...close from those who are far away, buy they also keep you far away from those who are close. Good morning members of the jury, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Elena Saravia Garza, and today I will talk to you about doing something more interesting than watching your TV. American teenagers spend more than seven hours each day using devices, when that should be the total time in a week. That means half their waking time. If you ask someone what are the most important things in their lifes, their family and friends would probably be near or at the top of the list, but instead of spending most of their free time with them, they spend it using gadgets. Spending a lot of time in devices can lead to serious consequences, like obesity, cancer, heart troubles, damaged eyesight, diabetes, sleep dificulties, decreased attention span, limited brain growth, autism along with others. Most people have fences and locks on their doors because they don’t want theifs to rob them, but the gadgets that rob our time, people welcome them into their homes and even would build a special room for them. A recent study made by sociologists of Maryland University cuncludes that unhappy people spend more time watching TV, while people who consider themselves happy dedicate more time to read and socialize. Life is meant to be lived, not to be watched....

...will bear more tomatoes than in the summers past. In conclusion the plants grew more tomatoes once the old soil was replaced with new soil. As you can see in the graph below after doing this experiment my hypothesis was supported and my predictions were correct that with new fresh soil the plants would grow a lot more tomatoes. For my second experiment using scientific method with an everyday life situation I observed that everyday the TV in my kids’ room turns off on its own. I started to question if my kids were turning the TV off without me knowing or if the TV was starting to go bad or lastly if there was a problem with the outlet I have it plugged into. I began to start my hypothesis wondering if I needed to replace the TV or if I needed to have my landlord test the outlets electrical strength. I decided to check the electrical outlet first by plugging the TV into a different outlet for the day to see if it would turn off or stay on as long as I didn’t turn it off myself. Taking all this into consideration I predicted that the TV was...

...Violence is not something new to the human race, but it is an increasing problem in modern society. In his essay “Hate Violence? Turn It Off,” Tim Goodman argues that if parents or other adults object to a television program, they should change the channel or just simply turn off the television. I disagree with Goodman’s argument. Turning off the television or changing the channel is not enough. What happens when the adults are not there to supervise their kids? What about other influences that promotes or shows violence? What then? Can a concern, such as violence be simply turn off or change? When children are young, the television already begins to have an influence in their life. If we were to look at any typical family household, we...

...However, there were difficulties most, for example nobody around me would give try to assist me with completing the 48 hours. I would go into the living room during the morning to find a family member watching TV and/or playing on their tablet/laptop. When I had suggested she turned off the TV I received a rather distasteful look. At first I was convinced she was watching something important to her, but the situation repeated after I returned from work. I was dumbfounded that nobody in my household was willing to turn off the TV, tablet, laptop or radio for the few hours or minutes that I was actually at the house.Leaving me isolated within my room. It wasn't until I was at work I understood the difficulty of escaping all forms of media. ...Television Life in North American is now divided into sleeping, working and watching TV. North America is a TV culture in which the make believe stories projected from a small box become what define us. TV reflects as well as shapes our cultural expectations and norms. TV has brought about revolution in many, if not all areas of life, no one can say that their work, family life, leisure time, and school are not in some way influenced by television. TV, its values, moral messages and the lifestyle it promotes all have a serious, negative impact upon children. Watching television is one of the ways many people choose to unwind after a hard day’s work. While television is a major source of entertainment the content the things that are displayed including violence and adult content in television can have negative effects on the viewers. Many children end up watching television even before they start school and so television has a huge impact on their impressionable minds. “Even infants and toddlers watch around two hours of television per day”(Levine). For kids under the age of six the time spent in front of the television is also around two hours while kids and teens tend to spend as much as four hours in front of the television. The violence depicted on television has a major effect on children. “On an average, American children witness around 200,000 acts of violence in television by the time they turn 18”(Odec). This makes them less sensitive and increases their aggressiveness since...

...popularity is a huge problem because it has gotten to the point where no one questions its educational values. Currently as of June 19th, not a single article was found exposing about the negative aspects of Pororo. Mothers turn on Pororo for their kids, in the hope that it will have educational benefits. However, contrary to many mothers’ belief, Pororo can have some negative effects on children’s education in terms of intellectual, physical/social, and emotional development. First of all, Pororo can have a negative effect on a child’s intellectual development. Watching TV affects children’s brain activity to become passive towards learning. Studies show that watching TV reduces alpha waves, which is associated with relaxed meditative states. This creates “mind fog” state which means people feel it’s harder to concentrate and stay focused, like daydreaming (Carmichael). Thus if children watch the Pororo animation for a long time, their mind will be at a mental fog state which will make them harder to focus. This will lead to shortened attention span and even to attention disorder. There are already 1 numerous studies proving the link between TV addiction and ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. According to research, one hour increase in TV watching increases the probability of developing ADHD by 10% (qtd. in Song). ADHD...

...Mildred and Society Phillips Have you ever thought about how society may look in the future? In the novel, Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, Mildred is the wife of the main character Guy Montag. Society has made Mildred self-centered, unfeeling, and robotic. First, Mildred is self-centered. She wouldn’t give Montag an aspirin or turn down the TV for him. In the text it states,”Will you bring me aspirin and water?’ ‘You’ve got to get up,’ she said ‘It’s noon. You’ve slept five hours later than usual.’ ‘Will you turn the parlor off?’ he asked. ‘That’s my family,’ ‘Will you turn it off for a sick man?’ ‘I’ll turn it down’.” Mildred is this way because as Beatty says in his speech all people want is to be entertained. In the text it states,”Don’t we keep them moving, don’t we give them...
