice has a particularly colossal impact (“Elements of Poetry”). For starters, Hayden’s main diction strategy is to take on the different personas of people involved with the Middle Passage. Each of these factions has their own highly specialized jargon. In the first section, Hayden tackles the religious aspect...

...to comment on the literary techniques that are used to portray a theme/idea in a certain way. This means analysing the stylistic language choices that the author made to establish a particular tone and present the theme(s)/idea(s) to impact the audience in a particular way. Heaven or Hell

...make the reader visualize pain and death in war – Hell, when everything appears lost and hopeless, and Heaven - heroic and victorious, when the obstacles are overcome and the “Draconic Empire” defeated. The story has a formal register to deliver suspense and the factual horrors of war. This has been achieved in a number of different ways, firstly, the complex sentence, “Sergeant Hugh Mott and his colleagues frantically worked away in the belly of the bridge whilst troops continued to traverse the spine.” This creates formality through its sophisticated structure coupled with a serious and impersonal tone. Standard English also creates formality with the active verb phrase, “With a resounding thud his body hit the cliff”. There is no slang or dialect which helps to develop the formal and complex tone intended. The use of lexis, with the polysyllabic words, also creates a formal tone. The verbs, “surging”, “paralysing”, “illuminated”, and the pre-modifying adjective, “terrifying” are all a formal use of lexis. The story also avoids abbreviations such as the pronoun and verb, “He had”, instead of “He’d” which is more informal. Heaven or Hell is targeted at a teenage male audience who become gripped by the powerful descriptions and breath-taking scenes of war. To appeal to this audience I have used semantics in the subordinate clause, “The thorns ripping into his flesh like splinters of glass.” This simile distinguishes that the audience is for young, teenage males because they love...
