Winning Time
The Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs have kicked off the NBA Finals in what appeared to be one of the greatest series ever. The Spurs were looking for revenge after last year’s heartbreaking defeat after being up 3-2 in the series. In game 6 of last year’s NBA Finals the Spurs looked to have it in control as Tony Parker hit a couple big shots for the Spurs with a two possession lead under a minute to play. But just when you thought the Heat were out and fans were exiting from American Airlines Arena, something special happened. LeBron James hit a huge three pointer to bring the Heat back within 2 and then Kowhai Leonard missed 1 out of 2 free throws to give the Spurs a 3 point lead with just under 20 seconds left to play. Running back on defense everybody in the world knows LeBron is taking this shot and going to try and tie the game to send it to overtime. LeBron misses; the rebound goes to Chris Bosh as he kicks it out to Ray Allen, with Mike Breen on the call as he would say “BANG, TIE GAME.” Ray Allen tied the game with 5 seconds left and from that point on everybody knew the Heat were going to win and tie up the series and eventually win in game 7. Miami would go on to be back to back champions of the NBA.
This year however doesn’t seem to be that easy at all as the Spurs are up a commanding 3-1 lead with game 5 back in San Antonio on Sunday night. You could argue on which has been better, whether it’s been the Spurs offense or defense. In game 3 they set an incredible NBA playoff record for shooting 75 percent in the 1st half. But the incredible thing is they have beaten the Heat two times in a row on their home floor which has never been done in the big 3 era. Revenge is a popular word when it comes to sports because there are always rivals no matter what sport you play and the Spurs are definitely seeking some revenge on the Heat. It has been a combined team effort for the Spurs to be up 3-1 as Tony Parker and Tim Duncan are leading the way, both veterans, both know what it takes to win the NBA championship.
Now for the defending NBA champs, people might say that they are finished with their backs against the wall and the world rooting against them. If there is anything I learned about sports in my life, it’s that no defending champ will go down without a fight. LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh have never been down 3-1 in a series before and it’ll be very interesting to see how they come and respond in an elimination game on Sunday. If I had to pick any team out of any sport in the world to come back from a 3-1 deficit it would definitely be the Miami Heat. LeBron James will absolutely not go down that easily; he is the best player in the world for a reason. In order for them to do this I really believe they need to get back to the way they know how to play defense because in this series it just hasn’t been there. Now that’s not taking away anything from the dominate Spurs offense but the Heat certainly are better than what they been showing.
This could be the last year of the big 3 era as LeBron James contract is up after this season and could be the last time to watch the best team in my era compete. Of course there are talks of Carmelo Anthony joining the Heat and creating what is almost like the starting 5 of an All-Star team. As a fan I am rooting for LeBron and the Heat to pull it out and to win back to back to back championships just to prove to all the haters that they can do it and will go down as one of the greatest teams of all time. If you enjoy basketball then you love watching the Heat play. LeBron James will carry them to victory!

Tyler Clementi

...similar interests and values. One of the greatest characteristics searched for in others is genuine goodness. It is typical to want to be surrounded by good people. Are all people either good or evil? While everyone has good and evil intentions within themselves, whether the evil tendencies present outwardly is determined by the people that individuals are surrounded by. This is demonstrated by how the population behaves in discrimination towards minorities, with lack of authority, and with an imbalance of power in groups. One human tendency is to act out upon evil desires when inundated by minorities or people already existing to be bullied. This is seen in the case of a teenage girl named Phoebe Prince and a college-aged student named Tyler Clementi. Their tormentors have been accused of “bullying them to death”. An article states, “As the girl walked home, a car full of students crept close. One kid hurled a crumpled soda can out the window… the girl had gone home after the soda-can incident and killed herself… “mean girl” tormentors charged with felony crimes” (Source 3). Because Prince and Clementi were already bullied and Clementi was a gay male in college, the bullies deemed it acceptable to act out on their evil desires. Some may argue that, “Their suicides are evidence of deeper problems than bullying…Clementi’s bullies cruelly exploited that social prejudice, but they did not cause in” (Source 5) but this is easily denied. Many courts are trying to decipher whether...

He thought it was the worst movie made in 2009, and that the only thing that saved it was its great performances by Academy Award-winner Kathy Bates and Academy Award-nominee Alfre Woodard; “[a]nd that warm, gooey glow that seems to follow every Tyler Perry movie.” The Family That Preys is a movie for anyone who likes close families, friendship, drama, and a whole bunch of nonsense. This movie is about a Wealthy Socialite, Charlotte Cartwright (Bates), and her close friend, Alice Pratt (Woodard), a working class woman. Their lives are turned upside down as their adult children's extramarital affairs, unethical business practices and a dark paternity secret threaten to derail family fortunes and unravel the lives of all involved. In the review, John says, “Charlotte seems almost to suffer from a split personality disorder. When she’s with Alice she’s a freewheeling, kind, and generous woman. Whenever we see her without her friend, she’s a horrible rich bitch, ripped straight off the set of Dallas or Falcon Crest.” In the movie, Charlotte is never snobby or two faced. She puts on a hard exterior while working because she is fighting an endless battle with her son, William. He believes she has lost her spunk and is trying to excommunicate...

Tyler Perry has directed and starred in his own movies ranging from romance to comedy. He comes from every aspect, he isn’t afraid to do what other directors are afraid, deep heart felt movies about love and how forgiveness can change a lot. From he started in 1992 when he saved us his little twelve thousand dollars only thirty people came out to his show, but look what determination and focus can bring you. He is a mutli-millionaire now. So far he has written, directed and starred in eleven of his movies and counting, I never get tired of this movies they bring such a change each and every time. ...Why did I get Married, the Tyler Perry film starring Tasha Smith, Janet Jackson, Sharon Leal, Jill Scott, and Tyler Perry himself is the story about the struggle married couples to remain faithful to one another, while focusing on achieving their goals. Each couple participates in a Mountain retreat that takes place in Colorado Mountains in order to focus on the nature of their marriage, reflect on their love for one another. This provided a break from career, daily routine, to reflect on the state of their marriage, while resolving existing issues, dealing with conflict, while maintaining their love for each other. This movie is a contemporary view of African American lifestyles, culture, and life’s issues. Contemporary viewing in African American media is the direct result of how African Americans have worked hard, to overcome past struggles thus changing culture, ideals, beliefs, creating a new way for future generations. This movie can be seen from a variety of areas, such as education level and socioeconomic class conflict. This can also be seen from the gender perspective, as a rival between female behaviour in a relationship, and male behaviour in a relationship. Class, and education can be further analyzed into the lifestyle that is influenced by it, creating new concerns; hence the marriage problems that differ within education and economic class levels. While numerous other theories; sociological, semiotics, Marxist and others can be employed to analyze this film; I...

...whether it is a comedy, actions, or documentary. Yet, our society gets influence by them in a type of way. Some movies brought a life lesson, and others provide a negative image about something. All movies or shows have a type of message behind it, but people never spends their time to analyze or think about it. Regardless of the type of movies, they always impact or influence someone’s life, or they learn from it. Beyond the scene and acting, there is a scene that contains messages that might caught one attention and make them stare and think for a little while. Those types of movies sometime bring joy and sometimes they bring tears. In the movie “the diary of a mad black woman “by Tyler Perry gives a lot of good examples also a life lesson. Analysis

...Tester Brilliant, brutal, overwhelming, a con job, those are all words that are being used to describe the new film Precious, which is based on the novel Push by Sapphire. It tells the story of a 16-year-old black girl living in Harlem in the Reagan years, whose impassive face and huge girth are no mask for the pain she is carrying - the pain of unrelenting physical and sexual abuse at the hands of both parents. But somehow she finds a way to survive. The film produced by entertainment superstars Oprah and Tyler Perry and produced and directed by Lee Daniels, who also produced such provocative films as Monsters Ball and The Woodsman, has already scooped up awards at various film festivals and been touted as Oscar material. But it has also opened up some difficult conversations about race and poverty, about sexual abuse, and about skin color, even about how black filmmakers portray dark-skinned people. In a few minutes, we'll talk about just how real Precious is. How real her story is. We'll talk to a human rights activist who advocates for incarcerated, women many of whom have been victims of exactly the kind of abuse depicted in the film. But first, we're going to talk about some of the cultural conversations being sparked by Precious. The online magazine the Root has published a number of pieces related to the film and two of the writers are with us now. Teresa Wiltz is the Roots' senior culture writer and she's also serving as interim managing editor. She's...

My Life Without the Extras

...Eng. 111 Thematic Movie Review My Life Without The Extras My life without the extras is depicted very eloquently in one of my favorite movies in the past year, The Single Moms Club. The Single Moms Club is a 2014 American comedy-drama film produced, written, and directed by Tyler Perry. Released in theatres on May 9, 2014 and to DVD on July 22, 2014, The Single Moms Club is an adequate depiction of the struggles in the life of these single mothers. The lead actresses of this movie are Jan (Wendi McLendon-Covey), May (Nia Long), Esperanza (Zulay Henao), Hillary (Amy Smart), and Lytia (Cocoa Brown). In The Single moms club, schoolyard child’s play at an Atlanta prep school brings a diverse group of women to the principal's office. Their misfits were caught smoking and tagging at school, so these culture clashed women are tasked with organizing a dance and fundraiser as the “parental punishment.” The plot and the characters make The Single Moms Club the wonderful and home hitting movie that I will watch time and time again. The moms are a diverse bunch. Jan is a stern, all-business type trying to make partner where she works but not without the snotty attitude of her little trouble-making daughter. In one of the film's many coincidences, she recently rejected a story idea from May for being urban. May is a journalist and aspiring author, trying to guide her troubled son Rick through the rough waters of having a father that does what he wants but at the expense of...

Two Great Comedians

...Two Great Comedians Tyler Perry and Steve Harvey are two iconic comedians that have soared to great heights in the world of comedy. They are comedians, singers, authors and have appeared on stage and television. These two men have one thing in common; they love to make people laugh. Both of these comedians have struggled in order to find their true calling in life. Steve Harvey lost all his money because of past mistakes and slept in his car for two years. The same can be said for Tyler Perry who took all his money and made a bad investment which left him penniless and he also had to sleep in his car. These two men had the courage to bounce back after living homeless, sleeping in their cars, and have now become world- renowned icons in the comedy world. Tyler Perry is a better comedian than Steve Harvey because Tyler Perry does not use profanity and his style of comedy is acceptable to all ages. During a performance on television Steve Harvey was preparing to come onto the stage. The room was dark, full of cigarette smoke, people drinking, looking around at each other. Suddenly a light shined on the stage. Displayed was a big flashy sign with his signature in bright colors. The master of ceremonies ran out on the stage and yells “Ladies and gentlemen, put ya hands together and show ya love for Steveeeeee Harvaaaaaaay”. Harvey walked out on the stage and immediately began to start talking about some” crazy fool” who cut him off on the freeway, calling him names, and talking...

What I Have Become

...| What I Have Become | Sandtron Leon Harrell | | | | Approaching the end of my Fall Semester of 2011 I had accomplished one of the greatest things in my life. I had become a member Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated. All was well and I felt as though there was not too much else for me to conquer. Then as the semester drew to a close being advised and selecting classes for the Spring Semester began to be advertised all over myUWG. So to rid myself of all the irksome alerts of West Georgia I went and got advised. While selecting my classes my advisor brought up Personal Relationships. When I first heard it the first two things I thought were “my girlfriend took that class” and “she said it was easy.” So with me being the collegiate student I am I decided I would take it. I figured why not I’m in a personal relationship I should be able to relate. The first day of class was definitely not what I expected. I did not know that my teacher would look, think and talk like a student! From then on I knew that this was class was going to have the biggest impact on me, the way I thought, the way I talked, the way I evaluated relationships and how I looked at my life’s up and downs all together we’re going to change in due time. From the time I got advised up to the first day of class I honestly thought that this was just going to be another class. When in reality it wasn’t just another class, it was going to be THE class. From January 10, 2012 and so on, my life would...
