Transportation
Transporting an product can be a quite daunting and expensive task if you do not know the best mode for moving it. There are five specific ways of transporting a product from one destination to the other. The most common used are by truck, rail, pipeline, air, and water. There are also different forms of multiple modes that could involve rail to truck. All of these can range from a very cheap and fast shipment or expensive and slow depending on what specifically suits each scenario. In this particular case I chose a Samsung Dryer that retails for $599 on most online shopping sites. It will be traveling from my home in Bedford, Indiana to my girlfriend’s residence in Evansville, Indiana. A total of 105 miles. The most unlikely mode of transportation for this specific item would definitely be pipeline. Obviously you cannot break it down into individual components, send it down a pipe, and magically reassemble into its original condition. Pipeline is usually used as a way to easily transport oil, natural gas, or water. Not very often would use see large, solid objects floating down a pipe. One day it may be possible to ship large objects this way by bringing to life the ideas of the great Willy Wonka. The next on the list of not so likely would be water shipment by boat. Here in Bedford the closest river is the White River. While it is a decent size and may be accessible for a boat, it is not commonly used for this service. If it was available for transportation or freight, it would have to travel down to the Ohio River in Evansville and then be transferred to a truck. This may have been an option if shipping lines were used and if the conditions were able to handle a smaller shipment vessel. There is also no large river or ocean nearby, so it would not make much sense to go this route. Air is a better option than pipeline or water, but with this situation is not the smartest decision financially or if you want to be fast and efficient. It is definitely feasible, but the price would be astronomical. There is an airport in Evansville, but not a large enough airport in Bedford to handle a large plane that would take care of the shipment. The only option would be to hire a truck that would bring the dryer from Bedford to the Indianapolis International Airport, fly to Evansville airport and have a truck pick it up to take it the residence. The cost would be much greater than what the dryer even costs. This could be a good example of using multiple modes of transportation, but it just is not cost effective. Now we are getting to the more feasible options! The next on the list is shipment by rail, which come in at #2 on the list. Prices started with R+L at $325 to have it to Evansville from Bedford in one day. The prices spanned all the way to $816 in 2 days. Crazy Prices. You could by the dryer and a small tv to go along with it for that price! Rail is definitely a possible option because of the local railways that are still used nearby. The downfall to this option though is that it is quite a bit more expensive then the #1 option on our list. While it would work, the price still just is not in a good range. I am not sure if this is due to the fact that Evansville is fairly close and would just take a lot of resources to ship only one large Dryer. You would definitely be better off taking it to Evansville yourself.
The best and final mode of shipment is the truck, coming in at #1. The starting price for truck was again R+L carriers at $145, which is 50% of the lowest rail cost. The prices ranged all the way to $398 and some of the highest prices actually took the longest to ship! Cost can vary depending on the item, whether it needs insurance, distance, and desired arrival time. A special shoutout to a friend and representative from freightcenter.com that returned a call to help me with some information. He shared with me that not only do the dimensions and weight need to be known, but also the NMFC, which is a National Motor Freight Code, must be known as well! They have special softwares that give them codes for everything from a desk all the way to a car. This code helps them determine the freight class of the product and can overall give a better quote on the price for truck shipment. Without this code it makes it hard to get an accurate representation of that the cost of shipment would be. This could allow for two things of the same size to be a different price based on their freight class. It seems that the truck would definitely be the best way to go. It is by far the cheapest and probably quickest way. There may be cheaper ways of getting the dryer to Evansville through certain companies, but based on what I found with the conditions and size of the Samsung, it costs quite a bit to go this short distance. I say you load up the back of your pickup and enjoy a 2 hour drive to Evansville, Indiana.

Electrical energy is an essential ingredient for all activities, as well as the lifeblood of economies throughout the world. It plays a vital role for economic growth and quality life improvements: with the increase in population of the world. The demand for power has gradually increased. Hence the burden on the countries, especially developing countries like India have increased to meet the demands in the present day. Most of the demands are met by conventional sources such as fossil fuels, hydal, nuclear power etc. The use of these sources have not only resulted in their depletion. But also increased the population. Hence there is a great need for improving technology in the use of non-conventional...

...Chapter 1 Introduction Rationale of the Study A mosquito coil is mosquito-repelling incense, usually shaped into a spiral, and typically made from a dried paste of pyrethrum powder. The coil is usually held at the center of the spiral, suspending it in the air, or wedged by two pieces of fireproof nettings to allow continuous smoldering. Burning usually begins at the outer end of the spiral and progresses slowly toward the center of the spiral, producing a mosquito-repellent smoke. A typical mosquito coil can measure around 15 cm in diameter and lasts around 8 hours. Mosquito coils are widely used in Asia, Africa, and South America. Southeast Asian countries, specifically Philippines are eventually tackling problems about diseases carried by the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are the tiny insects far more nefarious than snakes or any other creature encountered in the wild. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 20,000 people die per year due to snakebite, but malaria - delivered by mosquitoes -kills more than fifty times that number of people annually. Add other mosquito-borne illnesses to the threat and suddenly humans appear to be losing the battle. (World Health Organization 2006) But with the mosquito coils, mosquito bites are now less problem in our sleep time during at night, it contributes also to the prevention campaign of diseases carried by mosquitoes. In the Philippines there are different manufacturers of quality mosquito...

Abstract This paper analyzed the economic feasibility of a mobile bioenergy pyrolysis system using a Monte Carlo simulation model. Pyrolysis transforms any cellulosic materials into i) a bio-oil similar to crude oil ii) a synthesis gas similar to natural gas, and iii) a bio-charcoal substance. The pyrolyzer machine is currently being manufactured and tested with various types of feedstocks including corn stover and energy sorghum. The economic analysis focused on creating an automated process that integrates a transportation logistics cost optimization model with geographic information system (GIS) data. The geographic data provides possible paths for the mobile bioenergy pyrolysis unit as it moves to and from each harvest area, depending on stochastic availability of feedstock (determined by historical crop yields) and distance to oil refineries. The results indicated that there is a low probability of a positive Net Present Value (NPV) with current economic conditions. In general, the NPV was highest with a stationary scenario and it decreased with...

Environment Pollution

...How to Prevent Pollution “This entire planet is our home. We are the only species that systematically destroy our own habitat."- Marianne Williamson Pollution prevention is an exceptionally major global concern because of the harmful effects of pollution on the person’s health and on the environment. Environmental pollution comes in various forms, such as: air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, etc. Everyone is a stakeholder as we are all inhabitants of this one and only mother earth. Each person has something to contribute to advance an effective pollution prevention awareness initiative. Environmental protection is caring for us, loving our children and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. "If we heal the earth, we heal ourselves." You and I should therefore accept personal responsibility for the success of the environmental protection programs of our respective community by cooperating and actively participating in making the atmosphere pollution free. Help stop pollution today. Although on an individual basis we can help combat pollution in our own immediate environment, efficient control can be best institutionalized through legislation. Thus, most countries have already addressed the issue by passing some form of pollution prevention measures. Averting the onset of pollution in any area, i.e. be it on air, water or land, could be the start and the simplest preventive solution to the problem. This calls for a conscientious effort to adopt...

My Roommate

...So, a couple of weeks ago, one of my roommates, Jonathan (who, for briefest background information, will rewash clothes multiple times if they have gotten wrinkled from being left in the dryer for too long, but who will not just *iron the clothes*) announced that he would be able to get some new furniture for the apartment, but he would need Ari (our other roommate) and me to help bring it in. I was initially opposed...we already had a couch and didn't need another. There were other pieces of furniture we could use (dining room chairs or a table to replace our lawn chairs and lawn table, for example), but I didn't want to get involved with whatever shenanigans that will come over just getting a *second couch*. But eventually, Jonathan talked Ari and me into helping. (Our reservations had been that we thought he was going to ask us to split the cost of the furniture, reasoning that each of us would be using it. I was opposed to the prospect of paying, even in part, for furniture that I had never seen before, but it turned out that the furniture was free -- Jonathan's mom's friend was giving away the furniture, not selling it.) Soon, the day came for us to help move the furniture and we went to U-Haul to pick up the truck that Jonathan had reserved. We took Ari's car to the U-Haul place, and the plan was that Jon would drive the U-Haul truck to his mom's friend's apartment, I would be his navigator (ughggghhh), and then Ari would follow with his car, so he didn't have to leave...

Australian Ethics in Engineering

...The Australian education system which has been operating in Australia since European settlement has been unsuccessful in meeting the needs of Indigenous Australians. There is a long history of educational inadequacy where Aboriginal Australians are concerned. With a comprehensive understanding of the difficulty Indigenous children face in terms of acquiring an education in our education system, it is now possible to recognize particular techniques which may be used in an attempt to counteract or minimise troubles caused by feelings of discrimination amongst Indigenous children. We believe a problem with Aboriginal schooling retention rates is that the students don’t feel captivated or that the content being taught applies to them, and therefore they don’t care for education. We believe our education strategy needs to focus on correcting this by teaching the truth and history about colonisation and developing awareness and appreciation of Indigenous culture. By incorporating Indigenous teachings into the curriculum, we will engage students and improve school completion rates. A good education determines many factors in an Indigenous child’s health, literacy, employment and productivity. It is widely believed that Aboriginal children learn best and most efficiently when educated by a culturally aware teacher, preferably an Indigenous teacher. Aboriginal teachers bring a bigger range of cultural perspectives into schools and develop relations with the Indigenous communities around...
