Typical Minimum Wage Workers

I completely agree that not all minimum wage workers come from a poor house hold. In a article called "Typical Minimum-Wage Earners Aren't Poor, But They're Not Quite Middle Class" it says, "Close to half a million minimum-wage earners are in households with six-figure incomes, and a million more are in those that earn at least $60,000" (Casselman pg. 3). Casselman then goes on to say that "about 1.6 million people, or about half of all minimum-wage workers" (Cassleman pg. 2) can support there-self. So even with minimum wage being so low as some might say there are people in this world who are making it work. They are budgeting and saving what they can. Sherk even got an expert opinion form Ohio University Economist it says, "the overall Poverty

Should We Raise Minimum Wage Reduce Poverty?

...Some people may think raising the minimum wage will reduce poverty, but guess what it really doesn’t to a point. Let me break it down for you, you see raising the minimum wage will help out, but what else is changing when you raise the minimum wage? Well when you raise the minimum wage something else changes with it. It actually redistributes income among poor families, it puts others out of work, and it doesn’t put low-wage workers out of work. Raising the minimum wage will not reduce poverty. Admittedly, Raising minimum wage increases in tax income, help bigger families, and increase in annual earnings . “In 1998, a typical family of four with a full-time, minimum -wage worker had income above the poverty line when food stamps and EITC benefits were considered” ( Furman, and Parrot). Food stamps and EITC benefits are considered for a big family of four because it will become hard for them to live with because you have to buy food, pay bills, mortgage/rent (etc). Raising the minimum wage could help out a little, but not a lot. You see raising the minimum wage will only help get big families with food and more. However once you raise the minimum wage other things would have to either change or something would have to go. other people’s pay may go up or you would have to try to recalculate how everyone’s pay is being...

Minimum Wage Research Paper

...Minimum wage is the lowest amount of money that a person can be legally paid. As of January 1st, Georgia’s minimum wage was $5.15 an hour (National Conference of State Legislature). The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, but the price remains $5.15 in Georgia for the people who are exempt from the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (Johnson). Minimum wage should never be as low as it is now. The minimum wage should be increased because of the increase in the cost of living, it would spur job growth, and it would reduce inequality. Minimum wage is supposed to cover the cost of living in today’s society. As of today, the minimum wage is not enough to cover housing. When the price for these items rose, the minimum wage should have risen as...

The Case on Wal-Mart

...Rights In 1998, Barbara Ehrenreich, a social critic and journalist, embarked on a ground-breaking experiment. To understand the typical low-wage worker, she left her comfortable life and took on various jobs and attempted to survive on minimum wage in three different places in the nation. One of her stops was Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she was employed by Wal-Mart, America’s largest employer employs with approximately 1.3 million workers in this country alone. Founded in 1962, Wal-Mart was Sam Walton's vision of great customer service and was meant to be a way to lower the cost of living in America. However, it seems that the corporation chooses to forgo certain issues such as fair wages and decent healthcare for its employees, so that they may afford their low, low prices. In her New York Time’s Bestseller, Nickel and Dimed, Ehrenreich states that “[u]nderneath those vests […] there are real-life charity cases, maybe even shelter dwellers” (175). Ehrenreich’s claim that Wal-Mart employees are dreadfully paid and mistreated are still accurate today, seven years later, as is evident by the statements of current statistics and recent articles that Wal-Mart continues to pay their employees minimum wage while the company’s CEO has a multimillion dollar salary, fails to provide decent health benefits to half of their employees causing these workers to rely on the government, and is strongly anti-union so that the company can continue to exploit their employees. In fact, she states...

Minimum Wage the Questionable Policy

...the feeling of a minimum waged worker. Like all of those workers, I feel exhausted after finishing my job. Everyday, I wait with impatience to hear my supervisor say “That is it, turn off the belt.” After put off my safety gloves and sweep my sweat, I can only think to return to my room and sleep. I lost most of my time and energy just for a few dollars. There are a lot of people that work harder and earn less than me. The poor, especially less-skilled workers, has access only to “bad jobs at bad wages” (Blank 64). Those workers always face bad situation. They are poor. They are struggling to sustain the life of their families. On the contrary, the owners of the company where they work have a high standard of living. Bad wage is advantageous for the group of people known as traditional elites who own labor-intensive firms because it lowers production cost, thus increase the competitiveness of the product. For that reason, it is natural for the traditional elites to keep wage as low as possible. This action creates what Karl Marx wrote in The Communist Manifesto as ”naked, shameless, direct, brutal exploitation” (82). The minimum wage seems to be an appealing solution against these abusive exploitations. Applying a minimum wage law, government can force a wealth distribution among the owners and their lowest level workers. On Saturday, June 25, 1938, The U.S. Congress first instituted a minimum wage with the Fair Labor Standard Act. The minimum wage...

Nike Hitting the Wall

...a convincing response? There is no denying of the fact that Jeff Ballinger has a convincing argument about Nike. As he was assigned to run AAFLI office in Indonesia, he was very much inclined to investigate the labor practices and minimum wage compliance by overseas American companies. Moreover, Nike was in news at that time regarding its critical labor practices, so it became the only prominent target. Ballinger, during the course of his studies about the company and research about the labor practice, revealed that Nike encouraged its contractors to hit some unrealistic production quotas by mistreating the labors. It was also revealed that there were heavy traces of corruption which was degrading the law practices and there were hardly any prosecutions made. According to him, Indonesian workers were paid so low that it hardly fulfilled their basic necessities. The comparison between the pay stub of Indonesian factory and Michael Jordan endorsement contract was even harder hitting based on his technical calculations. According to his report, an average Indonesian worker would take 44,492 years to match the money made by Michael Jordan's one endorsement contract. Followed by the extreme media coverage on this, CBS found that Indonesian workers were only paid 19 cents an hour. Despite hiring Ernst & Young to carry on the audits in the factories, Nike could not resist the criticism coming their way. Initially Nike's response to all this was very unstable. The company took no...

Federal Minimum Wage

...Federal Minimum Wage Proposal Research Essay MDH-ECO210 President Obama has proposed to increase the Federal Minimum Wage to $10.10 as well as increase the Earned Income Tax Credit among other items associated with this. There are those who oppose the increase to Federal Minimum Wage as well as those who support this proposal. What we have to question when looking at this increase is whether or not it will actually help the economy or if it will simply raise costs of everything we buy on a daily basis. It is necessary that “businesses need to have money available to pay for labor, materials, power, and other inputs” (McConnell, Brue, Flynn, 315). It is debated if raising minimum wage will stifle these businesses, by increasing their pay rate for labor. There are many factors to consider when looking at this proposal that has a multitude of pros and cons. If this constant debate continues as it has in the previous instances then the typical result will be that most Republicans will oppose the proposal while the majority of Democrats will be in favor of passing the bill. President Obama is quoted as saying in his State of the Union address that “in the wealthiest nation on Earth, no one who works full time should have to live in poverty” (Hassett, Strain, 2013). The case that is made against raising the minimum wage is very simple; by raising the minimum wage it makes it more expensive for businesses to hire employees. Those who retain their jobs will make more money;...

Wages Determination

...Olivia Thomas Economics 7/1/2016 Wage Determination in Professional Sports We work day in and day out for the same dollar every day. Shouldn’t the wages change when the economy changes? The question maybe what is wage determination? The answer is the listing of wage rates and fringe benefit rates for each classification of laborers and mechanics which the Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor had determined to be prevailing in a given area for a particular type of construction. To further understand how wage determination works we have to know how it’s rated. A classical economists argue that wages—the price of labor—are determined (like all prices) by supply and demand. They call this the market theory of wage determination. When workers sell their labor, the price they can charge is influenced by several factors on the supply side and several factors on the demand side. The wages rate shouldn’t be a set price or amount. Whatever the current economic status is should determine how the rate of wages should be. Most wages and rates are based on earnings. Your weekly or bi-weekly earnings set the rate of wages. Earnings are equal to wage rate multiplied by number of hours worked, so an employee learns that the minimum wage of $7.25 and the typical work week of 40 hours will equal to $290 per week and only $15,080 a year. Wages differ from nations, regions, occupations, and individuals. Generally wages will be higher where the demand for...

However, these young women have underestimated the hardships of living in the city such as Beijing. There are many disadvantages according to the article that these young women encountered while migrated to Beijing such as labor exploitation from a local employer( pay less than the standard wage, work in a sweat shop and long hour), gender discrimination, and sexual violence. Rural women are the target of the labor exploitation because they are lack of capital resources to be independent on their own, lack of education, and the traditional patriarchal society. Some other major disadvantages that these rural women are facing are the risk of losing their jobs anytime after they pass twenty five year old and being deported by local authority( due to the big volume of migrant workers in the city and a the unwillingness of a local owner to employ an employer who passes twenty five). There is no doubt that rural Chinese Women have more freedom in making their own decisions compared to the past, but the question is at what cost does this come? It is hard to believe that women nowadays have given the full legal protections but still have to pay a high price to prove their abilities. Their contributions are being...

Frenc Colonial Rule in Morrocco

...French rule in Morocco began during the end of the 19th century. In 1904 the French government was trying to establish a protectorate over Morocco, which would make Morocco a French colony. Although this would not happen but for another 8 years. France’s influence could still be felt in the African country. The French conquest of Morocco took place in 1911 in the aftermath of the Agadir Crisis, when Moroccan forces besieged the French-occupied city of Fez. Approximately one month later, French forces brought the siege to an end. On 30 March 1912, Sultan Abdelhafid signed the Treaty of Fez, formally ceding Moroccan sovereignty to France, which established a protectorate. On 17 April 1912, Moroccan infantrymen mutinied in the French garrison in Fez. The Moroccans were unable to take the city and were defeated by a French relief force. In late May 1912, Moroccan forces unsuccessfully attacked the enhanced French garrison at Fez. The last aftermath of the conquest of Morocco occurred in September 1912 when French colonial forces under Colonel Mangin defeated Moroccan resistance at the Battle of Sidi Bou Othman. On March 30, 1912, France officially established a protectorate over Morocco with the Treaty of Fez, which ended what remained of the country's independence. From a strictly legal point of view, the treaty did not deprive Morocco of its status as a sovereign state. The Sultan reigned but did not rule. Sultan Abdelhafidabdicated in favor of his brother Yusef after signing...

Politicians debate but a general consensus by renowned economists are clear: Increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10 would be beneficial to the economy, especially in the lower and middle classes. The individuals making wage are not overwhelmingly teenagers. A majority of the people making under $10.10 are women, average aged 35 and support more than one person (“Minimum Wage, Who Makes It?”). Because of these slanted figures compared to non-minimum wage jobs, increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10 has the capability of bringing up the salary of 28 million Americans,...

Burger Bots

...Burger Bots: Burger Making Machines That Will Revolutionize the Fast Food Industry Discussing the loss of human jobs to machines, Andrew McAfee, co-author of the book Race against the Machine, says “we ain’t seen nothing yet.” In the United States, the fast food industry has one of the highest employee turnover rates at 50 percent, costing the industry about $3.4 billion in recruiting and training. Many chains are already looking for ingenious ways to take humans out of the picture, threatening workers in an industry that employs 2.4 million wait staffers, nearly 3 million cooks and food preparers and many of the United States’ 3.3 million cashiers. Automation in the fast food industry has already started. In Europe, McDonald’s “hired” 7,000 touch-screen kiosks to handle cashiering duties, taking orders and handling payments. The use of touch screens at drive-thrus will also soon be available. While the full automation of fast-food cashiers isn’t here just yet, researchers and those in the business say it’s only a matter of time before ordering and payment become primarily self-service. In this essay I would like to discuss another type of automation, a technology which I believe will further revolutionize and potentially result in a significant number of jobs lost in the fast food industry, the burger making robot or burger bot. The burger bot doesn’t just flip the beef patties; it actually makes the burgers from start to finish. It may sound ludicrous at first, but...
