...How do the most successful companies use social media? By Nora Ganim Barnes 8 Spring 2010 Tweeting and blogging to the top The Center for Marketing Research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, under the direction of researchers Barnes and Mattson, recently conducted a new in-depth and statistically significant study on the usage of social media in fast-growing corporations. This new study revisits the Center’s study of Inc. 500 social media usage for the third consecutive year, making it a valuable and rare longitudinal study of corporate use of these new technologies. (For a complete list and executive summaries see www.umassd.edu/cmr.) The new study compares adoption of social media over the last three years (2007, 2008 and 2009) by the Inc. 500, a list of the fastestgrowing private U.S. companies compiled annually by Inc. magazine. The 2009 Inc. 500 list was released in the September issue of Inc. magazine. In this third iteration, 30 percent (148) of the Inc. 500 participated. The companies include five of the top 10, 12 of the top 25 and 38 of the top 100 companies from the Inc. 500 list. All interviews were conducted with the chief marketing officer or other marketing professional at each company. Questions probed respondents about their familiarity with six prominent social media tools (blogging, podcasting, online video, social networking, message boards and wikis). This included the popular micro blogging service Twitter and other popular social networking...

...number of corporations adopting LGBT-related workplace policies. In 1999, 72% of Fortune 500 companies included sexual orientation in their non-discrimination policies, and only a handful included gender identity.1 By 2009, 87% of such companies included sexual orientation and 41% included gender identity in their non-discrimination policies.2 Over the same time period, the percentage of Fortune 500 companies offering domestic partner benefits increased from 14% to 59%.3 This study reviews statements issued when adopting such policies by the top 50 Fortune 500 companies and the top 50 federal government contractors. Since companies began to adopt these policies, and state and local governments began to amend their laws to prohibit sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination, arguments have been made that the requirements are costly and burdensome for private businesses. As recently as May 2011, the Tennessee legislature repealed an ordinance passed by the city of Nashville requiring city contractors to include sexual orientation and gender identity in their non-discrimination policies.4 The Tennessee Chamber of Commerce initially supported the state bill, stating that “employment standards…should not create an additional burden on companies that are endeavoring to become competitive”.5 The Chamber later withdrew its support.6 In contrast to these arguments, many private companies have supported these policies for the opposite reason—because they make good business sense...

...Womenin Top Management: WhatWeKnowThus Far Perhaps the most widely quoted source of data on women in executive rank is the Catalyst bi-annual Census of Women Corporate Officers and Top Earners. Catalyst collects data on women who are corporate officers in the Fortune 500 companies from publicly available company reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and to stockholders, and then asks each company to verify these data. As part of the verification process, companies can add female corporate officers that do not appear in official company filings or annual reports to stockholders.3 Catalyst also asks the companies to verify the functional area responsibilities of the executives. Based on these data, Catalyst reports the number and percentage of officers who are women.4 Academic studies also have examined the representation of women in top management, often focusing on Fortune 500 companies (for a review, see Powell 1999). The data in the Catalyst reports and other studies show a growing proportion of women in top management in recent years. Most estimates of women in top management in the 1970s through 1990 ranged from zero to 3 percent (Powell 1999). The percentages reported by Catalyst for the Fortune 500 companies in the second half of the 1990s were much higher: 8.8 percent in 1995, 11.2 percent in 1998, 12.5 percent in 2000, and 15.7 percent in 2002 (Catalyst 1998, 2002). Hillman, et al. (2005) also found that 7.34 percent of...

Since the price is greater than the marginal cost at Q1 the second consultant is also correct in saying that the increase in production will more than cover the costs incurred. Hence taking the advice of second consultant seems more practical as it will lead to profits once if the production is increased up to a point (Q3) where the price equals marginal cost. ...century to give woman the same opportunity’s as men, I will argue that we still live in a country that discriminates on the basis of ones gender. One of the most common offenders of sexism is the American workplace. The Mad Men era of ass grabbing and over the top sexual harassment may be over, but sexism in the workplace is still very much alive. There is an enormous lack of females in high-level management positions, a wage gap that shows women make less then men in comparable jobs, and women are more often then not subjected to more cases of sexual harassment. In a country that prides itself for its belief that everyone is equal, the facts about sexism tell a completely different story. The Facts One of the most unknown problems in regards to sexism in the workplace has to do with the gap between how much women earn compared to men. Women make up just fewer than 50 percent of the labor force in the United States, yet there is still a large gap in the wages between men and women. Women’s median earnings are lower than men’s in nearly all occupations, whether they work in occupations predominantly done by women, occupations predominantly done by men, or occupations with a more even mix of men and women. Not surprisingly, the top 20 occupations that are mostly done by men have one of the...
