Like this quote, Jim Hawkins changes from a poltroon to an adventurous living soul. Heroism is the discovery of the true meaning of responsibility. Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Treasure Island, a book that shows how the death of those close to him, the fear of dieing, and relationships with his mother and buccaneers ameliorated and matured Jim Hawkins.
The death of people close to Jim advanced his survival skills and made Jim more of an extrovert. For example, Jim’s father’s departure from earth not only made Jim heartbroken, but it made Jim even more depressed toward Billy Bones’ death (Stevenson 16, 18). Billy Bones, a buccaneer customer at the Admiral Benbow Inn, made Jim snivel when he earned the black spot, even though he never liked him (18). “For I certainly never liked the man, though of late I had begun to pity him, but as soon as I saw that he was dead, I burst into a flood of tears” (chapter.3) Later, he ends up telling his mother all Billy Bones’ secrets and protecting the Admiral Benbow Inn (18-20). After Pew, a blind man, disconcerted Jim and the people at the Admiral Benbow Inn, Pew visited the Admiral Benbow Inn again with the intentions to steal a map (7-27). Jim is scared but his curiosity takes over and Dr. Trelawney eventually saves him (24-27). Also, Jim later eavesdrops on a secret meeting between John Silver and a rebellion on the Hispaniola. After hearing about how the men want to take over the ship, Jim is horrified and immediately decides to tell the Captain about the plan (64-66). Lastly, Jim runs away from the scene where John Silver murdered Tom (78) All situations prove how Jim evolves throughout his journey.
