...Corporate Finance 2 March, 2015 Case 26 – Star River Electronics Ltd. Introduction Star River Electronics is a joint venture between England’s Starlight Electronics Ltd. and an Asian venture-capital firm, New Era Partners. Star River Electronics is based in Singapore, and its mission was to manufacture CD-ROMs as a supplier to major software companies. Star River Electronics has gained fame in the industry for producing high quality discs. As the optical and multimedia products became more and more popular in the mid-1990s, CD-ROM manufacturing industry experienced rapid growth during this time. Due to this effect, small manufacturers overreacted, creating oversupply that pushed prices down by as much as 40%. Consolidation followed as less efficient producers went out of business. Because of its superior reputation, Star River was able to survive the shakeout. While other CD-ROM manufacturers floundered, Star River’s volume of sales grew at a robust rate in the past two years. Unit prices, however, had declined because of increasing competition in the market and the growing popularity of substitute products, especially digital video discs (DVDs). DVDs had 14 times larger storage capacity and is a threat to displace CD-ROMs. Although, CD-ROMs still comprised 93 percent of all optical-disc-drive shipments in 1999, a study predicted that this number would fall to 41% by 2005, while DVD drives would fill the remaining 59%. Star River Electronics had begun to experiment with DVD...

...better than the competition. Nowadays most firms have adopted this marketing concept but it’s not always the case. The philosophy of this concept came around after World War II, when people had to be selective with the products they brought and only buy the ones that meet their needs and requirements but to businesses these would not always be obvious. Now companies have to always keep customers in mind when thinking of a product and the market is so competitive you will need to be the best product out there in that market to have the most chance of being brought. Three simple questions are often used when businesses decided to come up with a new product; what do customers want? Can we develop it while they still want it? How can we keep our customers satisfied? All being very good and valid questions to ask which will help to increase customer satisfaction as they are always in their minds. The two businesses I have chosen to use in order to compare and contrast their marketing techniques are; River island and McDonalds. River Island Marketing Objectives Organisational Aims and Objectives- As quoted by the official river island website “To bring new and original fashion to you, with great design at the heart of everything we create. Our customers can rely on us for great going-out looks and occasion wear, amazing denim and fabulous bags and shoes. We...

...Mormon Exodus Since the founding of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Joseph Smith on April 6, 1830, its members were often treated harshly by others, due to their beliefs. Such persecution followed the church as they were forced to vacate one state after the next leading to the members settling in and founding Nauvoo, Illinois. Having a population rivaling Chicago at the time, the financial success of the church and its members, polygamy, and a well-armed militia, fueled the intolerance of Mormons in the region. Church leadership was forced to announce they would leave Nauvoo and go west, after the burning of two hundred Mormon homes and farm buildings in 1845, and mob violence in 1846. Due to unforeseen difficulties the trek west was split off into two sections: they would travel in wagon trains from Nauvoo, Illinois to Omaha, Nebraska in 1846; and, Omaha to the Salt Lake Valley of Utah in 1847. By 1856, the number of converts traveling to the valley reached a point that wagon trains were too expensive and the church leader at the time, Brigham Young, decided that handcarts would be cheaper, and faster for such a large number of converts to reach the valley. The first trek starting in February of 1846 from Nauvoo, Illinois to Omaha, Nebraska was much harsher due to death and tragedy resulting from black scurvy, Cholera, Typhoid Fever, Tuberculosis, and maternal deaths, and the weakening of the body and mind by stress, while February marked harsh weather and...

...Merck- River Blindness Case Analysis Section 1: Introduction and situational analysis: Merck is an American-based international pharmaceutical company with a history that spans almost 350 years. The company focuses on innovative research and consumer education. (Demand Media, 1999-2011 ) In 1950, George W. Merck, then the chairman of the company said, “We try never to forget that medicine is for people. It is not for the profits. The profits follow, and if we have remembered that, they have never failed to appear. The better we have remembered that, the larger they have been.” This philosophy was at the core of Merck and Co.’s values system. (Kreitner, 2010) In 1978, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that over 300,000 people were blind and another 18 million were affected with a disease called onchocerciasis, better known as river blindness. River blindness was caused by parasitic worms that was spread by small black flies the breed in and lived around fast moving rivers mostly in developing countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. The parasitic larvae were transferred to humans when bitten by the small black flies, at which time the parasitic larvae would infect the host. The worms would begin to reproduce producing millions of microscopic baby worms into the person’s body. This would eventually lead to gross deformity, severe itching that in some cases cause people to commit suicide and eventually blindness. At the time, the disease had...

...Merck & Company Project Selection Decision Introduction As Merck & Company’s lead project manager I have to decide whether to invest its resources in one of two projects. One project is to pursue a cure for river blindness, a disease that has plagued third world countries for a number of years now and the second project is to re-package a very popular and profitable anti-depression drug for the Western market. In this concise report I plan to look at both options through SWOT analysis. I will be drawing on other relevant project selection strategy and making an informed decision from the analysis conducted. Merck & Company was founded on “medicine for the people”. This statement from George W. Merck, the company founder’s son and former chairman has not always sat comfortably with all senior executives within the business. He had a strong sense of morality within business and that philosophy has seen the company to where it is today. Discussion The case to pursue with the project to cure river blindness raises a number of questions. When comparing the two I am going to look at what decision is best for the company to align its business strategy with the project selection. | River Blindness Project | | Anti-Depression Repackaging Project | Investment | $2,000,000 | | $500,000 | Annual Savings | $50,000 | | $500,000 | | | | | Payback Period | 40 years | | 1 year | Looking at Financial models, in this case it is clear that repackaging...

...Rafting Consultation When considering options to choose when starting a whitewater rafting business, one can become overwhelmed by the number of laws and regulations in place that must be followed and which can limit other decisions for the location and running of the business. Insurance laws and land use regulations vary from state to state; both of these will have a significant impact on how a company conducts business. Real property and personal property laws also vary between the states and play a significant role in business decisions. Research into insurance laws, environmental regulations, and the impact of real versus personal property laws in states considered for business operations is paramount to a successful business venture. Real and personal property acquisition A whitewater rafting business requires operating from the ground up. In searching for the best place suited to start up this business three sites where chosen, the Nolichucky River in North Carolina, the Chattooga River in South Carolina, and the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon in Arizona. There are two kinds of property, personal and real. Personal property in all three states is classified as movable. Mobile homes are classed as personal property and may be acquired with minimal formality. According to all state laws, mobile homes as personal property depreciate in value. Real property is immovable or attached to the land and the civil law protects the status of real property in real estate...

...arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between Arizona and Nevada. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and it was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result involving thousands of workers and unfortunately cost over one hundred lives. The dam was controversially named after President Herbert Hoover. The center of Boulder City, Elm Street, had been surrounded by the Grace Community Church. Reverend Thomas Stevenson was sure of delivering forgiveness to the town over the corruption of the project of the reservation. Most likely it would gather many citizens of Nevada, but mostly to prove if Tom Stevenson was part of it, then it had to be done. Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The fervid summer weather and the lack of facilitates near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned over the dam to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule. The dam's generators...

...was build up with mud and clay. This land was located between two main rivers. These rivers were called Tigris and Euphrates rivers. These two rivers are born in the mountains, and then pass throughout bumpy savanna and cross the plains were the Mesopotamians stablish. The rivers start together then run parallel to finish at the same place. The climate is really dry, for this reason the rivers lost a lot of water by evaporation. The rivers receive most of the water by winter’s rainfalls. The Tigris River is shorter then the Euphrates River but it was really useful to the Mesopotamian because it was deeper. The Mesopotamians learned to use the fresh flowing water to irrigate crops and as a mode of transportation. The Mesopotamian learned how to use the water for the crops. They also learn how to build boats to become fisherman. Mesopotamian people have rich soil and a warm climate. This allowed the Mesopotamians there to move from hunter-gatherers to cultured society. Part B Potato is a good method of diffusion among early human societies. Two hundred and thirty- five kinds of potato were established first in South America Andes Mountains. Potatoes extent around the world and turn out to be a primary food in some places because it can grow without difficulty in severe weather and contains very much nutritious. ...polluters of the Pasig River. It was its bread plant in Sta. Mesa, Manila that discharged a heavy load of water waste due to their unfinished waste water treatment facility on the Pasig River that triggered the SPM in giving them the award. Under the Executive Order No. 192, series of 1987, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was mandated as the primary government agency possible for the sustainable management and development of the country’s natural resources. Together with Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), they carry out regulatory and law-enforced functions with provisions on environmental management, particularly on water quality monitoring, conservation of natural resources, and community-based natural resource management. 2 / 18 One of the most looked after body of water both by the DENR and LLDA here in the Philippines is none other than the infamous Pasig River. The river, which stretches for 25 kilometers from Laguna de Bay to Manila Bay, serves as a major transport route, source of water, and lifeline of Laguna de Bay (one of the biggest freshwater lakes in the world) as such it is a vital ecosystem and an irreplaceable natural resource. However, due to negligence and industrial development, the river has become much polluted and is considered dead (unable to sustain life) by ecologists. Due to this growing problem, the Sagip Pasig Movement was created to take care and literally save the river from peril. Sagip...

These rules included a limit on the amount of cargo that could be carried, how it was stored and loaded and also set guidelines on the number and quality of the crew. These policies and the conditions surrounding them, meant that the insurance companies had a great deal of power over how the vessel was managed. Captains would often see this outside influence as an infringement on their freedom to operate their steamer in the manner they thought best. Despite this many gritted their teeth for the security that the insurance company alleged to...
