...There has been long disagreement about whether tryouts should be discontinued. I am writing to tell you that tryouts and cuts should be allowed for competitive sports. Tryouts motivate teens to work harder, prepares them for adulthood, and it gives teens an opportunity to learn and grow. Tryouts should be continued to determine which athletes are best for that competitive sport. To begin, having tryouts for a competitive team can motivate teens in a positive way. It will show them that you need to work for what you want. For example, expecting yourself to make the team isn’t going to work. The author from the article Cutting Students from Sports Proves to be Beneficial says that people who get cut “understand that the players who succeed are the ones who put in the work, and so this motivates those who have been cut to work harder at the sport and hopefully evolve their passion for the sport.” This evidence proves that being cut will drive teens to participate more and work harder so the outcome of next year could be better. It is a shame that we do not tap this rich source more often in our daily conversation to express ourselves more clearly and precisely. There are of course thesauruses but they mainly list common words. Other vocabulary books list difficult, esoteric words that we quickly forget or feel self-conscious using. However, there is a bounty of choice words between the common and the esoteric that often seem be just on the tip of our tongue. Vocabulary 4000 brings these words to the fore. Whenever possible, one-word definitions are used. Although this makes a definition less precise, it also makes it easier to remember. Many common words appear in the list of words, but with their less common meanings. For example, the common meaning of champion is “winner.” A less common meaning for champion is to support or fight for someone else. (Think of the phrase “to champion a cause.”) This is the meaning that would be used in the list. As you read through the list of words, mark any that you do not know with a check mark.
