The tolerance for men and women was at its lowest level after Great Britains participation in the French and Indian War. At this point, Great Britain had a large amount of debt owed to the East India Company. They needed a way to reduce their debt so they imposed many taxation acts onto the Colonies. One of the significant acts was the Townshend Acts in 1767. This specific act placed taxes on imported materials such as glass, paper, lead, paint, and most importantly, tea.
