...Bound to True Love Sharon Olds’ Poem “True Love” takes the reader through several levels and scenarios of expression to explain what loves means to her. She uses actual words and metaphors to explain the “love” and care she has for her husband. Olds uses the word “bound” throughout her poem to insinuate that she is trapped in the relationship with her husband. The use of the word “bound” might have a negative connotation in this poem, but the speaker gives the impression that she loves her husband to a certain degree. While she never mentions the length of their marriage, one can sense that they are not newlyweds. Some might read this poem and get the impression that the speaker feels stuck (trapped) in her relationship with her husband while some readers may feel differently. The speaker starts by saying, “In the middle of the night, when we get up after making love, we look at each other in complete friendship, we know so fully what the other has been doing” (1-4). This suggests that, when a couple is in love one, they must build a friendship. This is why the speaker states, that when she looks at her husband, she knows exactly where he has been, right there with her. While they make love and still respect one another, they become as one. Further, they were bound to each other as she states, “bound to each other like mountaineers coming down from a mountain” (4-5), just like a code of ethics between the two mountaineers, through team work the mountain was climbed. They are...

...Cheryl Sutton English 112 Section G 10/31/13 The Meaning of True Love It’s not easy to find real love let alone love that lasts a lifetime, but in the story “Love Medicine” you get insight to a couple based on the observation of their grandson. Through the narrator, Lipsha Morrissey, we are able to learn about Grandma and Grandpa Kaspaw and how deep their connection is. Grandma Kaspaw demonstrates her first act of love by saving her grandson “she saved me from my own mother, who wanted to tie me in a potato sack and throw me in a slough.” (Erdrich 275) Grandma Kaspaw loved her family and did whatever it took to make sure they were taken care of. In the story Grandpa Kaspaw suffers from Alzheimer’s disease “So I didn’t really listen to hard when the doctor said this was some kind of disease old people got...” (Erdrich 276). This disease really begins to test the love that Grandpa and Grandma have for each other. It is very hard for Grandma to watch him go through this “second childhood” (Erdrich 275) as Grandpa calls it. During this time his behavior is erratic and he does things that are very out of character. The catalyst in this story is Lulu Lamartine, who is a female on the reservation that has had a crush on Grandpa her whole life. She takes advantage of Grandpas disease and allows there to be relations with herself and Grandpa. “but even Grandma had trouble keeping her patience once he started sneaking off to Lamartien’s place…. That’s...

...From the title alone, Robert Penn Warren’s poem “True Love” depicts a “happily ever after” relationship that can not compare to any other joys of life. However, the poem itself highlights the theme of unrequited love and the fervent emotion love can elicit. The poem insinuates that through loss and rejection it is plausible to want the best for the person because those intense feelings still linger beyond heartbreak. Warren strategically uses elements of poetry such as speaker, form, diction and tone, images, and symbols to develop a theme that resonates with humanity. The first stanza of the poem suggests that the speaker has developed strong feelings for someone. The speaker can hear his “heart rave in silence”(line 1) and fails to conjure...

...True Love is my first Melissa Pearl book and I loved it. Nessa and Jimmy’s story pulled me in right away, there was no drawn intro to their story. It went right to the point and showed me what they were suppose to be together. This story was a bit emotional and very sweet. It will definitely touch your hearts and make you fall in love. Jimmy as the rock god in the group, was the biggest manwhore ever. He wasn’t a bad guy, he just didn’t know anything pass girls and sex, that’s what he was brought up to be. He was trained to be that guy, one night stand guy. But one night in the heat of passion he took his best friend Nessa to bed and didn’t think of the consequences of his actions. That night was the biggest mistake of his life that he will...

...When you first watch The Princess Bride you’d think it would be just a tragic romance set in medieval times. Wrong! It wasn’t just a romance; it was action, adventure, comedy and parody mixed together almost flawlessly, with the moral ‘true love conquers all’. A heart-warming, though sometimes confusing fairy tale comes to life in this stand-alone medieval themed movie, proving that true love overcomes all. Based on the book by the same name, written by William Goldman, Buttercup (Robin Wright) is a maiden living in a medieval fantasy world with her lover, Westley (Cary Elwes), a farm boy. After Westley’s death, the manipulative Prince Humperdinck (Chris Saradon) tries to make Buttercup his queen. The mysterious ‘Man in Black’ arrives to save Buttercup, joined by Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), a skilled swordsman out to avenge his father, and Fezzik (Andre the Giant), a dim-witted but kind giant. The plot line flows well and twists are introduced in an effective manner, although some aspects, like when the Man in Black is cured by Miracle Max (Billy Crystal) seem unrealistic even in the fantasy world the story is set....

...Savage 1 Jade Savage Mrs. Echolse-Moore Narrative Essay 19 September 2012 True Love: I first noticed something wasn’t right while watching television with my brother and sister about five years ago. We all heard loud noises coming from my parent’s room thumbing, bangs, yelling, and screaming. My sister Jasmine runs upstairs into my parent’s room. My brother Joseph and I follow her lead. When I came upstairs to where my parents were I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. My father was on the ground and my mother on top of my father punching him in the face and upper body. I stood motionless in my parent’s doorway. Watching my father trying to defend himself and my mother putting anger in every punch. All I could do was burst into tears. My sister immediately ran to break up the fight. My mother was still yelling and swearing at my father. My sister looks at my brother who is standing next to me staring in amazement and yells “JOE ARE YOU GOING TO HELP ME!” What was once a light flow of tears became a heavy flood. It was such a huge night for me because I had always thought my parents were madly in love and that their relationship was perfect. I would always listen to my friends talk about their parents being divorced and the struggle with having to go back and forth to houses and how they missed having a family. I would brag ...

...Tim O'Brien does a fantastic job of blurring the lines of what is true and what is fiction in The Things They Carried. In fact, he often points out that he has made entire stories up, after the fact. He defends his decisions by proposing that what he has done is, in fact, not lie, but rather tell a story-truth. He argues that his reason for doing this is to bring the story to life more than it could live through the happening-truth. 'I want you to feel what I felt. I want you to know why story-truth is truer sometimes than happening-truth' (O'Brien, 183). O'Brien believes that, when accompanied by vivid details which essentially make the reader view the scene as a dream, story-truths can carry greater emotional truths than ever possible to be achieved through actual, happening-truths. With this, he shows, contrary to belief, how story-truths are often truer than happening-truths, and demonstrates this through the addition of often graphic details. Happening-truth encompasses actual events that take place. However true these stories may be, they are often times viewed as unreal simply because they have no details to back them up. The entire shit field scene that was put into this book, for example, was turned from a happening-truth into a story-truth because the original version was not believable. The reader can see this through O'Brien describing the letters that he received from Norman Bowker. Norman writes to Tim, telling him that he should write about the event. 'What...

...“What I tell you three times is true.” (Lewis Carroll) Might this formula – or a more sophisticated version of it – actually determine what we believe to be true? Repetition is our way of learning knowledge. Repetition is drilling something to memory, reinforcing the idea in our heads. It is the key to reflexive use (use without conscious thought). Your mind “learns” by repetition and reinforcement. Repetition and its effects on what we believe to be true, play a major role in the way that we accumulate general knowledge. The formula implies that repetition is equal to truth, when really repetition is just repetition. Repetition does not make a statement the truth. But a statement, if repeated often enough, can come to be accepted as truth. This leads us to the question whether a lie can be accepted as truth. From the standpoint of logic, the number of times an incorrect fact is repeated is irrelevant. It is still false. But research has shown that a statement, even an incorrect fact, if repeated often enough, can be accepted as truth. This paper will examine several research studies, influencing variables, and examples from everyday life to identify this occurrence. In addition to this, the possible effects of repetition will be discussed as well. One of the simplest ways to show how repetition causes a statement to be accepted as truth is gossip. First, someone tells a friend a statement, which can be true or false. This friend tells another friend, who tells another...

...Super Sad True Love Story, America, next to of course god america i, and I, Too, Sing America, are all story/poems that in some form or another address the theme of American exceptionalism and patriotism. In each of the titles, it is established that America is not as revered as it once was or possibly could be and that change needs to take place. Through dystopian tales, satirical speeches and exaggerated ideals the authors of these works of literature try to identify the issues faced in American society. Super Sad True Love story is a novel set in a futuristic world that portrays America as a dystopia. The conditions of the country are horrible; the dollar is extremely unstable, literacy has gone down the drain, privacy is virtually nonexistent and social networking has reached unthinkable extremes. Through these mediums Shteyngart reveals that patriotism is no longer about being proud but rather about surviving. Throughout the novel the state of the United States keeps deteriorating and none of the characters realize how bad it is. Lenny in the novel still holds love for America and hopes against all odds that it once again becomes a country to be admired as is seen in the lines below. “I took out my U.S. passport and held it in my hand, fingering its embossed golden eagle, still hoping it meant something. I remember how my parents would talk about the luck of their having left the Soviet Union for America. Oh God, I thought, let there still be such luck in this new world”...

...survivability of a species. Darwin was well aware of the food chain, but he never discussed how human elitism could affect the food chain. As a result of mass production, human ignorance towards other forms of life proves their elitism. Humans believe that they are the top of the food chain, and therefore, they value their own life far above any other life. They have a biological elitism. With their biological elitism, humans begin developing a superiority complex, which, in result lends them to believe they are a step above “top of the food chain”. Finally, humans can get pleasure from watching the destruction of other life because the destruction reassures humans of their superiority complex. Although each has a unique setting, Super Sad True Love Story, “The People Pound”, and Heathers are all connected in their inherent values of life, each providing a satirical approach to biological elitism and proving the sadism of humanity. Biological elitism starts with the devaluing of other, inferior life forms, which leads to the construction of a biological dictatorship. In Hunter Breckonridge’s story, “The People Pound”, she satirizes the lack of value humans place on animals by paralleling animals with disabled humans, calling disabled humans “duds”. In her story, Gertrude is a middle-aged woman who received brain damage at her job. She is the first “dud” of many seen in the story. The term “dud”, is inherently condescending. It implies a lack of social value in the object. Breckonridge’s...
