Blood Suckers to Love Suckers

Growing up as a kid, Vampires always used to scare me. Even on Halloween when parents would answer the front door I would run away. However, when I watching Twilight, I realized that this movie was more romantic than scary. I have seen other vampire movies such as, Dracula, Mom’s got a Date with a Vampire, and even Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire and those were scarier than twilight. Although I believe the United States of America is the greatest country, I personally believe that there is a case where there is softening in America. Last year, I took an elective class for my senior year that was called, Issues in Modern America. A couple of my friends and I decided instead of the weekly blog post we would do a weekly video podcast. One of our topics for the podcast was the weakening of America. At first, I didn’t think this was an issue, but then I looked at the way we as children grew up and how my parents grew up. There were two words that can easily separate my parents and I and how we got punished as a kid. For me it was getting grounded, not so bad. For my parents, it was the wooden spoon. “Swift flick of the wrist with a wooden spoon to the head if something wasn’t done right.” My dad would always tell me. Although getting beat with a wooden spoon and vampires could not be more opposite, I thought about the podcast me and my friends did and thought, “why are vampires now all about feelings and are not focusing on ‘I want to suck your blood’?” I believe that the softening of America has led the population who know about Twilight to believe that vampires can now have a false sense of emotions. The Disney Channel original movie Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire was a movie my sister and I would watch as kids around Halloween time. Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire premiered on Disney Channel in the year 2000 and I still vividly sitting down on the couch and watching the movie. I personally never did well with scary movies and would often have nightmares as a kid and I could personally say that a Disney Channel movie gave me nightmares. Yes, I am a college student now and have matured from scary movies but yet not at one point was I ever scared in the movie. Even though Twilight was very popular and made about $392,616,625 in the box office according to Wikipedia, I feel that vampire movies weren’t very well represented in how scary vampires should be. Even though I believe that vampire movies should be more scary than romantic, others may believe that since this vampire movie was so successful that vampires should now be seen as people who understand feelings. “After much research, Bella eventually discovers that Edward is a vampire, though he only consumes animal blood. The pair fall in love, and Edward introduces Bella to his vampire family, Carlisle, Esme, Alice, Jasper, Emmett, and Rosalie.” (Wikipedia) Could bringing love and relationships into vampires bring more success and more popularity to vampires? From the box office numbers, I believe so. Could this also affect the way vampires are looked at by levels of scary? From my point of views and from what I have seen from my friends from where I grew up, I also believe so. Myself personally, I believe that vampire movies are meant to be scary and meant to be violent. Although Twilight smashed the box office and was one of the most popular movies since it came out, I did not like the change of vampire personality. I believe that Catherine Hardwicke changed the persona of vampires because of the way that our society has developed since the last vampire thriller. Even though the weakening of America does not directly connect to Twilight, Hardwicke created characters to be loved by the audience and changed the way that vampires are looked at from now on. Even though team Jacob and team Edward is more popular than team Dracula, I believe that vampires are meant to be scary and not meant to be emotional love suckers.

Internet Marketing Lessons

...65 Lessons Learned Over 12 Years Of Being In IM So this is the list I wish I had when I first got started...... 1. You have a lot more power than you think. And don't let anyone tell you differently. Power simply means "the ability to act" and all of you possess this. You just have to decide to use it. Power is like the muscle, the more action you take, the easier it gets. Science has already proven this to be true as the neural strands in your brain get thicker the more you do certain things. 2. When I first got started I wish someone would have held a gun to my head and advised me "look, you're going to focus on ONE thing at a time and master it before you move onto the next". Focus isn't just a word, it's the ability to keep your eye on what you want to accomplish so any obstacles you see will be ignored. Ok, "master" is probably too strong of a word. For example, when I first started using PPC advertising (Pay-Per-Click) many years ago I was losing money for over 2 straight months because I didn't know how to test my campaigns. So I invested in a solid PPC course by Perry Marshall and studied it. I started small and then reinvested my profits. 3. The first thing anyone should do is get clarity on what they really want. Making 10k per month is not a real goal. It's good to have, but if you don't become CRYSTAL clear on the WHY behind that goal, you're going to let obstacles kick your butt. Wanting money never got me anywhere. Now spending time with my loved ones and telling...

...just before winter break, which is coming up. Ok. So, before you read this, you should know that I already asked Mr. McMurtry if I could write my fiction project in an experimental science fiction style and make lots of horrible, malicious, false, and hateful blood libels against the Mormons, and he asked what I had in mind, and I told him that I thought it could be cool to write a story that consisted entirely of a War between Mormons and Scientologists and Atheist Texan Cowboys in the Future, and he said that would be fine. I knew he’d let me do it, as his homosexuality is a well known fact to the student body, and therefore his concomitant openness to avant-guard art and literature and experimentation and stuff like that. Not like the other English teacher, Ms. Nichols, who is the sort of totally sexless spinster that makes her students write poems about Jesus, which I’m pretty sure is fucking illegal, although I’m sure nobody in this hick town cares. God and Football, all the way. Ok, so, then I didn’t do any work on it at all until last night. We had to do a one-page outline a few weeks ago, which is so stupid, so I did it on the bus and I have no idea what I wrote, so last night I just started over from scratch. Anyway, last night, I thought, hey, why not post it on the forums and see what people on the forums think about it? And then, I had the absolute coolest idea. What if, when I hand in the final copy, I hand in the entire thread as my story? My story would...

Short Stories

...Santos: The Day The Dancers Came AS soon as Fil woke up, he noticed a whiteness outside, quite unusual for the November mornings they had been having. That fall, Chicago was sandman's town, sleepy valley, drowsy gray, slumberous mistiness from sunup till noon when the clouds drifted away in cauliflower clusters and suddenly it was evening. The lights shone on the avenues like soiled lamps centuries old and the skyscrapers became monsters with a thousand sore eyes. Now there was a brightness in the air land Fil knew what it was and he shouted, "Snow! It's snowing!" Tony, who slept in the adjoining room, was awakened. "What's that?" he asked. "It's snowing," Fil said, smiling to himself as if he had ordered this and was satisfied with the prompt delivery. "Oh, they'll love this, they'll love this." "Who'll love that?" Tony asked, his voice raised in annoyance. "The dancers, of course," Fil answered. "They're arriving today. Maybe they've already arrived. They'll walk in the snow and love it. Their first snow, I'm sure." "How do you know it wasn't snowing in New York while they were there?" Tony asked. "Snow in New York in early November?" Fil said. "Are you crazy?" "Who's crazy?" Tony replied. "Ever since you heard of those dancers from the Philippines, you've been acting nuts. Loco. As if they're coming here just for you. Tony chuckled. Hearing him, Fil blushed, realizing that he had, indeed, been acting too eager, but Tony had said it. It felt that way--as if the dancers...

...one more minute of this. The band was starting up, a slow dance. He was still staring at her, drinking her in. Those green eyes darkening, going black with desire. She had the sudden feeling that he might jerk her to him and kiss her hard, without ever saying a word. "Would you like to dance?" she said softly. I'm playing with fire, with something I don't understand, she thought suddenly. And in that instant she realized that she was frightened. Her heart began to pound violently. It was as if those green eyes spoke to some part of her that was buried deep beneath the surface—and that part was screaming "danger" at her. Some instinct older than civilization was telling her to run, to flee. She didn't move. Don't miss these exciting books from HarperPaperbacks! THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: A TRILOGY L. J. New Start

...On my right, a dark forest worthy of the Brothers Grimm. On my left, a cemetery edged in a weathered wrought iron fence. I think there were more than two hundred headstones. More dead than living. Nice. There must be some mistake. I came here to start over. Could a new life be hiding behind the unappealing rural exterior? My promised house remained a mystery. I double-checked the notebook with my father’s scrawled directions resting on the passenger’s seat next to me. Technically, I’d lived in Red Grove as a child, but we’d moved before I turned two. I didn’t remember the town at all or the residents, living or dead. I shifted my attention back to my driving. “Holy shit!” I proclaimed as I overcorrected the wheel, and my foot drifted from the gas. The man on the side of the road was so attractive I could’ve died—literally. He was planting something. A tree, I think. Every time his shovel hit the dirt, a ripple coursed through his shoulders and down his stomach. I raised an eyebrow at the glint of sun on tanned, shirtless skin. Dark hair, low slung jeans. I tried not to gawk, but the best I could do was to keep my head inside the window. I was thinking he belonged in a museum, a chiseled-by-the-gods man museum, when my brain was hijacked. I forgot about the road. I forgot where I was going. A fantasy hit me so fast and hard, it could’ve been a memory. We were in the shower. I stood behind him, my arms wrapped around his torso, rubbing lather circles...

If I Stay

...FOR NICK Finally . . . Always 7:09 A.M. Everyone thinks it was because of the snow. And in a way, I suppose that’s true. I wake up this morning to a thin blanket of white covering our front lawn. It isn’t even an inch, but in this part of Oregon a slight dusting brings everything to a standstill as the one snowplow in the county gets busy clearing the roads. It is wet water that drops from the sky—and drops and drops and drops—not the frozen kind. It is enough snow to cancel school. My little brother, Teddy, lets out a war whoop when Mom’s AM radio announces the closures. “Snow day!” he bellows. “Dad, let’s go make a snowman.” My dad smiles and taps on his pipe. He started smoking one recently as part of this whole 1950s, Father Knows Best retro kick he is on. He also wears bow ties. I am never quite clear on whether all this is sartorial or sardonic—Dad’s way of announcing that he used to be a punker but is now a middle-school English teacher, or if becoming a teacher has actually turned my dad into this genuine throwback. But I like the smell of the pipe tobacco. It is sweet and smoky, and reminds me of winters and woodstoves. “You can make a valiant try,” Dad tells Teddy. “But it’s hardly sticking to the roads. Maybe you should consider a snow amoeba.” I can tell Dad is happy. Barely an inch of snow means that all the schools in the county are closed, including my high school and the middle school where Dad works, so it’s an unexpected day off for him, too. My mother, who...

The Satanic Verses

...Jahilia VII The Angel Azraeel VIII The Parting of the Arabian Seas IX A Wonderful Lamp Satan, being thus confined to a vagabond, wandering, unsettled condition, is without any certain abode; for though he has, in consequence of his angelic nature, a kind of empire in the liquid waste or air, yet this is certainly part of his punishment, that he is . . . without any fixed place, or space, allowed him to rest the sole of his foot upon. Daniel Defoe, _The History of the Devil_ I The Angel Gibreel "To be born again," sang Gibreel Farishta tumbling from the heavens, "first you have to die. Hoji! Hoji! To land upon the bosomy earth, first one needs to fly. Tat-taa! Taka-thun! How to ever smile again, if first you won't cry? How to win the darling's love, mister, without a sigh? Baba, if you want to get born again . . ." Just before dawn one winter's morning, New Year's Day or thereabouts, two real, full-grown, living men fell from a great height, twenty-nine thousand and two feet, towards the English Channel, without benefit of parachutes or wings, out of a clear sky. "I tell you, you must die, I tell you, I tell you," and thusly and so beneath a moon of alabaster until a loud cry crossed the night,...
