At first glimpse the town comes off as reserved and highly business centered, however underneath the surface there is a feeling of unstableness and extreme lack of morals. When first being introduced to the town there is a strong symmetrical aspect, creating a sense of structure, one after another, business buildings compacted side by side, line the edges of the open dirt road. An ambiance of superiority and conservativeness ooze out of the vastness of the western town, as pairs of two travel about in a sauntering directness, dressed in sober blacks, while the end of the road fogs out in a misty view of the auspicious atmosphere. The hanging grounds portray the reality, of which the former level of respect is diminished, contrasted by the injustfulness clearly observed as three “criminals” are being set to their hanging. The townees gather like a herd of animals, gawking in an impatient wait for the men to be executed, showing a sort of gruesome excitement for the occasion. Proceeding down the line, each man is given a chance for a few final words, the first grubby looking and untamed, shouts words of condemnation into the crowd, claiming “there are many out there worse than I”. Beside the angry convict, the next man is blubbering his innocence as tears roll down his exhausted face, while the final man whom is an indian is revoked the ability to speak as his head is brutally shoved into a brown sack, seconds before released to their death. Witnessing this, it is clear that the town is not as sound and stable as it once appeared.

Colonel Stonehills little shop is just a tiny stop along the journey of 14 year old Maddie. Waltzing into the confines of the property, an astute outside light shines throughout, as she approaches Stonehill, portraying that this moment is going to be a win on her account. Maddie plants herself firmly in front of the man, as he glances upwards at her, she staring back at him, he goes to quickly dismiss her. Stonehills attitude towards Maddie suggests he believes her to be ignorant in the aspect of business, unphased she brushes his arrogance off, proceeding straight to her point. Standing upright, there is a symmetry to the young girl. Dressed in a plain black buttoned shirt, her hair with a distinctly parted down the center of her head, pulled into tight uniform pigtails; without hesitation speaking confidently in a manner only to be described as calmly stern, Maddie comes off as powerfully innocent. Demanding that the Colonel compensate for her fathers horse being stolen by Tom Chaney, also stating he must take back two horses and pay her for them, the shot zooms in to a close up view, switching back and forth between Stonehill and Maddie every time one spits back a counter-argument. Shifting to a full view of both Maddie and the Colonel, his desk positioned at the very back of the shop, strewn in the corner overflowing with scattered papers, literally shoving him in a corner, showing his inevitable loss in this battle. There is an abundance of things to be taken in, in the midst of the courthouse, the enclosure drowning in tension. Here is the first face-to-face reveal of the “gritty-- mean” U.S Marshall, Rooster Cogburn. A long shot filmed from slightly behind the crowd of townsmen, peering silently with their arms stiffly folded, slowly but steadily circles the room, keeping both the Marshall and the mens narrow eyed faces within the shot, captures the judgmentalness flowing out, settling onto Rooster. Haggarded with terse accusations regarding his actions as a bounty hunter, Cogburn slumps casually in a wooden interrogation chair, spits out responses effortlessly, giving them what they want to hear, as if a script he has rehearsed. His voice raspy and unforgiving, the shot inching ever so closely to his face, suggests that he may not be as truthful as once perceived. Aside from dispersion of the keylight creating a hazy view, the dim lanterns bordering the neutral colored walls, appear as a saturated sunset entering the domain, symbolizing the hidden darkness of both Rooster and the people of the town alike, which a faint light is beginning to be shed upon.

True Grit Analysis

...First published in 1968, True Grit, authored by Charles Portis, soon became a classic novel for many generations to appreciate. Set during the Wild West, readers can experience the journey of main protagonist Mattie Ross, a teenage girl who is seeking to avenge her father’s death. Mattie is independent, courageous, and has lots of determination. She is willing to sacrifice anything, even one of her limbs, in order to achieve her goal of revenge on Tom Chaney, the murderer of her father. Although True Grit does not give input on Mattie’s musical tastes, based on her personality and experiences in life, one could conclude that a hypothetical present-day Mattie, who would still be teenager, might have enjoyed songs such as “Fight Song,” “Move...

True Grit Character Analysis

...In the book True Grit Mattie Ross takes revenge on her father’s killer. Frank Ross was shot by Tom Chaney, and Mattie is angry and is willing to do everything in her power to see to it he pays. The U.S. Marshal named Rooster Cogburn helps Mattie to find him. According to a sheriff, Rooster “is a pitiless man, double-tough, and fear doesn’t enter into his thinking.” (Portis 25). Mattie is on a mission and she won’t stop until Chaney is dead. Mattie character seems to have a strong mindset. She is very head strong, and independent because she negotiated prices with the man to go with her, she pointed the gun at Chaney and forced him to come with her although he refused and she ended up shooting him. Anyone wouldn’t figure that a 14 year old girl would go look for her dad, and she wouldn’t go with two grown men. Mattie got older and she didn’t have kids or have time for marriage. She didn’t hear anything from Cogburn since the journey of killing Chaney. She remains a head strong woman and continues to look up to her dad even though he has deceased. Mattie takes responsibility from her dad’s death, she shot Chaney, and she...

True Grit Movie Review

...MOVIE REVIEW: TRUE GRIT 1 Movie Review: True Grit The movie I chose to review is the 2010 remake of “True Grit.” This movie stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld as the main characters. Jeff Bridges plays Rooster Cogburn, Matt Damon plays LaBoeuf and Hailee Steinfeld plays Mattie Ross, Josh Brolin portrays Tom Chaney, the man who murdered Mattie’s father. In the following paragraphs of this paper the following will be discussed: when it was produced, the basic plot line, the themes address regarding the West, the accuracy and portrayal of the characters in relation to the West, the time period and historical setting, and lastly the usefulness of this movie for someone who is interested in the history of the American West. When Produced Ethan and Joel Coen (also known as ‘The Coen Brothers’) directed as well as produced the 2010 adaptation. Steven Spielberg was one of the executive producers. Since this version of “True Grit” was produced in 2010 it is written from a twenty-first century perspective. Although produced so recently, the film was based in 1880 which gives it a one hundred and thirty year gap in time. This tells one that the film had many modern influences. Basic Plot The movie opens with Proverbs 28:1a displayed on the screen, it reads, “The wicked flee when none pursueth.” A song that sounds like the hymn “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” is gently being played on the piano. It is called “The Wicked Flee” and is...

True Grit Redemption Essay

...True Grit In the novel True Grit by Charles Portis many characters earn redemption from previously regrettable actions or character flaws. This is a recurring motif within the story, and it shows a sense of realism amongst the characters. Portis uses characters such as Rooster Cogburn, LaBoeuf, and Mattie Ross’s horse Little Blackie to show that people aren't always who they appear to be and are susceptible to change. We first hear of Rooster Cogburn from the sheriff when Mattie asks about the U.S. marshals. The sheriff says “The meanest one is Rooster Cogburn. He is a pitiless man, double-tough, and fear don't enter into his thinking. He loves to pull a cork.” (Portis 25). Maddie sets high expectations for Rooster after hearing this; however, he lets her down constantly after she discovers he is a dumb, fat, one-eyed drunk, and a bad shot. Rooster later tries to desert Mattie twice and he also leads them right into the smugglers den with Tom Chaney and Lucky Ned Pepper. However, Rooster makes up for his shortcomings when he saves Mattie’s life at the end of the book. She is stuck in a pit with poisonous snakes and bats while an undead Tom Chaney leans in to taunt her. Rooster comes from behind and knocks him hard into the pit with his rifle. Rooster then escorts Mattie to the nearest doctor, getting her there as quickly as possible. Without Rooster, she would’ve been killed and his heroic actions, which go against everything we knew about him, earn his redemption in...

True Grit Analysis

...The movie, True Grit, was a very entertaining film. I chose to watch the newest version of the film that was created in 2010. I have never watched any other versions of this film before this one, so I won’t have any other version to base it off of. Although, I have watched many western films and shows before. In my personal opinion, I think the casting of the characters was great. I thought the actors played their parts wonderfully. I’m aware of the real life actors outside of the movie, and I think they got into character and didn’t show any signs of their real self. I think that’s important in a movie. I was able to view the actors as their characters due to their great acting. I really like the character, Mattie, she is very strong willed...

Ian W. Toll's Six Frigates Summary

...The modest band of ships was a response to the continued capture of American merchant ships by Algerian ships of the Barbary States, as well as the product of incredibly heated debate between those in Congress. These ships proved to be the muscle needed for the U.S. to declare itself as a formidable opponent on the sea, during the Tripoli War, as well as later in the Quasi War with France. However, it was in the War of 1812 with Great Britain that the blooming Navy showed its true might, by once again facing the nation it was once ruled by, this time primarily by the sea. The British Royal Navy ruled the sea as a terrifying power to be reckoned with, the largest of its time and one that had easily crushed any sea-bearing force that opposed it. The ability of the comparably dismal U.S. Navy to hold its own against such a military and gain numerous victories out of their encounters propelled the budding young nation into a status respectable to its European counterparts. These events cemented a Naval force as being integral for America’s seafaring defense and assertion of foreign power, both diplomatic and militaristic. They helped to prove to the rest of the world that by successfully challenging the two greatest powerhouses...

...Top of Form Introduction The utilization of resources and generation of waste is for beyond the limit that the biosphere was made to carry. Infact, man today is caught in the vicious circle of increasing wants, declining resources and increasing waste being generated by the industries and municipalities is posing a problem of enormous dimensions. The domestic and industrial effluents are contributing in enhancing this problem. It might become the biggest problem if it is not dealt with immediately . Industrial Waste The term industrial waste is generally understood to refer specifically to the liquid waste produced as a result of some industrial operation, as distinct from an industry’s solid refuse or its gases, fumes and vapors. Like municipal sanitary sewage, most of such liquids must ultimately be disposed of into rivers or other water courses. The liquid wastes of a community, whether domestic sewage or industrial wastes, should receive appropriate treatment before discharge into streams in order to prevent gross pollution. The treatment methods for domestic sewage are based on a fundamental and growing body of knowledge. These methods, however, are not suitable for industrial wastes, which are quite varied in character. Frequently anew industrial process development will produce a waste that is not amenable to treatment by any of the conventional methods. For such wastes, laboratory investigations followed by pilot-plant studies must precede final design of treatment...
