...Hip-Hop is a cultural movement that was formed during the 1970’s among African American youths residing in the South Bronx in New York City. Hip-hop is characterized by four distinct elements, all of which represent the different manifestation of the culture; oral, aural, physical and visual. The term is often used in a restrictive fashion as synonymous only with the oral practice of rap music. The origin of the hip-hop cultures stems from the block parties of the Ghetto brothers, when they plugged the amps for their instruments and speakers into the lampposts on 163rd street and Prospect Avenue; and used music to break down racial barriers. Since 1970’s hip hop has spread to both urban and suburban communities throughout the world. Hip-hop music first emerged when contemporary disc jockeys and imitators creating rhythmic beats by emphasizing a percussive pattern. It was later accompanied by a rhythmic style of chanting or poetry often presented in 16-bar measures or time frames, and beat boxing, a vocal technique mainly used to provide percussive elements of music and various technical effects of hip hop DJs. In the early days of Hip hop young partygoers initially recited popular phrases and used the slang of the day. It was fashionably for DJ to acknowledge people who were in attendance at a party. Early raps featured someone shouting over instrumental break, which would usually evoke a response from the crowd. Rap caught on because it offered young urban New Yorkers...

...According to an online source, hip hop music consists of rhythmic musical styling accompanied with rapping. The most prominent artists from the hip-hop world in the nineteen-nineties were Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. With Tupac Shakur hailing from the West Coast in California and The Notorious B.I.G. hailing from the East-Coast in New York City, both of their music created a sort of East/West Coast hip-hop rivalry. Their catchy tunes of rap songs like “Dear Mama” by Shakur and “Hypnotize” by The Notorious B.I.G. influenced future artists and society by making music with catchy hooks and rhymes universal for many genres. These two artists from the nineties also based a lot of their music on their location (which created the East-West Coast rivalry) which would soon inspire future rappers and artists to do the same. No matter how inspiring Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. came out to be, their successful careers in the hip-hop industry quickly came to a halt with a similar unfortunate fate. Both Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. were both murdered by drive-by shootings. No one is sure why the murders took place, some say it might have been due to their affiliation with the gangster-rap sub-genre of hip-hop or maybe it might have been due to the strong musical rivalry between the East and West coast. Although some sources do believe...

...WHAT IS HIP HOP? By: Mohammed Al-Salem Hip Hop is a cultural movement that developed in New York in the 1970’s, primarily for the African-American and Latino population. Hip Hop consists of four elements; MCing, deejaying, graffiti art and breaking (b-boy/b-girl). The cultural pillars that Hip Hop is founded on are comedy, rivalry, nursery rhymes, storytelling, poetry, and rhyming tendencies in humans. Hip Hop was born in the South Bronx at a summer block party. The father of Hip Hop, DJ Clive “Kool Herc” Campbell is a Jamaican that built upon the Jamaican tradition of toasting. Toasting is rapping the impromptu poetry over music, with this tradition in mind DJ Kool Herc created the blueprint for Hip Hop music as he began to isolate the instrumental portion of the record, creating the break beat; an isolation of one particular section of a musical composition to have a vamp for an MC or b-boy/b-girl. He then added another turntable and bought two copies of the same record to elongate the break beat – this technique is the foundation of Hip Hop and eventually led to the deejaying styles of a pair of legendary deejays, Afrika Bambaataa and Grand Master Flash. Since the first rap record in 1979, “Rapper’s Delight” by Sugar Hill Gang, Hip Hop as a culture has grown immensely and is continuously spreading around the world influencing so many lives. However, before Hip Hop music even existed there were music genres like jazz, rhythm and blues, soul and funk that have...
