...In what ways are people and their experiences brought to life through distinctive voices? Distinctive voices allow responders to vicariously journey into the world of the speaker. These distinctive voices reflect their context through language of a unique individual whilst allowing insight into their psyche. The experience that we have of their lives is influenced through their persona, purpose and assumptions expressed in their language and voice. Marele's Day 1995 crime fiction novel “The Life and Crime of Harry Lavender” portray the life of its protagonist Claudia Valentine a female detective who challenges us with stereotypical gender assumptions and whose purpose is to solve a mystery, additionally the distinctive voice of the antagonist Harry Lavender allows the responder to experience his perspective of superiority over others and understand his purpose of constructing a legacy for himself through his memoirs. The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender both supports and subverts the traditionally male “hard boiled” detective through the inferential choices of language and a first person point of view presented by the female protagonist, Claudia Valentine who embodies a 1980's feminist values in the highly corrupted patriarchal context in which the novel in set. Claudia's distinctive voice is introduced by Day's attempt to manipulate the reader's inferences. ...Bryan Haskins 7/10/14 SDV.100 Even though it should, the fact that most of the top companies do not report workplace diversity doesn’t surprise me. The article, “Most corporations don’t share diversity data” was written by Sandra Guy and published in the New York Amsterdam News. Companies constantly stress the importance of bringing to the workplace, but when they are asked to be upfront with how much diversity that they have within their companies, they curl up in their shells like snails. Information on workplace diversity was collected from the Standard and Poor’s top 100 companies. Of the 100 companies, three of them dropped out of the race and 53 percent did not respond. According to Guy, in 2006, only 46 percent of corporations that participated in the conducted survey admitted that they failed to publicly report their equal employment opportunity data in full. Out of all of the 100 companies only six companies report full EEO statistics. This is a problem that this country has been fight for centuries. Prejudices and racism are 1a and 1b on list of top five problems of this country. This country has had to suffer some of the worst histories because of these issues, and yet it still continues to operate full of hatred and disparity. Women represent 47 percent of the workforce, and only 19 percent of them are in executive positions. Even worse than that only 27 percent of minorities are apart of the workforce and only 11 percent of them are executives in these companies...

...Best Workplace Tinda Reagan MGT 415 Instructor Laird Livingston March 3, 2014 Best Workplace Each year, since 1998, Fortune magazine has published a list of firms deemed the “100 Best Companies to Work for in America” based on their superior employer-employee relations. This relationship represents an intangible asset that may significantly influence future firm performance. In 2014, three of those companies consisted of Google, SAS, and the Boston Consulting Group. These three companies find motivational ways to boost employee motivation and foster group cohesiveness. Google holds the number one spot for best workplace and for good reason. Google currently employs over 42,000 employees (Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For, 2014). Google gives employees plenty of options when it comes to choosing a team from engineering design to sales operations. Whether building products, growing businesses or helping to keep Google going, we do cool stuff that matters (Google Teams and Roles, 2014). According to Lush (2012), the group is cohesive because members like and are attracted to one another. Some major sources include member similarity and member attractiveness. The more choices an employee has about where they are placed in a company the more motivated they become. When employees are motivated it will help foster group cohesiveness. The second spot for best workplace has been granted to SAS. SAS employs a little over 6,500 employees with a growth rate of 3.6%. We believe...

...Microsoft corporation I.history History Main articles: History of Microsoft and History of Microsoft Windows Paul Allen and Bill Gates (respectively) on October 19, 1981 in a sea of PCs after signing a pivotal contract. IBM called Microsoft in July 1980 inquiring about programming languages for its upcoming PC line;[1] after failed negotiations with another company, IBM gave Microsoft a contract to develop the OS for the new line of PCs.[2] Paul Allen and Bill Gates, childhood friends with a passion in computer programming, were seeking to make a successful business utilizing their shared skills. The January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics featured Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems's (MITS) Altair 8800 microcomputer. Allen noticed that they could program a BASIC interpreter for the device; after a call from Gates claiming to have a working interpreter, MITS requested a demonstration. Since they didn't actually have one, Allen worked on a simulator for the Altair while Gates developed the interpreter. Although they developed the interpreter on a simulator and not the actual device, the interpreter worked flawlessly when they demonstrated the interpreter to MITS in Albuquerque, New Mexico in March 1975; MITS agreed to distribute it, marketing it as Altair BASIC.[3] They officially established Microsoft on April 4, 1975, with Gates as the CEO.[4] In August 1977 the company formed an agreement with ASCII Magazine in Japan, resulting in its first international office...

...Best Work Places MGT415: Group Behavior In Organizations Best Work Places With millions of existing companies, and over half a million new businesses attempting to start and develop every year (SBA, 2012), it is no small feat to be recognized in Fortune Magazine’s annual list of the 100 best workplaces for employees. Since 1998, Fortune Magazine has compiled this list of exceptional companies by taking into consideration employer and employee relations, workplace environments and employee satisfaction. This year’s top spot belonged to Google, with Wegman’s Food Market coming in at the number 5 spot, and Dreamworks Animation just missing the top ten with a spot at number 12 (Fortune, 2013). For each of these companies, it is easy to see they set an exceptional example of fostering group cohesiveness and rely heavily on employee motivation. For another year, Google Inc. has clenched the top spot on the list of best workplaces by Fortune Magazine. With over thirty five thousand employees, Google has made it a top priority to foster its work environment to offer its employees a rewarding work experience. According to George Homan’s theory of exchange in groups, a group becomes more attractive to potential members by offering maximum rewards but at a minimal cost to the new member (Losh, 2012). Google knows “that every employee has something important to say, and that every employee is integral to our success. We provide individually-tailored compensation packages that...

...Business Ethics 2 Business ethics is certain behavior that a business follows when dealing with people in the business world. Many businesses have made a bad reputation for themselves because they are only interested in making money, an example of this would be the Enron case. Many of today’s top corporations have been fined a lot of money for unethical decisions. Ethical behavior in business improves the well-being of the individuals because it promotes things such as generosity, and compassion for each other and their customers. Ethical behavior among businesses can be enhanced when there are conferences between CEO’s of the organization and their employees talking about the standards of the organization. One way to find out if there is an understanding of ethical behavior is to ask employees if they understand the core values that make up the business. If they do not know them employees may unknowingly be practicing unethical behaviors that the company may not tolerate (2007, Nov 9). One out of every three major corporations offers some kind of ethical training which helps their employees to work through difficult situations. For example these programs will help employees to better understand and handle situations when they are confronted with a situation involving unethical behavior being exhibited by another employee. If companies do not have any of these programs they can expect unethical decisions to be made by their employees (White). In recent years companies...

McGhee Dr. Kimberly Anthony The Business Enterprise – BUS 508 Strayer University, Savannah Campus 30 October 2011 Diversification IBM a Fortune 500 company celebrated its 100th birthday this past June. IBM employs over 400,000 employees and is considered to be a $100 billion dollar or more giant in e-business global marketing technology. With the inception of the computer, IBM’s core business was mainframe computers, which almost bought the company to its knees in bankruptcy. IBM looked at the PC as just a gadget and with any gadget over time would fade into oblivion. IBM would find out the hard way that the PC would rapidly transform the world into the Information Age in the business arena and in that of our personal lives. IBM quickly moved into software, hardware and other services. IBM has been a Fortune 500 company since the 1970’s, and has survived, whereas over a-third of those in the Fortune 500 during that era have either merged, been acquired, sold in pieces, or just completely disappeared off the face of the earth. IBM launched an extensive e-business marketing campaign using its own initials Internet Business Machines during the 1990’s. IBM informed businesses that the Internet would be the new way to conduct business. By 1997 IBM had well over 10,000 e-business customers. IBM’s global e-business has expanded to Russia, China, Brazil and India. (Savov, 2011) Abercrombie...

They're covering tuition, and investing in safety, health and wellness. And they're building in fun and flexibility. Here are three Alberta companies that embody modern workforce thinking.MICRALYNE INC.A custom electronics components manufacturing firm, Micralyne is one of a mere handful that make microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) used by specialized instrument makers.MEMS components are so tiny that hundreds and hundreds fit on a chip the size of your fingertip. These components move when an electrical force is applied, and trigger an automobile's air bag release, for instance, or direct an overseas telephone call, explains says Jaya Gurjar, marketing and communications.A spinoff from a University of Alberta research facility, Micralyne thrives on new ideas and an open door policy."People are definitely appreciated by management," Gurjar says. "Within the company, there's room to grow."The company as a whole is growing, too, both in its physical plant in the Edmonton Research Park, and in the global marketplace where employees...

Their goal is to help people live healthier lives by creating nutritious foods, championing global food safety, education consumers about nutrition and fitness. Part of making this possible is sourcing. General Mills sources the raw materials used in their products. They hope that by 2020 they will source 100% of their top 10 priority ingredients. The environment is also of importance to General Mills. They strive to continually reduce their environmental footprint by improving the environmental performance of their operations. They have cut energy use by 10% and GHG emissions by 23% from 2005 to 2014. Also, since 2005, they have reduced their waste generation rate by 41%. 87% of all waste from their North American operations are recycled or reused. General Mills has decreased its fuel usage rates down 22%, another example of what it is doing to help the environment. A top priority in any company should be the workplace. ...what is good and what is bad, with moral duty and obligation. I feel that ethical leadership is important because it builds the foundation for others to believe in you as a leader and their willingness to follow. If you maintain this critical value, others will trust in you as you make tough decisions not only for yourself but the organization as a whole. “This sense of connectedness fosters trust, which leads to commitment, loyalty, and closer relationships with followers.” (Weiss, 2011) Without Ethics in leadership, every decision can be second-guessed and depending on the severity of the goal, lives could be ruined. With having good ethics, it has to be a central part of the workplace. However each year, there are half of U.S. employees witnessing unethical or illegal conduct in their workplaces. Many large corporate bankruptcies have...

...best company to work for? Dr. David Abramis has been researching and studying the topic for years now. “He’s discovered that people who have fun on the job are more creative, more productive, better decision-makers and get along better with co-workers. They also have fewer absentee, late, and sick days than people who aren’t having fun” (Rau-Foster, 2000). Explanation CNN Money has ranked Google as #1 for the “100 Best Companies to Work For” for 2013. Why is this? In 2006, Genentech a company that makes medicine that fights cancer, was ranked #1. Employee’s working for Genentech stated, “What’s better than being a valued member of a cancer-fighting team? Having a great time while you’re at work” (CNN Money, 2006). This company had a 5 percent turnover rate and 20 percent job growth. Now remember the year 2006! Google was on the bottom of this list in 2007. This leaves many people wondering how Google climbed its way up to the top. What research has found is that Google is a Silicone Valley Company that is now setting the standards on having fun in the workplace. They offer free meals, swimming, spas and free doctors onsite. They have three wellness centers and a group of other activities. Google has been ranked #1 four times. From the year of 2006 to 2012...

...Leadership can be described as the manner and approaches that leaders uses to direct, implement plans and motivate people. Basically, it describes how leaders react, interact and treat employees at work. According to Bass (2007, p. 1), leadership can be defined as “an interaction between two or more members of a group that often involves a structuring or restructuring of the situation and the perception and expectations of the members”. There are various leadership styles namely the autocratic, democratic, laissez faire and charismatic. Basically leaders tend to use all these leadership styles depending on the situations; however, one of the styles is always the predominant on them. It has to be noted that a particular leadership style will not be effective in an organisational setting. Hence, different styles are needed according to different situations. Steve Jobs CEO of Apple has been a successful leader in this modern era. His approach to leadership is both fascinating and confusing and that is the reason why he has been able to make Apple a successful company. He has brought a lot of changes in the life of people through his greatest advanced technology ever made namely the Mac, the iPod, the iPad and iPhone but has also introduced a new concept for business and leadership. His approach to creative leadership was remarkably high, that is inspiring others to do the impossible but at the same time Steve Job’s leadership style was complex because he always put a...
