Autism is a disorder that many children in America have, but the best way to deal with this disorder is to find ways to progress with their abilities to learn and better their everyday skills. There are many different treatments of Autism for children that can help with their skills. Autism is a neuro developmental disorder that has alternative treatments with medical care and support from others. The best periods to get these treatments are for young children were they’re still learning developmental skills. The three main ideas I am discussing are the physical, social, and medical treatments for this disorder.
The physical treatments that are around to support children with Autism are therapy. There are different types of therapy they can get support with such as occupational, sensory, and craniosacral therapy. These therapies can significantly help these children’s motor skills. In the Article “Traditional occupational Therapy Services for Youth with Neurologic and developmental disabilities, by Windy Chou and Minerva Duong they stated that “Occupational therapists aim to improve client factors and skills that will enable re-engagement or new engagement in valued activities. Valued activities can include work, and community integration, which is one of the instrumental activities of daily living. Typically developing youth and young adults have many life skills to learn to prepare them for post-secondary schooling, or independent living, such as money and health management, that are addressed by their families” ”however, youth with disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder require additional help from therapist to learn such skills due to 1) altered abilities to learn and 2) uncertainty of their caregivers on the available options for their loved ones.”(179). In the journal “Effectiveness of combined approach of Craniosacral Therapy (CST)and Sensory- Integration Therapy (SIT) on reducing features in children with Autism” Durga Prasad Mishra thought of a method were he would combined craniosacral Therapy and Sensory therapy together to create a strong result of treatment. He stated that “CST can be powerful paired with SI therapy because CST works directly on the nervous system to improve neurological functioning, processing and integration of sensory information. SI therapy often allows a child to better tolerate the gentle, steady touch of CST and to facilitate and further the changes that result from treatment.” (Mishra 3).
In my opinion, I feel that these therapies will significantly help these children to better themselves in everyday tasks. These therapies will support these children with managing their money, and how they interact with different people. If a child was spending majority of their time practicing their motor skills and bettering themselves everyday they’re going to get better. I am happy we have occupations like these to help children with disabilities. This will also help these individuals with being able to go to school and to live on their own in the future. With Autism there are still many different treatments to help better there everyday skills.
The social treatments that are around to help children with Autism are their families, and communities. Families at home can help children with Autism because after leaving their therapies they can go home and still learn everyday motor skills that they’ll need to learn for the future. There was a study in this article were they gave siblings with developing children and their sibling with autism a iPad with game activities on it and to see if the iPad made a difference with the way the interacted or if it helped them with learning. In the Article “Effectiveness of siblings-Delivered iPad Game Activities in Teaching Social Interaction Skills to Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder” Arzu Ozen stated that “in this study, the effectiveness of a sibling training package offered for teaching social interaction skills that are used by typically developing children while playing iPad game activities with their siblings who have autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is investigated. Three children with ASD and their typically developing siblings participated in the study.” “During these sessions, typically developing siblings implemented the same process with different children with ASD in the unit.” “Data revealed that they were able to learn how to use the social interaction skills necessary for the iPad game activities. All mothers reported their satisfaction about involving their typically developing children in the sibling training programs as well as their children performances during the study.”(Ozen 1288)
In my opinion I feel this was a good study because not only did he just work one on one with the children he had them interact together to see how they change and what they learn from each other. When children can constantly interact with each other on a daily basis they are going to learn. They are going to learn better behavior skills, social skills, and learn how to interact better with their siblings.Children with developmental disabilities learn social skills during their early ages of child hood. They can learn the social skills from every day natural interactions that happen at home and at school. I feel that using a iPad to interact with the siblings is a very good way to get the children with autism a way to bond and interact with their siblings because usually children with autism like to spend majority of their time alone. The iPad will give them the ability to play games together, and learn how to use the device. Even though the social treatments help the children with autism with everyday skills, there are still other treatments to help the children better their lives. There is a medical treatment to help children with Autism. This medical treatment doesn't cure Autism, but it does help deal with the aggressive behaviors and irritability that children have. Acetylcysteine the treatment that will help with these signs of aggression. In the case report "Acetylcysteine for treatment of autism spectrum disorder symptoms" by Danielle Stutzman and Julie Dopheide, they did a study to show that this medication would help children with these disabilities. The summary of the report was " A 17-year-old Hispanic male with ASD and intellectual disability was hospitalized for impatient psychiatric treatment due to impulsive and violent behavior." "Treatment with 20% acerylcysteine oral solution was initiated at a dosage of 600 mg twice daily as an adjunct to quetiapine therapy. Over the next six weeks, reductions in the patient's aggressive behavior, tantrums, and irritability were noted. The use of as-needed medications to control aggression was decreased, and the dosage of quetiapine was lowered from 700 to 400 mg daily over the course of the hospitalization." (Stutzman1956). I feel that Acetylcysteine is a very good treatment that improves ASD symptoms that are the aggressive behaviors. This treatment can help the children with Autism cope with the feelings more, and not always feel so angry. Instead of throwing their tantrums and aggressive behavior, now this medication can help control their aggression. I know a child that went through these symptoms on a daily basis, a doctor prescribed him Quetiapine and a lot of his symptoms went away. We had to monitor his every day skills to see if we see any changes in his behavior, but for the most part the medication was a huge success. This medicine can really make a difference in the children lives with ASD, hopefully there becomes a drug that can cure Autism, but for now this medication makes a difference. Autism is a disorder that many children in America have, but the best way to deal with their disorder is to find ways to progress with their abilities to learn and better their everyday skills. As stated above there are three main treatments to help with autism such as physically, socially, and medically. All of these treatments helped the children with disabilities tremendously. There are therapies that can help them with their motor skills physically. There are social treatments that can help them with learning things on a everyday natural basis. They also have medical treatments that can control their aggressive behaviors, irritability and how they interact with people. These treatments can help the children make a huge difference in their lives, especially doing these treatments all together.

Diagnosis and Treatments

...April BEH 225 May 19, 2012 Diagnosis and Treatments Autism is a psychological disorder that affects approximately one in five-hundred children (Morris & Maisto, 2002). It is a significant disorder that is characterized by deficits in social impairments and abnormal motor behaviorisms. While there is no known cause to this disorder, it is believed that autism may stem from biological factors. Over the years Autism was speculated to have a link between vaccines that were administered to the children because of possible mercury exposure containing Thimersosal (Love to Know Everything You'd Love to Know, 2011). However, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims Office of Special Masters determined that the measles, mumps, and the rubella vaccine were not the cause of autism. In another perspective, a study done thru John Hopkins University and the Broad Institute of Harvard found a genetic code that is associated with Autism. The research studied the genetics of 1,031 families that had a minimum of two autistic members of the family. It was found that all the families exhibited the same pattern on the fifth chromosome near the gene semaphorin 5a. This gene’s expression was at a lower rate in the study with participants (Love to Know Everything You'd Love to Know, 2011). Additional studies have found that there may also be a link between Autism and autoimmune diseases. While most would advocate that Autism is a biological circumstance it is also believed that there...
