Being raised partly in the North, “guys” is my ya’ll.” With that being said I will make a conscious effort to use appropriate pronouns when speaking to my students, as I want all of them to feel included. After observing the way English as second language students were treated at a typical school, I can not endorse English as a Second Language programs as they are typically practiced. While these programs appear to make sense and be the best option to assist in a difficult transistion, they have flaws. When these students are being pulled out of class they are missing other important content from their classes, thus being left even further behind. The solution that the school I observed had to remedy this was to have students come to school early for their ESL classes. This sounds wonderful in theory, but how are all these students expected to make it to these classes. Most parents work early in the morning and rely on the school buses to get their students to school, they cannot afford to take their children to school earlier.
