Good Cop Gone Bad
In the movie Training Day, one sees the story of trainee officer Jake Hoyt getting the chance to join an elite narcotics unit in the Los Angeles police department. As Hoyt’s training day progresses, Alonzo Harris, the unit’s commanding officer, introduces Hoyt to the world of corrupt police officers. Through Akers’ and Burgess’ social learning theory, one can see that Hoyt succumbs to the lifestyle of being a corrupt police officer. According to the social learning theory, the people whom one interacts with the most influence the way a person acts and how they view the world. Using a fake warrant, Harris gains entry into Sandman’s home and steals the drug money stashed there. Just before they are about to leave, Sandman’s wife notices the warrant is fake and calls out to the nearby Crips to get Harris and Hoyt. Luckily, the duo escapes along with Hoyt objecting to Harris’ actions once again.
Afterwards, Harris and Hoyt meet up with some high-ranking police officials known as the three wise men. The three wise men address the fact that Harris owes the Russian mob money and advise him to leave town. In response, Harris tells them he has everything in control and exchanges the money they obtained from Sandman’s home for a warrant.
With the warrant they just obtained from the three wise men, Harris and Hoyt along with three other narcotic officers go to Roger’s house. At the house, they steal millions of dollars in drug money where everybody takes a cut except Hoyt who refuses. Upon Hoyt’s refusal, Harris shoots Roger and arranges the place to look like a justified shooting. Of course still being the good police officer that he is, Hoyt refuses to lie for Harris. After being threatened to listen to what Harris says, Hoyt grabs Harris’ shotgun, which in turn causes everybody to point their guns at each other.
