In this paper I will identify and explain the leadership concepts that I learned in this class using characters from the film Finding Nemo. To do so, I will provide examples of transformative leadership and describe the impact it had on others. I will also explain how the characters acquired their leadership effectiveness by identifying experiences that were instrumental in their leadership development.
Transformative Leaders The three characters in the movie Finding Nemo that displayed transformative leadership are Marlin, Dory and Gill. Marlin goes on a journey to find his lost son Nemo. All she wants to do is be a good friend to him. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Marlin is determined to find his son and is completely oblivious to Dory’s feelings. Of course, by the end of the film, Marlin the clown fish realizes he hasn’t been sensitive to Dory, but it takes him almost the whole journey to discover that truth.
Thriving amidst Chaos Dory is very calm and collected, she always thinks positively and thrives amidst chaos. Dory’s short term memory loss allows her to focus on the long term goal of finding Nemo. Dory always keeps Marlin calm by telling him to “just keep swimming” whenever he is afraid and by reminding him that he can trust her. Without Dory’s calm behavior, I do not think that Marlin would have even been able to make the journey to find Nemo.

As a result of her short term memory loss she is able to live in the moment. Marlin learns to be comfortable with ambiguity only after he finds Nemo. In the beginning of the movie, Marlin is closed off from the rest of the world and rarely ventures outside of this home. When Nemo wants to go to school, Marlin feels very uncomfortable and wants him stay home for another couple of years. When Nemo’s class is going on a field trip Marlin shows a little comfort with Nemo leaving until he learns where the class is going. The idea of Nemo heading out into the ocean makes Marlin very uncomfortable and he chases after Nemo. Had Marlin not chased after Nemo he never would have been captured and the journey to find him would not have taken place.
Working for a Common Purpose When Marlin met Dory, they began working for a common purpose. Marlin was searching for a boat and Dory helped him find it. Dory often forgot that she was helping Marlin find Nemo and often questioned while Marlin was following her. Dory continues to help Marlin because she feels a connection with him and she realizes that she remembers more when Marlin is around and wants to help find Nemo. At the end of the movie when Marlin leaves, Dory is very lost. When Nemo swims by and even though she cannot remember who he is, she joins him on his journey to find Marlin and they too work toward a common purpose.
