Traveling Nightmare At the young age of 25, I packed my children and everything I owned to move across country to prove myself. We lived in Indiana for a short time till home sicken kicked in. At which point I placed everything in storage till a later date and loaded my car down and headed home. The traveling nightmare began a year and a half later. Our traveling nightmare begins on an early August morning at DFW International Airport at 4 am to board a plane headed to Indianapolis. My traveling companion is my sixteen year old cousin Becky. Becky was super excited to fly on an airplane and travel outside of Texas. Neither of us knew what the next few days would have in store for us. We board our plane and watch the sun come up as we take off, this my friends the most the enjoyable part of our traveling nightmare. The plane trip was uneventful. We landed in Chicago and played around in the airport for a few hours. We boarded our second plane, which was a crop duster and scared Becky. We land at Indianapolis International Airport safe and sound. We hail down a taxi to take us to pick up the U-Haul in Meridian Hills, IN. The taxi ride was fun for a few minutes, till I realized the taxi driver was going the wrong way! The taxi driver was more concerned about asking us question about President George W. Bush than where he was going. For some crazy reason he thought everyone from Texas is or was related to the President. We arrive at the U-Haul location, where the taxi driver over charged us by $75. I was just ready to be out of the taxi and headed home. The U-Haul manager was a jerk from the minute we walked into his U-Haul/Mini Mart/ Farm supply store. First he did not have the correct size truck available, even though I reserved my U-Haul 2 months prior. So I was left with a 26’

...creeped open as cold fear gripped me, nausea poured over me as I felt panic entering my soul. But before I could do anything, a recollection of drunken fist was smashed on me and I could not rebel at all. I could not stop the tears in my eyes as they just flowed freely. Everything just seemed so break and hopeless to me. For the next few minutes, it was like hell, but my father soon got exhausted and left the room. I huddled at the corner of my room and keep on hoping that it was just a dream. The entire room was dark except for the glow which came from the flickering computer screen. I closed my eyes and felt another bout of tears coming. “I swear, I am not going to let him off so easily!” I thought to myself, full of hatred. But the nightmare was not over, history repeated itself, just a few hours later. I could no longer tolerate it, I used all the strength I have and push him. He fell onto the ground and suddenly, he seems to have great difficulty in breathing. It was his heart attack. Upon seeing it, I rush to his bedroom to search for his medicine and found it. I then tried to hurried and get back to him, but then, I suddenly stop. I hesitated. Looking at the hardship he was going through now, he thought about those things that he have did to me just now, I then threw the bottle of medicine away. This was my only chance to get back on him, but I just stared instantly at him. He was...

Naturalism

...Naturalism depicts the realism of events, occasions, life and people. It considers the inescapable force of heredity, social conditions and environment in shaping human character. An intensive analysis of the “A Long Day’s Journey into Night” clearly shows that it is an example of naturalism. This argument is supported by the following facts and discussions. The play has the quality of naturalism evidenced by the unfolding nightmare realities of family life right from the beginning to the end of the play. At act one, Mary, James’ wife is treated from the addiction of morphine and seems to abandon the habit and tries to assume a new life. In some occasions she opted to sleep alone to seek self comfort by avoiding the snoring of her husband. She shows great improvement in health and everybody in the family is happy about her change. Surprisingly, this new life without morphine does not hold long, she is forced by her unhealed addiction and breaks loose into it. The family stress of Edmund bad health, James and Jamie alcoholism may have contributed to her further indulgence into morphine. The fact that one of the family member contracts tuberculosis seems to be anticipated as it is revealed Mary’s father died of it. This case objectively support naturalism, it explains that the disease was passed through heredity. Moreover, Mary initiates an earlier discussion of Edmund’s deteriorating health, begins by being solicitous of him, saying he should not go up...

Oaky....

...Alexus Harris FYE – Global Perspective in Film January 25, 2014 Professor Abott Life in Day The film, “Life in a Day” showed me that people that live all around the world can be similar and completely different at the same time. This movie was very interesting and eye opening to me. I learned that even though people around the world could have different cultures and beliefs we could all be the same in many other ways. The part of the movie that interested me the most was when different people were asked what was in their pockets. This interested me because even though the people that were asked had little to no similarities all of their answers were generally the same. Some people stated there was money and others stated that there was nothing. The people that had nothing thought that it wasn’t important to have anything because family was all they needed. I think that family was an important factor in the movie as well. Few of the people in the movie stated that they wanted family and a lot of the answers they got were family related. I think that that is fundamental because no matter where you go in the world people always stated that family was important; making everyone in the world more relatable to each other despite their cultural differences. The part of the movie that shocked me the most was when we saw the way they butchered the cow. It was shocking because I’ve never thought of where our food came from or how it got in the packaging. There was not a part...

The Never Ending Nightmare, a Nightmare Within Itself

...“The Never Ending Nightmare, a Nightmare within Itself” I will never forget the day when one of my worst nightmares became a comical reality. It started out as any normal Friday the Thirteenth, or so I had thought. For my sense of time had completely been forgotten. Beep! Beep! Beep! This was the annoying sound of my alarm clock that I would wake up too every morning. I used to dread this sound but lately, it was like a gift from God. I had been restless the past couple of nights—tossing and turning about my bed. I would have dreams, no, horrible nightmares of performing in front of a large crowd and just freeze. I was not able to move nor was I able to speak. I would just stand there in front of what seemed like the whole world and sob. This sounds like an exaggerated case of stage fright only, it was not. I had never experienced anything of the sort. I would enter stage left, cross downstage, and then begin to recite my self-published, might I add, monologue to my peers and professors. About a good four minutes in, the lights would start to flicker. It did not bother me at first, but it continued. Eventually, the lights shut off completely. The only light remaining was the ghost light placed at center stage behind me. Suddenly, an eerie fog made its way through the cracks under the doors and in the walls. Everyone in the audience seemed to twist into a sick-like, monstrous mutation. Their faces went from laughter and serenity to anger and despair. Even their bodily appearances...

My Fear Analysis

...My Fear by Lawrence Raab struck me as a simplistic poem when first read. Upon the first reading I understood that Raab was talking about the emotion of fear, but once I read it again you couldn’t help but pick up on the obvious personification that Raab uses. I believe that to be the overall literary device that he uses in this poem. He refers to fear, an emotion, as “he” and “mister” giving it a much more personal backbone. “Mr. Fear” shows how Raab has respect for him and what he does. He doesn’t want fear to not exist, but instead he acknowledges fear’s existence. Raab gives fear its own emotions by saying, “Maybe he smiles when he finds the right one. Maybe he’s sorry.” I also feel like in this poem, Raab is talking about a nightmare. Nightmares always induce fear into our peaceful rest. The poem talks about dreams and what fear has in store for them. He also asks fear to make his burden he takes from him to be small and easy to get rid of. I tried to find some underlying meaning to the part of the poem where it says, “Fear, let me have a small brown bat and a purse of crickets...,” but I still wasn’t sure. A brown bat might represent a boy because boys play baseball and the purse would represent a girl. But I was still unaware how it tied into the fear notion. The overall theme that Raab is trying to get across with this poem is that fear is alive. It’s an emotion everyone feels, but it is also something that lives inside each person. It feeds off our deepest thoughts...

The Nightmare Lake

...The Nightmare Lake 1930 Written by Howard Phillips Lovecraft * In “distant Zan” – a lake is portending evil or harm. The lake is filled with dreadful creatures – lizards, snakes, ravens, vampires, necrophagi(nekrofaji) “and curious birds that reach that shore, are seen by mortals nevermore” mysterious lake – dangerous: like the birds, you can get caught/ trapped in the lake if you are curious about its contents. Becomes intimidating. * Sense of awful smelling/disturbing stench: “Lizards and snakes convuls'd and dying; ravens and vampires putrefying; all these and hov'ring o'er the dead, necrophagi that on them fed.” * Must conclude that it a horrible place because of this described environment Convulsed = I krampetrækning Putrefying = forrådnede, rotten Hovering: svæver Necrophagi = ådselædere, animals who lives on dead animals. Fx vultures. “And as the dreadful moon climbed high…I saw the lake’s dull water glow, till sunken things appeared below… the towers of a forgotten town” * The lake is actually covering a sunken town. * Major horror the narrator witnesses is that this sunken town contains greater monstrosities: mossy walls, lethal shades of upper space hovered(hyle) at the moon’s sardonic(kynisk) face DREAMS: Only through nightmares = know the true horror:” In nightmares only it is told what scenes beneath those beams unfold; what scenes, too old for human sight, lie sunken there in endless night; for in those depths there...

Types of Dreams and Sleep Walking

...three types of dreams Introduction Attention Getter: The world of imagination available to us in our sleep is probably taken for granted by many. However, no one can disagree to the mysteriousness of dreams. Roadmap: In this speech, I will describe four dreams and sleep walking. I will take you through the nightmare, the recurring dream, the flase awakning lucid dream and finally sleep walking body Main Point: First looking at nightmares, we all recognize that their mystery is first and foremost coupled with horror. The International Association for the Study of Dreams, or IASD, provides us valuable insight into their nature. Sub Point: The potential causes of a nightmare are varied. Creative, emotional, and sensitive people tend to have more nightmares, as they are more highly aware of their surroundings and circumstances (IASD 2013). For others, nightmares are side effects of drug and medication use. Others are the result of post-traumatic stress, including the loss of a loved one, assault, or combat (IASD 2013). in addition to daily stressful problems. Therefore, nightmares are thought to be psychosomatic mechanisms to call attention to the issues in our lives (IASD 2013). Main Point: The recurring dream provides less horror to our dreams, and also a deeper mystery. Recurring dreams are those dreams that we have over and over, as if it were a task that we keep trying to complete. In fact, Dr. Angel Morgan writes in the Huffington Post that it may be...

A Mothers Worst Nightmare

...A Mother’s Worst Nightmare ... I’ll never forget the day my worst nightmare as a mother became reality. It was a cold September, Sunday morning. I had been awaken to the sound of my mother’s voice; “We are going to talk later. I can’t deal with you right now.” The tone of her voice made my bones tremble with fear. I was scared to get up but I could feel the Lord telling me I had to get up. NOW! As I climbed out of bed my fiancé, Tim, started rambling. All I heard was something about, “I don’t know what she’s freaking out about, blah, blah, Jadon got his finger stuck in this, blah, blah. I didn’t do anything.” At that point everything sounded like far off distant, distorted whispers. I got up and left the room closing the door behind me. I found my mother in the kitchen. I could see the sweat pouring down her. I asked her what was going on and the coffee mug in her hand suddenly hit the floor and shattered. I’ve never seen my mother shake like she was that morning. As much as I didn’t want to know what was going on, I knew I needed to, and soon. God was still sitting in the crook of my ear screaming at me, “NOW!” I was out of creamer so I asked my mother to take me down to the store so I could get some. I did just that and being that Sunday mornings ran a lot smoother when we all had our coffee, she agreed to take me. I came out of the store got in the car and asked her to please tell me what was going on. She immediately started freaking out that...

Lucid Dreaming

...December 8, 2010 “Dreams versus reality” is a motif that serves an important role in Revolutionary Road. Many of the main characters day dream and imagine theoretical situations. This can be applied in real life to the majority of people because whether tired or bored, one will eventually dream in one way or another. Lucid dreaming is a term created by Frederik van Eeden that is used to describe a dream in which one is aware that he/she is dreaming. This type of dreaming is considered by many as a higher level of consciousness. Most people do not know what lucid dreaming is and those who do rarely are aware of how to realize that they are dreaming, let alone actually manipulate their dreams. Lucid dreaming can have many benefits in one’s life, whether it’s relieving stress, learning or studying, having fun, etc. Also, there is little risk in dreaming lucidly, since dreams do not take place in the physical world. Anything that can benefit many people with little risk should be readily available and encouraged. Dreaming lucidly fits this description yet is not studied often, and on top of that, is not taken very seriously within the scientific community. Lucid dreaming should be a topic that is taught and discussed more often than is currently in everyday life. To understand lucid dreaming, one must understand the two different types of “life”. One of which is waking life, which you probably can guess, refers to one’s life while they are awake. The other of which...

Docx

...Docx Insomnia I woke up, bathed in sweat. Once again a nightmare disturbed my night´s sleep. It was too early to early to get up, but I was restless. I knew I would not be able to fall asleep again, doesn´t matter how hard I´d try. I hated to get up at an unearthly hour! I rolled out of bed and trudged into the kitchen to have some lemonade. It was still dark outside and the windy weather made the trees outside scratch against my windows. The thought about my nightmare disgusted me. I drank my glass of lemonade at one go. Afterwards I went to the bathroom to get some cold water in my face to refresh up a bit. I looked myself in the eyes in the mirror with dislike, wondering why such nightmares were torturing me night after night. I hated myself for that, but could not help it anyway. All day long at work I was absent and worn out. All I could think about was that I wanted some sleep. I felt like I did not sleep a wink last night. Pictures from the nightmare whirled around in my head like an infinite movie. The whole day was a pure nightmare too, people looked strangely at me like I was a sick person instead of asking how I felt. But on the other hand I would not like to answer if they did anyway. None of their business. That night I lay in my bed and stared around in the room for indefinite time. I felt so tired, but I was afraid of falling asleep to get hunted by nightmares again. I thought about how I could make an end of this riot. I was sick and tired of that condition...

Dreams Term Paper

...RESEARCH PAPER - DREAMS About a month ago the two of us brainstormed a few ideas for our first Psychology project. After a weighing the pros and cons of our options, we decided to research dreams and dreaming. We were hoping to learn some information over the vague topic of dreams such as the biology, the causes of dreams, and possibly some of the meanings behind certain dreams. Not only that, but we were interested in the different varieties of dreams people had and why they had them. From the beginning, we had hoped to answer some seemingly basic questions such as “What is a dream?” “What are some different types of dreams people experience?” and “Why would someone experience a certain type of dream?” After many hours and much research, we feel that we were rather successful in answering these and many more questions regarding the topic. So what IS a dream? Well, according to Sigmund Freud, dreams are the, “royal road to the unconscious.” Coming into this project with little to no experience on the topic, it was more than difficult to comprehend why it was that important. “They’re only dreams,” we would say, but after extensive research and reading, it is much easier to follow where Freud was coming from. You see, dreams are not simple; you have to admire the intricacy of a dream interweaving thoughts, ideas, and experiences a person has had in his/her lifetime. The process of dreaming itself connects different parts of the mind that may not be able to find each other...
