Reading is one of the most important components in leading a successful life. If you want to do anything in life you will need to know how to read. In The Life Story and Real Adventures of the Poor Man of Toggenburg, Ulrich Bräker discovers reading and writing on his own. Ulrich Bräker faced many hardships throughout his early life that shaped who he was as an adult. Going through what Ulrich Bräker went through as a child while having an enormous amount of passion and determination to gain knowledge through reading and writing is what makes Ulrich Bräker such an outstanding man. Ulrich Bräker says, “Reading and writing have grown more than ever to be a vital necessity to me, even though I may only scribble the most trivial things in my journal, or con old calendars!” (Bräker, 212-213). Reading and writing became Ulrich Bräker’s life. It became everything to him. Ulrich Bräker is aware of his difficulties and is grateful for his life and his successes. He writes about how his life has been difficult, but he always looks at the bright side of things. He thanks God for all the good he has brought to the earth. Ulrich Bräker says, “… And to read, as it were, into the hearts of the best and wisest men of all time- what a bliss, what a blessing, what indemnification for so many hundreds of bitter pills, which have to be swallowed down before and after!” (Bräker, 213).
