...cigarette smoking. Modifiable risks are strongly associated with habit and lifestyle. In this article we will focus to discuss about correlation between smoking habit and prevalence of ischemic stroke. It has known that cigarette smokes contain thousands toxic chemicals, including nicotine, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, and so on. These chemicals cause dangerous effects to cells and tissues in the body. Some of those contribute in formation of blood clots in the blood vessel by increasing platelet adhesiveness. Thus, results in increased blood viscosity, blockage of the blood flows, and reduced blood flows. If the blockage is formed in artery to the brain, it will deprive oxygen and glucose supply to the brain, which may lead to the death of neuronal...

Hyperlipidemia was induced by passive smoking in a closed chamber having 1 burning ciggrette inside it. The hypolipidemic activity was analysed by reading the blood serum level in UV at 505 nm after treated with reagent present in auto span diagnostic kit. Dose of Methanolic extracts of QI had been prepared by using distilled water i.e. 200 mg/kg p.o. Methanolic extracts of QI significantly reduce the harmful lipid layer in blood serum at varying concentration and dose dependent manner which shows that the plant carries the hypolipidemic properties. It reduces the LDL, VLDL, cholesterol, triglyceride and raise HDL level in blood serum upto certain extent which was may be due to the inhibition of lipid peroxidation as the plants...

... What I Already Know “You don't have to be a smoker for smoking to harm you.” This was my first introduction to secondhand smoking when my teacher in high school told me once about the topic. As I was listening, I was astonished when I heard the health problems I will get from breathing in other people's smoke. It is said that non-smokers who breathe in secondhand smoke take in nicotine and other toxic chemicals just like smokers do. It’s surprisingly unbelievable, that the health risks I would get from secondhand smoke are the same with the actual smokers. Some say it’s even harmful for the secondhand smokers than the actual ones. Smokers are everywhere. Indeed, I have friends who smoke. Everytime I'm with them, I want to tell them to stop smoking since I know it's not only their health that are being put at risk. They told me it's hard to stop smoking once you've started doing it. I'm bit curious about their answers. Is it that hard? I wonder if they care about the people around them who's affected by their wrongdoings. And as a non smoker, I’ve been exposed to other people’s cigarette smoke at many times. I feel a little of anger to smokers because I can still remember the words of my teacher. Knowing that my health is at risk just because of other people wrongdoings is alarming. As I want myself to stop them to smoke, I just can’t. It’s ironic how I seem to be ashamed to ask smokers to stop smoking in front of me, when in fact it is my health that is being put...

Speech on Smoking

...health problems caused by smoking? According to a study made by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2011, more deaths are caused each year by tobacco use rather than by HIV, Illegal drug use, alcohol use, suicides, and murders. On a report based on the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco consumption kills 10 Americans every hour, that’s 240 per day and nearly 87,600 each year, due to cancer, stroke, lungs and heart diseases brought on by cigarette smoking. I had never been interested in researching the effects of smoking until I went through a very personal experience. I myself was a smoker and didn’t realize the damage I was doing to my body. Once you are more informed about the damage smoking causes, if you have a loved one that smokes, you can inform them so that they can reflect and make better decisions. With these given statistics, why would anyone choose to expose themselves to the possible side effects? I have been with my father in the hospital for the past two weeks. He started smoking when he was six years old and quit 10 years ago. Although he stopped smoking, it was too late since the damage had already been done. He started using inhalers and a lot more medications for different things, such as high blood pressure and poor circulation. In the last few months he started using oxygen, and two weeks ago one if his lungs collapsed. Today I will be discussing the potential health problems and diseases cigarettes cause, what toxic substances cigarettes...

Smoking

...Smoking For several decades, smoking remains one of the most common problems in the world even though people are aware of the health risks involved in smoking. Smoking causes harmful effects in the body. There have been numerous reports linking cigarette smoking to diseases such as cancers of the lung, mouth, heart attacks, and other ailments. Moreover, smoking in public areas is an unhealthy habit because it harms not just the smokers, but also others who breathe the smoker’s cigarette smoke, that called secondhand smoke or passive smoke. Most studies of the effects of smoking focus on the public health aspects. However, smoking also negatively impacts on society through environmental problems and economic problems. Therefore, Federal and State Government should ban smoking in public area. When thinking of disease caused by smoking, the first one that comes to mind is always lung cancer, but there are many other serious diseases that are associated with smoking. Smoking damages nearly every organ of the body and diminishes a person’s overall health. Most of the substances contained in tobacco smoke are harmful to the body such as: tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide. They are the major cause of cancer as well as the heart attack, stroke and peripheral arterial disease. Actually, in 2010, the Surgeon General at U.S Department reported that: “Smoking is a leading cause of cancer and death from cancer. Are E-Cigarettes Good Or Bad

...While e-cigarettes claim to be safer than traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes pose a considerable health risk to users. New studies show that e-cigarettes “deliver a cocktail of toxic chemicals into the lungs” In addition, a recent article published in Science American stated that “e-cigarettes contain several cancer-causing substances, as well as incredibly tiny particles of tin, nickel, and heavy metals” which can cause damage to the lungs. Although e-cigarettes do not have the toxic chemical reaction that occurs when tobacco and fillers are burned, a puff on an e-cigarette is still toxic. The substances found in e-cigarettes can lead to, or aggravate, asthma, bronchitis, and...

Position Paper: Smoke Free Legislation. Uta Engl 1302

...smoky environment, a child in a smoke filled car, for example, would be trapped with no hope or realistic ability to escape the situation. Smoke free citizens have pressed legislators for years to make their work and public environments smoke free. Smoking cigarettes is now illegal in government buildings, and many bars and restaurants nationwide and yet only six states have laws making it illegal to smoke in a car with a minor present. Shouldn’t minors be afforded the same liberties we adults demand for ourselves? I have struggled in my opinion on smoke free legislation for some time now. As a libertarian who appreciates the least government involvement possible, I support the freedom we have to smoke in bars and casinos in Las Vegas. These are adult only environments and as adults we have the choice to engage in the lawful behaviors we see fit. However, as a pediatric nurse who witnesses childen suffering from passive smoking, I can confidently state that parents, healthcare workers, and anyone in support of protecting children, smokers included, need to be in support of this legislation. A few of the things I believe this legislation would do if passed nationwide would be to: increase awareness of the harm of passive smoking to children, decrease children’s incidences of...

A Public Assassin

...A habit, a trend, or a public danger? Smoking has been recognized around the world as one of the leading causes of cancer. This is not only limited to smokers; smoking also affects the people around the smoke. Second hand smoke is just as toxic as smoking itself. It causes thousands of deaths every year. This is why smoking cigarettes and cigars should be banned in public areas. Smoking is one of the greatest causes of cancer and other deadly diseases. People who smoke are at greater risk of dying early in life than others who do not smoke. The risk of disease increases the more you smoke throughout your life. Some of the diseases you can acquire from smoking cigarettes are anywhere from lung cancer and lip cancer to cancer of the throat and mouth and most other organs in your body. Smoking also causes problems such as bad breath, difficulty breathing, wrinkling of the skin, and stained yellow teeth, amongst other things. Second hand smoke is very dangerous and can also cause the same diseases as actually smoking a cigarette. The effect that smoking has on others is called “passive smoking.’ Children and infants who are exposed to tobacco smoke are usually prone to more colds, ear infections and are more likely to develop asthma. It can also cause SIDS in infants. Second hand smoke is thought to have an effect on children’s learning development and behavior as well. ...of Others Stephen E. Smith IRN 9047136049 COM/150 02/10/2013 Tracey Fida Smoking cigarettes is a habit many people have these days, and fortunately those numbers are going down. If compared with the 1940’s, the number of smokers had a huge decrease nowadays. Mendes  (2011), “Gallup and Healthways find the national smoking rate stuck at 21%. Although this is much lower than the historic highs of around 40%, Gallup found from the mid-1940s to the mid-1970s, there remains significant variation across states, with smoking levels in many states still at 25% or higher. The number of Americans who smoke has fallen to 20 percent, tying the all-time low first recorded in 2009.” (8). However, the health problems it brings to the smokers and their surroundings still a big concern and something people need to learn more about. Unfortunately, what some non-smoker does not realize is how bad that smoke is for them as it is for the smoker, the reason they are known as involuntary or passive smokers once they are breathing in the second hand smoke taking in the nicotine and toxic chemicals the same way smokers do. When a non-smoker sees somebody smoking a cigarette the first thing that crosses their minds is how bad that habit is, not juts because the harmful effects it causes to the smoker's health, but the odor impregnated in the clothes, the bad breath, and the smoke exhaled.
