...TSA: How Far is too Far? ENG 122 English Composition II Dr. Rigney January 2, 2013 TSA: How Far is too Far? September 11, 2001(9/11) was the day the country was reminded that terrorists attacks on the United States is real and is a serious threat. On that fateful day in 2001, we lost thousands (to date there is still no official number) of our fellow Americans because nineteen terrorists from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger jets. The members of this group were able to pass through airport security with box cutters and “explosives” (this has never been proven to date), to board the passenger jets that would be used in the attack that day. Once the terrorists had taken over the jets in mid-flight, they re-routed the jets to their intended targets. Two of the jets crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. One of the jets was able to hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and the last jet never made it to its intended target because of the brave passengers on board that day. The passengers were able to take back control of the jet from the hi-jackers and the jet was crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania (9/11: timeline of events, 2013). Immediately following these attacks, a nationwide shut down of all aircraft was issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) (Hoffman, 2011, Roberts, 2011, and Hoyer, 2011). This nationwide shut down began to slowly lift on September 12, 2001; this was when the planes...

...C H A P T E R 12 Evaluate Your Argument on the Issue In this chapter you will learn how to identify and overcome errors in reasoning. This is a special step that applies only to issues because resolving issues involves finding the most reasonable belief. Two broad kinds of errors are examined—errors affecting the truth of your ideas and errors affecting the quality of your reasoning. A step-by-step approach to evaluate arguments is also included. ecause your main objective in addressing an issue is not to find the most effective action but to determine the most reasonable belief, your main task in refining an issue is to evaluate your argument to be sure that it is free of error. Two broad kinds of error must be considered. The first affects the truth of the argument’s premises or assertions. The second affects the argument’s validity— that is, the legitimacy of the reasoning by which the conclusion was reached. A sound argument is both true and valid. B ■ ERRORS AFFECTING TRUTH Errors affecting truth are found by testing the accuracy of the premises and the conclusion as individual statements. The first and most common error in this category is simple factual inaccuracy. If we have investigated the issue properly and have taken care to verify our evidence whenever possible, such errors should not be present. We will therefore limit our consideration to the more subtle and common errors: ISBN 1-256-46689-1 • • • • Either/or thinking Avoiding the issue Overgeneralizing...

...events. Due to these events security measures have increased dramatically over the last ten years to include new technology and security programs to reduce possible terrorist threats from boarding plans. I would like to understand if the correlation between the increased aviation security measures and the deterrence of terrorist utilizing this form of transportation in a terrorist plot. Understanding whether or not aviation security measures are effectively deterring terrorist threats could help shape the future of transportation security within the United States. If effective then some form of these security programs can then be applied to other forms of transportation such as railways or buses. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) states We use layers of security to ensure the security of the traveling public and the Nation's transportation system that include intelligence gathering and analysis, checking passenger manifests against watch lists, random canine team searches at airports, federal air marshals, federal flight deck officers and more security measures both visible and invisible to the public. Terrorist threats of every form continue to arise; therefore continually assessing the effectiveness of aviation security is the only way to assure that another event like September 11, 2011 never occurs again. The hypothesis that is being used for this paper is researching deterrence of aviation security measures is the increase in...

...its effect on the security landscape of the United States of America. The Homeland Security Act of 2002 created a new cabinet level department within the executive branch that would be called The Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Since its inception, the Department of Homeland Security has absorbed numerous agencies that had previously fallen under other departments for their importance in performing national security functions. Some of the agencies absorbed by DHS perform minor peripheral national security functions. Others, however, are very well-known agencies that stand on the front lines of American national security, like the United States Coast Guard (USCG), the Secret Service, and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). In this paper, we will examine some of these departments and discuss their roles in national security. Additionally, we will analyze the DHS in the context of successful and unsuccessful national security operations since the Homeland Security Act of 2002 was passed. The Homeland Security Act of 2002 and the Department of Homeland Security Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the US Congress determined the need for a new department within the U.S. government. This department would be responsible for overseeing the protection of American soil, or the American homeland, with a specific emphasis on preventing future terrorist attacks. Senator Joe Lieberman, a democrat from Connecticut and Senator Arlen Specter...

...As a brief description of the subject in the study, the life cycle of logistics can also be maximized through establishing effective management organizing efforts to maintain a certain company’s operational structure that will avoid or prevent errors and mismanagement that can take place within the corporation. In this case, the 360 degree logistics can be found when there will be a capital expenditure that will be carried out to fund materials and human resources that will be helping to manufacture product. As soon as the product will be made and distributed to the market, there will be an exchange of commodity as well as financial trade value. This process will undergo the procedural profit taking to collect the monetary amount of profits that has been sold to the market. The monetary value will be distributed to the accounting department of a certain organization to fund services, raw materials, and salaries to employees that completes the life cycle of the business operating organization. Image is one of the most sensitive factors that should be taken cared in long-term basis for the reason that it can be used for the marketing plan that will promote the company’s products to boost sales to the public as mentioned by Ponstern (2008). Location is one of the most important considerations that will be considered for companies such as Panasonic because it is an electrical distributing company that aims to identify potential target market to maintain their production capacity and...

...Another aspect is, entertainment, from 1965 to 2018, entertainment has changed substantially. Games, a way to escape from reality, consequently portability was always a concern, but in the 21st century access to the internet, and the countless devices have allowed for quick and easy access to veterans and newcomers alike. The effect of this technology, not only rebranded the entire gaming industry, yet the movie industry also was affected by technology’s ‘’magic’’, from the theater itself, how it’s been refurbished to suit our needs, even the places that you can watch cinema have changed. You can enjoy the films in the privacy of your own home, speaking of our home's, exercise… the bane of our existence ( for some people), you still gotta do it though, through technological advancements, no longer will you have to ‘’head to the gym’’ , still due to said advancements...

(Rothman, 1998)says “object to the practice of giving individual investigators, and . . . institutional review boards the right to determine how much discomfort, or temporary disability patients should endure for the purpose of research. Regardless of what controls are used, precisely such a determination must be made concerning the foreseeable adverse effects of the treatment under study and the observation procedures”. 3. Along with the new security measures taking place across the country, TSA continues to improve and refine our processes in order to provide customers with a high level of customer service. 4. Someone says “Dreams are a mirror of our real life”, and that are a reflection of our experiences and situations we’ve lived to in our life at that point. They are a sort of medicine or escape for our mind from our woes in the world. ...Racial profiling is the judging on one’s ethnicity, race and religion so it is understandable on why people see it in that perspective. It is considered wrong to make a hasty generalization on a whole community of people to a certain act due to a few. For example, just because a few black people can’t swim doesn’t mean one person can generalize the community of black folks as people who can’t swim. It is seriously offensive to make claims that might not be true about someone. People have always been told to never judge a book by its cover and this is the prime example. It could be dangerous to assume somebody is a terrorist threat when in reality they are not. Just because they fit the description of past terrorists doesn’t mean we should be looking for those qualities and...

TS and making friends Living successful with TS Not curable, just treatable Natural remission Cases of famous people with TS Conclusion: Reiterate the challenges and underline the resolutions to TS TS can be overcome Hello, my name is Ramon. Today, I will be speaking about Tourette Syndrome or TS, for short. * Before I start going into this, how many of you know or have an idea of what TS is? Raise your hand if you do. For those of you who don’t know what it is, TS is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary motor and/or vocal tics such as eye blinking, throat clearing, sniffing, or even head jerking. * On a side note, if any of you notice me doing any of the mentioned tics, it’s because I myself am diagnosed with TS ever I was 12. Both types of TS often range from mild to severe. Studies show that TS is inherited only 50% of the time. The gene is carried by the parent, but that doesn’t mean that the parent has it as well. Most often, the TS gene skips a generation. * This means that anyone who has TS may have received it due to his/her grandparents. The same study shows that males are three to four times more susceptible to receiving TS than females. In terms of diagnosing, TS can sometimes be elusive. An article I read on tsa-usa.org, which is a foundation dedicated to research for genetics, mentions...

...On a gloomy morning in April of 2006, I sat in the passenger seat of my mom's GMC Yukon, the smell of vanilla and lavender wafted through the air as we pulled into the airport parking garage. As my anxiety began to rise, the darkness of the parking garage became thick. It seemed to swallow the sounds of the radio, the pitterpatter of the rain, and any hope for sunshine, as if it were a sign disaster. We continued to climb the slope until we found a parking spot. I unloaded my bags with deep apprehension, while listening to my mom chatter on about our upcoming flight to Atlanta, Georgia. After several month of planning, I was finally taking a much needed vacation with my family. Unfortunately, due to my oncall work status, my mom and I were forced to fly into Georgia to meetup with the others. Early Friday morning, I received a call from my manager informing me that he needed me work the evening shift. For some reason, the majority of my coworkers decided to pick Friday of all days to call in. I was supposed to be driving to Atlanta with my at noon. “Great!”, I thought. “How was this going to work out?” I knew I needed to talk to the one person that could find resolution to most challenging problems. While dropping my daughter off at my parent’s house, I told my mom about my dilemma. She listened patiently as I told her about my problem. I watched as an impish grin spread her face and knew that I would hate her solution. My mother sugg...

...it understanding waiting lines and figuring out how to manage them is one of the most important areas in operation management. In companies or in private life, there are instances of procedures which generates waiting lines or queues. The reason why these waiting lines occur is for the present services facility is inadequate to provide service at that instance. As an examples when people travel by airplanes, I have personal involvements with numerous types of waiting lines or queues. To buy tickets for a movie, I normally have to stand in line at movie theater ticket office. When I arrive at an airport most of the time I stand in line to check baggage, then I stand in line again to get a seat assignment. After that I line up again for the TSA security checkpoint and the again for the last time when waiting to board the plane to scan the boarding passes. I also wait when I am inside the plane, I wait for those ahead of me to take their seats. And finally, we may wait for baggage to arrive and then for ground transportation. I think this quote is very important and says a lot about waiting lines. “Perhaps the biggest influence on our feelings about lines, though, has to do with our perception of fairness. When it comes to lines, the universally acknowledged standard is first come first served: any deviation is, to most, a mark of iniquity and can lead to violent queue rage. Last month a man was stabbed at a Maryland post office by a fellow customer who mistakenly thought he’d cut...

...Understanding the World after 9-11 Even though we still have Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp there are those who feel that we should close it down and stop the torture for example degrading the person lack of sleep or lack of food and even though it was effective at times to get information out of prisoners by using such techniques though after September 11, 2001 and the media getting pictures of how we was treating these prisoners we had to change, some to the good others are not so good because a prisoner may tell you what you want to hear and it may not be the truth. Then there is still the public inquiring about the prisoners where would we have to transfer them? This scares those who live near a prison, many are terrorist so what should we do? Clean up and make Alcatraz Island also known as the Rock and put them there? From what we have learned that place is no better. Until there is peace throughout all the lands and countries there will and must be safeguards not just for us but for those who are suicide bombers and other terrorist. When someone threatened U.S. interests and safety, the government started thinking up ways to protect the citizens of our beautiful country. This is where the USA Patriot Act came from. The USA Patriot Act was signed into law by former President George W. Bush on October 26, 2001, just a little over a month after the attacks. It is an acronym that stands for, Uniting (and) Strengthening America (by) Providing Appropriate Tools Required...

...American pursuit of freedom that started with the Revolutionary War, a young nation fighting to break away from a nation of strength. Then our battle over land expansion and the taking of the land from the Native Americans, some perceived them as savages or maybe even terrorist. Then we turned to secure our borders to prevent other nations from coming into our nation and grabbing up land. Then our pursuit of freedom expanded the globe and with other nations as we assisted in the attempt to spread democracy in countries struggling to become nations. In this attempt, there have been many enemies formed that despise the US and the pursuit of freedom. This has become a major concern of the US and on September 11, 2001, this concern became a reality. How could something so devastating be carried out against a world-leading nation? What was wrong with the infrastructure and how could it be fixed to prevent other terrorist attacks. The answer was to form a department in the federal government that would have the power to act and the power to share intelligence information. Terrorism and US Threats The FBI defines terrorism as “violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law; appear to be intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; to influence the policy if a government by intimidation or coercion; or to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping.” (FBI.GOV, 2015) The definition further defines...

...News! 1. 6/6/2013 Doug Gross. * Barack Obama believes that there should be internet access in all schools. He wants to provide funds to around 99% of public schools for them to be able to have internet, even in libraries. He says that he wants all American students to be connected online in five years. Usually, adults don’t go for this type of thing they want children to not be so ‘connected’ to the internet. They want kids to not spend so much time on computers, but he almost wants just that to happen. People are becoming way too dependent on computers and the internet, which even libraries are eventually only going to be used just for that. Although Obama is more so moderate, this idea is clearly making him to be a liberal. He wants the change and wants to continue to further the change on technology. 2. 6/8/2013 Maureen Dowd * In this article, she quotes the book 1984. She is talking about how Bush felt about 9/11 and some of the after effects. It turns out that, for seven years the N.S.A was taking information from our phone calls. This all started while Bush was president through a program called prism. Prism would let the F.B.I. and N.S.A. into many social media websites and was able to access all of our information. These people were trying to spot out terrorists, and will go to any means necessary. According to Obama, they necessarily can’t hear the conversations; they are just able to learn about who we call. They also are saying that they don’t...
