...A History of the Origins of Television For the first half of the twentieth century, the dominant media in western society had been newspapers, radio and cinema. Then, in the early 1920s, a man named John Logie Baird created the first television, which has since become the dominant media of the second half of the twentieth century. Television has had an immense impact on human society in many forms including sociality, knowledge, experience and leisure. After the first experimental broadcasts in America in the 1920s, the British Broadcasting Corporation was set up in 1922, however television broadcasting did not begin until 1936 when an estimated 23,000 people saw the first broadcasts. In 1939 television had ceased and was described as something that would amount to nothing. During the war the radio was extremely popular and this was the case for several years after as television sets were expensive and had limited broadcasting hours with poor receptions. The BBC was dominated by their director general, John Reith, who had negotiated a position where the BBC was independent from both the government and free from the pressures of market forces. For the BBC had an assured income from all those who owned radio receivers. Reith had established a corporation with aims to inform, educate and entertain the public as a whole, making available cultural experiences that they would otherwise not have seen [HOLLAND, 1997: Page 8]. Up until the 1950s the BBC had a monopoly on...

...Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential African American women in U.S. history. When she was young, Winfrey was separated from her parent and had to live in a poor surrounding with her grandparent. Having to live with many hardships, Oprah Winfrey was able to turn her life over and achieve many outstanding achievements. According to Adler’s theory in birth order, “only child will tend not to lose primacy and power, besides, he or she will mature at an early stage of life and may have certain issues where they are not in centre of attention.” Based on Adler’s theory in birth order, I believe that Oprah Winfrey did not lose faith after all the hardships she had been through. Consequently, this had brought great results in her future life. At a young age, many difficulties were brought upon Oprah Winfrey. At the age of six, Winfrey had to live in a poor surrounding with her grandmother: “her parents were separated from each other and she had been put to a very poor environment with her grandparents when she was six.” But when her grandmother had gotten ill, she had to move to Wisconsin to live with her mother. Thereafter, Winfrey had endured many hardships in which include having to be sexually abused by her male relatives. After Oprah Winfrey finished third grade, she moved out to live with her father and stepmother in Nashville Tennessee. Due to the fact that her father and stepmother were unable to have a child also being that Oprah was the only child, they treated her...

INTRODUCTION BRIEF HISTORY OF THE INDIAN TWO-WHEELER INDUSTRY: In the 50s the two wheeler segment was largely dominated by Automobile Products of India (API) and Enfield. Later on towards the end of the 50s Bajaj Autos began importing Vespa scooters from the Italian company Piaggio. In the following decades, the automobile industry in India was mainly dominated by scooters with API and later Bajaj dominating the market. There were very few products and choices available as far as motorcycle is concerned and Enfield bullet and Rajdoot dominated the market. The 80s saw the entry of Japanese companies in the Indian market with the opening up of the market to foreign companies. Hero Honda and TVS Suzuki are companies formed in this era of market reform. The market was still predominantly scooter dominated and Bajaj and LML were the leading brands producing two-wheelers at that time. Scooter was viewed as a more family and utility friendly vehicle than motorcycle and hence was preferred. The Japanese companies not only collaborated with Indian companies to produce the already existing products but also brought in new technology as a result of which the ever conquering 100cc...

...MTV Networks President Bob Pittman asked Nickelodeon general manager Geraldine Laybourne to develop programming to fill the time period that would be vacated (once A&E became a separate channel in January 1985, Nickelodeon simply displayed a test pattern screen after the network signed off). After futile attempts at original program development, Laybourne asked programming and branding consultants Alan Goodman and Fred Seibert of Fred/Alan Inc. (successful as the original branders of MTV, and for Nickelodeon's extensive 1984 rebranding) to come up with programming ideas. After being presented with over 200 episodes of The Donna Reed Show (a 1950s sitcom which Laybourne despised), Goodman and Seibert conceived the idea of the "first oldies TV network." They modeled the new evening and overnight programming block on the successful oldies radio format, "The Greatest Hits of All Time," and branded the block with their next evolution of MTV- and Nickelodeon-style imagery and bumpers. Head programmer Debby Beece led the team to the name "Nick at Nite" for the new block; a logo originally conceived for the block was based on Nickelodeon's "pinball" logo introduced in 1981, which was discontinued with that network's rebrand. Fred/Alan developed the original logo with Tom Corey and Scott Nash of Boston advertising firm Corey McPherson Nash, creators of the well-recognized Nickelodeon orange logo (Nick at Nite's logo design would maintain a separate visual...

...Trial and Verdict Arquisa Ross Dorothy Sliben Into to Criminal Justice 02/28/2015 Contentious Teacher Related Policies Moving From Legislatures to the Courts National teacher unions won a landmark victory in a California lawsuit last year that challenged tenure protections, a case that became the beginning of a national effort to roll back teacher tenure laws in state courts. Teaching professions are shifting from legislative arenas to the courts giving judges the chance to make decisions that could shape the way teachers are hired, fired, and paid. Lawsuits show that two of the nation’s most contentious battles over the teaching professions. Now some of the largest unions in the country are using similar tactics to end test based evaluations, teachers say that they are arbitrary and unfair. Teachers are turning to the courts to fight for one of their most pressing interests. A lot of the teachers have come together stating that there’s nothing wrong with teacher evaluations when done right. President of the National Education Association the nation’s largest teachers union which has helped argue the case in Florida and Tennessee. Many of the lawsuits says that were widespread errors in the new evaluations because of a rushed rollout and faulty data including incomplete or wrong test scores and some teachers were docked due to absences which should’ve been protected under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act. Many of the teachers has stepped up and said “ It’s...

...Strategic Perspective and Ethics Key Issue The key issue involving Tesla Motors is the organizations approach to marketing their product and social mission. The fundamental idea behind the company’s existence is to create vehicles that require sustainable energy as oppose to fossil fuel dependency. The demand for their products is built on the zoom out, bigger picture idea that consumers will eventually switch from the current fossil fuel powered cars to alternative energy powered cars in the future (Kanter, 114). The founder and current Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk, created this organization based on his long term vision that the future of automobiles requires a less oil dependent vehicle. Tesla Motors has consistently reported losses since implementation but the growth and popularity of the organization is based on the future potential and not present success. Shareholders and those involved will eventually want to see real results for them to continue to support Musks bigger picture (Kanter, 114). By non-GAAP standards the company has reported an expectation to create positive earnings and cash flow by early 2016 but previously the company has failed to meet short term expectations (https://hbr.org/2015/05/teslas-not-as-disruptive-as-you-might-think). The lack of profit stems from a combination of dismal efforts to reach more consumers and generate awareness, the costs associated to purchase a vehicle and Teslas approach to marketing and generating sales. Tesla Motors...
