...“Pink Houses” and the American Dream What is the American Dream? Is the American Dream to go from having nothing to building an empire? Could the American Dream be to live a simple life? To some people the American Dream could be to simply live in a country where they have freedoms unlike those in many other countries. John Mellencamp’s “Pink Houses” is his interpretation of the American Dream. The vast majority of people have different interpretations of the American Dream. Mellencamp’s song “Pink Houses,” includes lyrics such as “Cause they told me when I was younger said boy, you’re gonna be president.” ("JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP LYRICS") This verse represents an American parent expressing a high expectation for their son to achieve in life. Some people think that to achieve the American Dream, one must reach for the stars; such as, striking it rich or owning a multi-billion dollar corporation. Other people however, think in a more modest way such as in the verse “There’s a black man with a black cat livin’ in a black neighborhood, he’s got an interstate runnin’ through his front yard you know he thinks he’s got it so good.” ("JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP LYRICS") This lyric references the mindset that as long as people are living free and happy, it does not matter how much they have but rather what they have. History shows that the American Dream originally held different meanings than it does today. Yesterday the American Dream meant that by living in America, a man could...

...A Rumor of War by Philip Caputo, a man's first-hand experiences during the Vietnam War. Philip Caputo is a Lieutenant during the Vietnam War and illustrates the harsh reality of what war really is. Caputo's in-depth details of his experience during the war are enough to make one cringe, and the eventual mental despair often experienced by soldiers (including Caputo) really makes you feel for participants taking part in this dreadful war atmosphere. Giving way to the parties and the common fun associated with college kids, Caputo failed out of college and realized what he really wanted to be was a Marine. He joined the Marines and went through a lot of officer training until he eventually reached what would be known as his final rank of Lieutenant. Introduced to the Vietnam War in 1965 as a Platoon leader, Caputo walked into the war a little scared but with a lot of determination. I found Caputo’s words to paint a very explicit picture. His style of writing revealed the emotions he must have felt while going through such a life changing experience. I liked the way he put all things, emotions, reflections and actions, into words. He explained every man in detail, and made you feel as if you knew them too. The way he felt sorry for the men who died was touching. Also, the way he explained his annoyance when he raided his first village, the way the women looked who had no feeling in her face. Caputo really drew you into his words. It made me think about the way men and women...

...James C Vincent II Mr. Purkiss English Comp II 6 March 2012 Dulce et Decorum Est is a war poem written by Wilfred Owen. Dulce et Decorum Est means it is sweet and right. Dulce et Decorum Est addressed the issue of how war really is. The poem is known for its horrifying imagery. The song that is similar to this poem is an anti-war song called “War” performed by Edwin Starr. In the 1980s this song explained how some people of the United States felt about the War in Vietnam. The song is now known for the movie Rush Hour. Both of the poem and song address an important issue that many people did not pay attention to. Dulce et Decorum est and the song “War” by Edwin Starr are similar by addressing the stress of the War. The similar elements that they share are the tone, situation and metaphors. Dulce et Decorum Est and the song “War” both have a horrific tone. The tone is used to express a lot of the horrifying situations. In dulce et decorum Est, the line “In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, and drowning” (p4 line2) is explaining what happened after the mustard gas was used in the combat zone. He explains how the person he witnesses is suffering from the gas attack. In the song “War” the tone is used to express his feelings on how the war has affected other people. In the line”War means tears to thousands of mother’s eyes when their sons go to fight and lose their lives” (p4 line1) The Vietnam war deployed many solders mostly in...

...EXECUTIVE SUMMARY There is an increasing desire for the implementation of condition based maintenance programs to replace the traditional hour based maintenance on Military rotor wing aircraft. There are several advantages and disadvantages to this type of maintenance. The purpose of this paper is to discuss both and the affect that they play in regards to the organizational behavior of a business. There are distinct advantages in regards to cost when we talk about condition based maintenance. Replacing a part only when it is likely to fail saves the cost of replacement at a possible earlier time like in a phase based program, or catching a part that might have failed prior to the required hour inspection or replacement time. But this new technology comes with a cost. A cost, not only monetary, but also within the organizational behavior of a corporation or organization such as the military. When we talk about Managing change and stress, we have to talk about the external forces of change effecting these technological advancements. The technology of condition based maintenance is justified through the savings it generates through the maintenance program but what cost will it have on the people working on these aircraft? Will there be a reduction in jobs? This concern can start trouble, rumors, and decreased production from employees that normally work hard. What effect will it have on the organizational design? Will there be an increase or decrease in managerial roles? Will there...

...Kava is an island in the South Pacific. Even though the island is barraged by obstacles and harsh conditions, the community remains resilient. Sikorsky Aircraft wants to build a production facility on Kava with the goal of not only helping stakeholders and the organization, but also to provide aid to the suffering community. Placing a new facility for production in Kava gives the company the opportunity to reduce production costs and to improve the quality of life of the local residents, which will be done through profit allocation. To promote new businesses in the economy, the government of Kava puts forth incentives like tax breaks and licensing at low costs. Thus, now is the perfect time to bring this plan to fruition. Sikorsky Aircraft already is a player in the global market, and I assert that a Kav’ian subsidiary would be a smart investment. In recent years, Kava has experienced multiple natural disasters. As a result, the community has been ravaged and many families are now experiencing poverty. Sikorsky’s production facility there would give job opportunities to the local people: they could work in the low-level line production jobs that would help the production of the standard H-60 Black Hawk airframe. Part of the profits that would be earned thanks to the cut in labor costs would be dedicated to a revival for the local community. Sikorsky plans to make contributions to community centers, improved housing, disaster relief, activities, and the educational system. ...

...Argument Analysis Clint Chapman Ivy Tech University ENGL 112 Exposition and Persuasion Tolulope Idowu 2/13/2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yzeCsv-qrM Abstract I’m going to analyze an advertisement for the wildly successful video game, Call of Duty: Black Ops. We will look at the audience the video is intending to reach, and the message it is trying to get across. Its about a minute long and features a few celebrities, but mostly just normal people in a war time setting. It looks to be well produced, and it was generally well received by anyone who viewed it. Youtube, black ops, call of duty, advertisement, analysis Call of Duty Analysis In November of 2010 the latest installment of the wildly successful video game franchise, Call of Duty was released. It was known as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and is first person shooter set in the height of the cold war era. There was an intense media and advertising blitz, mostly online and in print, but there was one notable commercial. As someone who has played all of these games, and usually at the top of the leaderboard when I do play, I was already excited before I saw the commercial. The commercial is trying to appeal to a wide range of people, not just the typical 15-24 year old male that this game appeals too. Those people already know about the game, have more than likely already pre-ordered it, and will be waiting at midnight to pick it up. This commercial is obviously not for them. It is, however...

...battlefield by joining the fight as combat aviators, crew chiefs, and helicopter mechanics, showcasing their skills and leadership abilities. Lt. Col. Gail E. Atkins, commander, 122nd Aviation Support Battalion, 82nd CAB, is no stranger to the changing role of women in combat aviation. The Westchester, Pa., native has served for almost 18 years as a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter pilot. “We are seeing an evolution with regard to women in combat roles, in how our skills have evolved and how we are exploiting those skills,” Atkins said. “In aviation, we went through this back in 93’, when the military opened up attack aviation to women, so we are 15 years ahead of the curve in aviation compared to where our other branches are.” Throughout her career, Atkins has seen an increase in number of women who serve alongside her. “I have an all female staff right now and it’s just the way it has worked out. But I think it is indicative of the number of women who are joining the service,” Atkins said. Other women have seen changes in their career fields since joining the Army, including Chief Warrant Officer 2 Laura G. Dye a UH-60M Black Hawk pilot, 2nd Aviation Assault Battalion, 82nd CAB. She began her career eight years ago as an enlisted field artillery soldier. “I always knew I wanted to join the Army but I never had aspirations to be a pilot or work in aviation,” Dye said. “So, when I...
