...Research Essay Proposal Topic: Spice Girls and the normalizing spread of girl power Using Spice Girls as a point of study, I intend to research the spread in American popular culture of the ‘girl power’ phenomenon. It would discuss the nature of the idea (that female appearance and sensuality, and equality need not be mutually exclusive), how the concept relates to perceptions of gender roles and power through the lens of girl culture (for mainly the tween and teen groups) and the ways in which Spice Girls – as a major cultural phenomenon of the 1990s – promoted and normalized the idea. Depending on available information and depending on what the word count will allow, the essay will also look into the origins of the idea within pop (eg. Riot Grrrl, statements by Madonna, etc) and touch upon critiques of the supposed feminist aspects of the girl power movement, linking it to materialistic and consumerist norms of American and western culture. ...herself and a friend for a cup of cocoa. Following they talk about Jackie and love. In the story, a third person narrator appears, and it is seen from Ellen’s point of view. Ellen is a lesbian, and she had had a relationship with Jackie, who passed away about a year earlier. She is born on Valentine’s Day and she had become editor of the food section and had written a cookbook. At the time, when Jackie passed away, and Tobie were to live with her father, she was very sad. She did not get a chance to say goodbye to Jackie during the last rituals, because of the father, and that has made a deep wound inside of her. She does not feel like Tobie belongs to her – them - anymore, and she miss both of them very much. Now she has moved on a bit, and can look back and recall without too much pain, but there is many things about Tobie, that reminds her of Jackie and the past. Tobie is a girl with blond hair, which is cut short, and physically she looks like her father with the sharp, angular face. She looks like her mother in the warmth and quickness of her smile. She is a girl, who likes to have her own money, and she likes to have a cup of cocoa, which Ellen used to make for her, when she lived there. Besides that, she is the type of person, who never has had an abundance of friends, only special ones who were very close. Just like Ellen, she misses her mother. When she grows up, she wants to have a relationship as beautiful as what her...

...SOLUTION TO ORGANIZATION’S INFORMATION OVERLOAD Abstract Information overload has been an increasing problem not only at work but just life in general. Information overload is when we receive too much information more than what we can handle and be able to make the right decisions (http://www.ptg-global.com). As an example, I’d go to work and my email inbox would have at least 30 emails every day. Before finish reading the first one, more would come in. There’d be so much information coming in that I don’t know which one to do process first. I’d spend most of my time in the office receiving information and responding to them then I do anything outside the office, like go to lunch. Introduction An organization’s solution to its information overload rather it be social system or technical system all depends on its mission or customers (http://www.ptg-global.com). There is no right or wrong answer because not all organizations are the same. Analysis In the military, depending on your Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) the solution goes both ways too. In some MOS you would only need social system. For instance our cooks, they are more in to the social system. They cannot rely on the technical system to help them fulfill their responsibilities. They have to be the ones operating the equipment or tools in order for them to be able to prepare the food and have them ready and served for the Soldiers. In my MOS, an Automated Logistic Supply Specialist, we rely on...

...irrelevant content, busy background, and lacking basic organization information leaves a bad first impression. Another issue is a site not being regularly maintained and frustrating its users with out of date and missing information. Working links are helpful, but choosing a “click here option” that doesn’t open or leads to “page not found” can try a user’s patience. By the same token, having unwanted content in the form of outside ads or suggestion pop-ups during use can add to user annoyance. An additional website stumbling block is poorly formatted menu options and the absence of an internal search feature. Website users should be able to easily follow menu options to drill down to the level of information they need versus being hit with too much information upfront or complicated menu features that seem like a convoluted maze. Having a search option that throws a user outside of the website into a Google search versus searching internally can cause undue irritation. Information seekers come to a website looking for particular information, and if they wanted a generic web search they could easily accomplish that on their own. Finally an additional draw back that causes website user angst is the lack of easily found contact information. Some websites fail to make their contact information easy to find or purposefully leave it off and force their customers to use a “contact us” form or online...

...curiosity had the better of me. It was 19:30 and during the news report it was inevitable that the PM had to be mentioned. My daughter precipitously looked at me with a puzzle face and asked “Dad, what is a Prime Minister.” It took me sometimes before I could response; my daughter was only nine years old. I tried to explain that a Prime Minister is a leader of a group of individuals who takes decision for all people in a country and ensure people live in peace, harmony and gets all the need we require. My daughter looked at me and said “So you are the Prime Minister” Great thinking. Yes as a matter of fact I am the Prime Minister of my house; I ensure peace, harmony and get all the needs for my family. From there on it was much easier to carry on the explanation. I am the Prime Minster of my house and there is another Prime Minster of the country in which there are many, many houses. Simple understanding for a complex question. Progressively when we grow up we are surrounded with sophisticated and contemporary thinking. With the passage of time unknowingly we lose our creativity and simplicity. In our complicated world simplicity and creativity are exactly what we need most. That night when I kissed my daughter goodnight she told me “Dad you are the perfect Prime Minister, you look after us so well” That was a great compliment for a father. ---------------------------------- As a matter of fact...

...about technology. It has showed me that many times, we rely on technology too much. Dependence on technology erodes community. Online and offline, when it comes to computers, phones and other such devices, you have created the potential for major distraction and danger. Distraction in the sense that one can spend too much time or too much energy trying to better yourself (often against others) through the technology you have. If you are focusing on how to help others, not on how many more gigabytes you can download with a certain machine, you can be a society that prides practical support for each, over personal security in any virtual world. Danger in the sense that not everything you can encounter through technology is going to be of use to your well-being and/or, by extension, others. Take any of the pornography, alcohol or drug industries. Previously these had a much more limited influence. Now you can access them simply through a click. Community requires effort, and if you want your society to improve itself, it should have to put in an effort to help one another. Using these tools together, and not letting yourselves get sidetracked by their other purposes help you to be independent. You also want to stop society abusing itself because it can. Technological devices can be useful, but from a spiritual perspective, one has to take care of how they are used for everyone to benefit. We are getting too sucked in to the technical world. People today use technology for a lot more...

...I really want to know if speed is progress. However, a question is not always wind up with a right answer or a wrong answer. We all know that time flies. As an old saying goes, “Time flies like an arrow , and time lost never returns.” Our life time is limited, but things we can experience in the world is unlimited. Faster we are, more meaningful things we can try. So, In many people’s opinion, speed definitely is progress. In the article, author shared his experience teaching in a Brazil college. Student there go to class around half an hour late and leave the class around half an hour late too, which means they are being late to do next thing for one hour or more. Nowadays, our life is so wonderful but very challenging at the same time. As a college student in the US, if i dont finish my work on time, I am not gonna get good grades. And if I am procrastinated and spending too much time on one thing, I am not gonna have time to do other things ,like hanging out with friends, going to cinema, doing things I like, etc. We have to track ourself step by step to assure we are in a right way to our goal. You may notice those successful people around us. They have one common trait, which is they are good at manage their time. So top students in...

...when can I be free?! It’s 5:30 am and my phone is alarming me. “Five more minutes, please! I just got to sleep. I don’t think I’m going to work, I’m much too tired”, goes the thoughts that cloud my mind. It’s freezing in my room. I’m hoping that it didn’t snow overnight. Meanwhile, my snooze button has apparently failed me, blaring every, what seems to be, two minutes. “DAMNIT, I’m up!” I arise, sluggish. I stumble over clothes from the night before to turn on the lights. Here we go again. First things first, I walk to the bathroom, barefoot, and the tiles under me are artic, cramping my feet. I ignore the sensation, of course, and continue on with the start of my day. Great! Someone made a mess of the toothpaste, AGAIN. After finishing brushing my teeth, I run the shower water, run back to my room to undress, and grab a towel. By this time, I have realized that my comatose ways have gotten me backed up on time. “Ugh!, I complain to myself. Jumping into the shower, the water is still cold and my body begins to have spasms of pain. The water continues to warm while I indulge in such hot bliss, discounting all sense of time. After fully lathering my body with soap, rinsing and repeating, I step out of the shower. The cold air attacks my body once again. I scurry back to my room to dress, noticing that I have spent far too much time in...

...Carmen Caggiano MBA 642- Dr. Lynn Fish Assignment #2- H.C. Starck, Inc. Case 09/25/2012 1. Why are the lead times so long? 2.5 points There are many reasons to explain why the lead times at H.C. Starck, Inc. were so long. A variety of explanations can be made, in which all were mentioned by various members of the H.C. Starck, Inc. team or through inferences made by management. To begin, H.C. Starck, Inc. experienced lead times that were longer than expected because there was a belief that the manufacturing time was taking far too long, although no hard data was provided to support this. Also, Lee Sallade, who was the director of Operations for H.C. Starck, Inc., believed that although focusing on lead time was important, focusing on it solely would be a significant error in all aspects. He felt that in addition to controlling lead time that overall cycle time needed to be accounted for, as well, which may have also led to the lead times lasting for such an extended period of time. Lee emphasized that cycle time and inventory were very important to the company, but both were very difficult to control since H.C. Starck, Inc. held such a significant amount of tantalum inventory. Lastly, Lee felt that managing data was crucial to success, and he was concerned that many of the operational decisions of the company were based on myths or “hear say” and that, “rigorous data collection and analysis could help to break out of this mode of operation.” Another...

...as the case with this group. Knowing the different stages as well as the stage they are in now should lead Christine to have some kind of sit down with Mike by now. The fact that there is only one week left makes the decision Christine’s now. Sandra Thiel had frequently told them that if there were problems in the group, the members should make an effort to deal with them first. If the problems could not be resolved, she had said that they should come to her. Mike seemed so distant, despite the apparent camaraderie of the first meeting, but he only has one week now to complete something. If he were able to come up with something the whole group could agree has enough merit to justify including, then fine however, if the group feels that too much time has passed and that Mike had plenty of time but did not display any concern or commitment, then he’s officially “under the bus”. I have identified some primary and secondary problems the group is currently facing at this point of the process. For one the group seems to be just cruising along without the contribution of Mike and doing just fine. Mike has a commitment to this group and it’s for a grade which means Christine should have been reminding him of that during the time when he was blowing them off. I understand what...

...and perform tasks in diverse ways. I noticed that introverts tend to refresh by spending time alone. These people tend to lose energy from being around people for extended periods of time and mainly big crowds. If I had to take care of my employees that were introverts, I would make sure I perform my manners in a correct way. I would teach them new skills in a private setting, give them time and space, and I wouldn’t interrupt them. They have the tendency to think everything through before doing so. Likewise, in the video, it stated that introverts don’t necessarily like to be alone, they just prefer small group of friends. Therefore, extroverts develop energy from other people. In fact, they find their energy is weaker when they spend too much time alone. They revitalize this by being sociable. Extroverts, stated in the video, love to be around large crowds. If I were to handle my employees that were extroverts, I would respect their independence, compliment them, and allow them to explore their ideas and talk about thoughts. Taken as a whole, I would have to change my role when I’m managing introverts and extroverts. While watching the third video about perceivers and judgers, they tend to approach ideas in different aspects as well. ...Consumerism: Using coupons to save money Gina York ENG102 May 23, 2012 Sarah Giragosian Consumerism: Using coupons to save money Consumers face daily struggles. However, many would say that the one thing they struggle with the most is how to find ways to stretch their paycheck enough to cover the bills and put food on the table. In fact, despite having two paychecks coming in, the average American family is still unable to make ends meet. While we can eliminate some things from our daily lives, such as the $5 cup of coffee at the local “Java Joe’s”, we cannot eliminate our daily need for food and basic necessities. Consequently, with the continued downturn in the economy, people have had to become more creative in finding ways to save money. Using coupons to aid in discounting products is widely becoming the method of choice. Consumers have had to make some very hard decisions based on income and necessities. We have all had to “tighten our belts” and “watch our pennies”. “During these hard economic times, many people are looking for new ways to save money on as many things as possible. Groceries, electric and other utility bills, as well as on other items like diapers and baby care supplies, cleaning supplies and paper products.” (How to Save Money With Grocery Coupons, 1999-2012) Along with the ever present thought of saving and keeping our hard earned dollars in mind, many have returned to the days of our grandmothers, known for saving their pennies. We realize that...
