And the topic I will be covering today is that of Tribunes.
What il be looking at in my presentation is a little historical background at how the Tribunes came about, what they stood up for and some of the features of the Tribunes, and what role the Tribunes played in Roman society, and also look at quick Case Study that looks at a prominent Tribune in Roman history.

Il begin very briefly with a quick introduction into what Tribune means in the literal sense.

So the word, tribune was a title shared by elected officials in Rome.
They were called Tribunes because at one time the whole body of citizens were divided into 3 parts, and one Tribune was elected from each part of the 3 Tribes.
When reading about Tribunes, to a large degree, it is a constant battle between Plebeian and Patricians. On the one hand you have the Plebeians constantly fighting for equality and a political voice to be heard, and on the other hand you have the patricians trying to hold their control in society and Roman politics.

There were also various different Tribunes, which included the Plebeian Tribune and the Military Tribune.

The Military Tribunes were officials from each of the 3 ranks of men, the hastate, principes and triarii. The military Tribunes were initially important because before the Plebeian Tribunes were created, plebeian civilians had no else to turn to protect them so naturally they would turn to the military Tribunes for assistance, and as you will find out soon, plebeian tribunes were created and eventually recognized as public officials as a result plebeian soldiers demanding reform.
